Okay, so a year and a half after the previous post. But hey, I’m new the BM hobby and wanted to give my two cents 🙂

I’ve recently found two benchmark disks that were dated 1930. Both of them were in railroad bridge footings in Oshkosh.

CONGRATS!!! And here’s to many more recoveries!!

There’s an excellent tutorial that covers all the markings and such on the GC.com forums. Don’t know how to link, otherwise, I’d link it here.

Good diagram for many to know and recognize as most tend to think #2 and #3 are the same thing as #1 and log it all as such. They are all closely related, but are not the same thing and its vital to know the difference.

Still hoping to find a #6 and #10 yet.

It’s very accurate. Holoscene updates it every month and posts the link on the GC.com benchmark forum.

I would like to see an email notification sent to nominees stating their cache was nominated. Our son had a cache nominated for COTM and we never knew about it until much much later.

Oh, parking. I’m not sure. We drove in from Baltimore and had a place to park everytime thanks to family connections. I do know we did lots of walking. I’m not sure for all parts of DC, but my family and I felt pretty safe in the vicinity of the Mall late at night.

in reply to: Mmmm virtuals #1931170

Considering that most all of touristy DC area is a national park or national monument – physical caches are not allowed. What’s nice is that most of the virtuals are near, at, or on the way as you walk around the Mall. They are pretty much set up so you can sight see and geocache at the same time. We got quite a few of them but not all as we were interested in grabbing some of the benchmarks in the area as well.

Plan for tired feet if you choose to walk the area. 🙂 Have fun and let me know if the opened up the grass area in the mall yet.

    Did this the manual way…

    0- 1 mi 20 caches (3 owned) 0 to find
    1.1 – 5 mi 300 caches (7 owned) 45 to find (7 puzzles, 1 disabled)
    5.1 – 10 mi 153 caches (5 owned) 37 to find (13 puzzles, 0 disabled)
    10.1 – 20 miles 280 caches (4 owned) 182 to find (25 puzzles)
    20.1 – 30 mi 966 caches (0 owned) 379 to find (118 puzzles, 13 disabled, 1 event)

21 caches have the “NEW” icon.

Thanks Peach, we would also take On the Brink and Ceriline Creek if nobody has claimed them yet. Just send us the adoption requests and we will take care of it.

Peach, I’ll take you Stadium View and Frozen Tundra caches. They’re close enough to mine that maintainance isn’t an issue.

I actually think most of the ones around here are the second type. For instance: PN0697

To me it sounds like the second one. Am I wrong?

Yeah, it definitely sounds like the second. In this case the GC.com page has the info you need, but its always best to use the original datasheet. Sometimes they provide a lot more info. It would be interesting to see if the markings are still on the curb.

Remember, any BMs on private property – you must secure permission first! I find that’s half the fun!

Let me know how it goes. Good Luck!!
