We ran into a bear while benchmarking up in Vilas county. We were searching for a benchmark when we heard a loud crashing sound through the woods behind us. We looked up to spot a big black blob we realized was a bear. We made some noise and the bear took off in the direction it came from. We were so on edge, we packed up our stuff and headed back to the car .4 miles away rather than stay and find the last mark we were looking for.

We saw this movie as a family and it was great! Our nine year old son loved it! We recently had a trip to Washington DC and so he knew many of the buildings and landmarks very well. He was disappointed that more of the White House wasn’t shown though-especially the kitchen. Anyways, it looks like a trip to Mount Rushmore is in our future and where ever else movie number 3 shows us……..

WHen did you go to DC? We were there this summer and looked at the declaration of independence. While we were there, some kid goes, I’m right where nick cage stood!

We were there in mid-September so it probably wasn’t Jacob. LOL I was surprised how much the city had changed since my pre 9-11 visits. Barricades and security more prominent and almost everywhere! Not like I remembered it.

In my pack, I carry the following items:

    batteries
    small first aid kit
    compass
    pen & pencil
    small notebook
    firetacks
    flint fire starter kit
    whistle
    emergency blanket
    poncho
    power bars
    trade items
    tick extractor (seasonal)
    100% Deet (seasonal)
    hand warmers (seasonal)
list of medications I’m allergic too
    my tetanus shot card
    my blood type card
fem hygeine (hey ya never know)

The pack is always in the car, but if I’m caching around a small city park for example or at a park and ride, the pack is left in the car. If it’s a longer hike, the pack goes with me.

While it amy seem silly to carry the flint, it actually came in handy last time we went to Rock Island. We forgot to pack matches, lighters etc, but I just so happened to have my caching bag on me and the flint was in it. Here I thought I would actually need it.

I carry all my electronics in my carry on. Although I have yet to actually use my GPSr while in flight.
Interesting about the TBs and getting checked. I just throw them in my suitcase. I don’t need any more hassle then what already takes place trying to go through airport security.

Although we did not participate in the geocaching, we were there camping at the same time as the event. While talking to the park Naturalist, Paul, he nothing but good things to say about geocachers. He mentioned in one of his talks how he encouraged people to go off trail and explore the entire island. He even said he was grateful that geocachers had uncovered a 100 year old oven used by coopers that had long been lost in the deep woods. Hope you guys have fun.

😆 As long as you are not exploring off the trails with some cachers….they take the long way round from the highest point to get back to camp. Something about not wanting to go down the way we came up. (although gravity would have worked with us, not against us). In any case, it was all worth it though, the company was fantastic and those discoveries buried deep in the woods under layers of forest floor, make it all worth it!!

I always like things that have a historical significance too them. Maybe a history tour of the West Bend area via caching?

All right! Just going form the top of my head…I think we are open that weekend. I’ll mark this event in big red letters on the calendar. We can’t afford to miss another one of these spectatular events. THANKS!!!

Ah, but if you pay attention, the moon as it’s just rising is an orangish color…thanks to the thicker layer of atmosphere near the horizon. As the moon appears to rise higher in the sky, the atmosheric scattering is less and we get the white moon everyone is familiar with.

This is also the case of a thin cresent moon that sets early in the evening. As it approaches the horizon, it will take on an orangish color….

So the orangish color is not something symbolic with a particular moon.

Here is a orange cresent moon taken in Baltimore mid-September…

This is the main reason I don’t bother caching in the Appleton area anymore. I want the enjoyment of finding a cache without having to waste time that I don’t even have to figure out some puzzle just to get coordinates. I have enough in real life to deal with that requires brain power. Caching shouldn’t be one of them.

By the sounds of things, it will be interesting to see if my ignore list will be get maxed out before I quit caching.

Hee Hee, I’m like Greyhounder, most of the numbers in my cell phone are geocachers.

I have used the phone a friend but only as a last ditch effort when trying to find a cache and I tend to be far from home looking for a cache. I don’t mind the practice. As far as I’m concerned, caches are meant to be found. I see the phone no different than sending an email or tackling a cache as part of a large group. It’s a tool, it can help, so why not.

Enjoy the Agawa Canyon train tour. We took the ride in August two years ago. There is one cache at the canyon where you stop and you should have plenty of time to find it and enjoy the scenery.
