in reply to: Ban on Cemetary caches #1759587

I am a BIG fan of cememtery caches! I enjoy the history, solitude and reflection they all offer.

I see geocaching in cemeteries no different than doing some aspects of genealogy in them. For genealogy, I’ve gone in search of gravemarkers, gotten or verified info from them, taken pixs of them for the geneology books and now even take GPS coordinates of the marker. I’ve never been questioned or looked at funny by anyone I’ve encountered.

Compare that to geocaching (at lest the way Marc54140 sets his up), I find a grave marker, grab the vital info off of them and go find a container off in a corner of the cemetery. Never been questioned or looked at funny by anyone either.

My 7 year old son was doing some cemetery caches with me. He can tell which grave markers are those of soldiers and which war they served by identifying the symbol/shape of the metal holders for the American flags. That’s not something you learn from a book – that’s field experience!

I hope the cemetery caches stay. I find them to be some of the neatest caches out there.

in reply to: How Will Rising Gas Prices… #1759100

I like caching and gas prices won’t slow me down or my distance to drive to get there. It’s finding time to go that’s the problem…….

Well, I have finally figured out how to use the PocketPC with GSAK so I can certainly give a hand covering this aspect if you guys would like some help. I don’t know if the way I am doing it is the most efficient, but I have GSAK web pages in my PocketPC so……..

in reply to: Want to go paperless (what do i need???) #1759769

We are just getting into the whole paperless thing as well. Our first successful attempt was this past week while on vacation in the U.P. We had a double barrel assult between our laptop and a Pocket PC.

On the laptop we have installed GSAK and Garmin MapSource. We also occasionally were using Microsoft Streets and Trips.

The first thing you need to do is download a pocket query from geocaching.com. Open it up into GSAK This is the key ingredient that makes everything else work.

With GSAK, we were able to export to the mapping software. This saved AstroKat several hours of marking up county maps and made navagating to the caches much easier.

GSAK creates an html based page that looks very much like the geocaching.com cache pages. The nice thing is that you can use it offline in conjunction with the GSAK database feature or export it to your Pocket PC and carry it with you while caching.

Of course you don’t need a laptop. You can load GSAK onto your regular computer and then export the data to the Pocket PC or Palm Pilot.

Hope the info helps. Feel free to email us if you have any other questions.

I think it took us 5 trips there before we were successful in finding it. A the memories… Mark-I got your extra clue.

Our Solar System Series has logs at most every stage. We decided to do it this way as we knew the caches would be a little more challenging so we thought it would be nice to reward the cacher for the extra efforts involved with the series.

I agree that it is totally up to you the cache owner which way you would like people to do it. Bottom line is don’t give in to the pressure if you don’t feel it is the right thing to do.

    Some good comments indeed.

I think there does need to be some leeway and action should be taken on a case by case basis. The example that Honeybunnies used on the Sub Series is a good one. Also being a cache owner myself I recently had a foot injury that kept me out of commission for a month and a half. There are certainly circumstances where 90 days may not be enough time to get the problem corrected.

There are a lot of new cachers in our area and it would be nice to see some of them plant some caches. I can also understand where it would be a good thing to archive some of these so new ones can be planted.

I can also understand Grousetales point that the approvers really do not have extra time to be policing these issues and I do think that we the cachers should be the ones contacting owners. I would also add that if we contact someone about their cache, we should also be willing to offer assistance fixing it if needed.

This is off topic but how many approvers are there? Also, if the approvers are having trouble keeping up with getting caches approved in a timely manner, why can’t you add another approver or two? I MAY be willing to help with that if I knew what was all involved.

OMG! Marc actually signed a log book himself??????

Congratulations on your big milestone! Here’s too many more dirt raods that lead right to the cache….

Gosh, could you tell I am a city slicker? That was some adventure yesterday. The dirt roads, the gravel roads (which actually ride nicer than alot of paved roads) and the old logging roads…all in a Grand Am to boot.

Then there’s the car wash while driving on the dirt road. All provided by the farmer watering his field, or should I say, dirt road??? That was fun!!

in reply to: The beast’s predictions for 2005 #1760330

As predicted earlier in the year, we have had to get the new tires. Could a new cachemobile be very far off? Time will tell. I have my eye on a Toyota Prius which would triple my current gas mileage.

Interesting topic indeed. My opinion is that since there is no rule currently in place at Geocaching.com that says you cannot log multiple finds, why should the WGA make up a rule?

It seems the best idea would be to change the “Attend” to read “Event Hides Found”. We all agree that logging “Attended” is a silly way to do it. Why can’t they make this modification?

I really don’t care what people in other states think about the way we log our finds. The first 5 words in the Beasts predictions thread hit the nail on the head “It’s all about the numbers”. People in other states are jealous that so many people in Wisconsin are putting out the numbers we are. Apparently we just have nothing better to do around here

I say leave the regulation out of it and let people log as they see fit. If Jeremy wanted to have a rule stating no multiple logs, then there would be one and we would be abiding by it.

Since this rule would only apply to WGA sponsored events it really won’t cut down on what people in other states see as the problem anyway. In fact, it may compound it even more. They will start asking why people can only log one find at an “official” event but can go grab 30-40 the next weekend at a “non-official” one.

I have added my gas to the thread, who has the matches?
