We have a six year old that goes caching with us. We do alot of the same things as the previous post. We also have special items that can only be played with in the car on geocaching trips (coloring books, handheld games etc). To save money and complaints, pack their favorite snacks and drinks!
Stick to caches that have an actual container big enough to trade items. While we sign the log book, our six year old rummages through the container for his prize and he chooses what to leave for the next person.
Find an area that holds their interest. Our son loves dams. We spent a lot of time in the Appleton area and going over or near the river so he could see the dams. It tends to hold his interest a bit longer.
Allow the youngsters to actually find and retrieve the cache. There’s nothing better when your sitting in the car driving to the next cache and you hear out of the back seat “I found the cache and you didn’t”. Psychs them up to find the next one.
And of course, stop at McD’s or their favorite restaurant for a treat. We try to find one with a playland. Barring that, if we are in an area we’ve been to before and there is a favorite park, we make an effort to stop there so we all can play.
Our biggest benefit though is to find other families to go caching with. Kids love being with other kids and it makes the day a lot more fun. It doesn’t happen uch for us, but when it does our son will go out all day and not complain.
Hope this gives you some ideas! Good luck and have fun!
11/29/2004 at 3:12 am in reply to: ecorangers bust through 2000 like grandpa’s belt on turkey d #1756470A big congratulations and many hugs from AstroD-Team. Next time were together, we buy the rounds to celebrate!!! Well done guys.
AstroD-Team came about after finding our first cache. We didn’t realize we needed a name to sign the log and we didn’t want to use our real name. So we used “Astro” because we love astronomy, “D” because its the first initial of our last name and “Team” because AstroD alone sounded stupid. Team was added cause we couldn’t think of anything else at the time.
Hey, good choice of a weekend! We’ll be there! That happens to be our only free weekend in April!
I have been wrestling with my thoughts and feelings regarding this whole issue. So far, I have kept from voicing my two cents, but no more.
The discussion was on ethics and geocaching. Well I’m chiming in with my take on the ethics of this thread.
“One cornerstone of ethical behavior is not to give credence to accusations –even if the accuser includes himself in the indictment.
Even if you were completely sure that the accusations were correct, that wouldn’t justify publicizing them. Shaming people who misbehave is a last resort, not a first line of action.
The best policy should have been to discuss the matter directly with the person(s) you suspected. Mention what you have heard or witnessed, explain in a patient and non-threatening way why you think these acts are unethical and could result in possible community disgrace. Be prepared to listen with an open mind to any denials or explanations provided for their behavior”. (I add quotation marks only because I am paraphrasing another trustworthy source).
To publically humiliate someone(s) is one of the lowest blows a person can make. Yes, isn’t that what this all resolved into?
Where ever the wind may blow with this, there are hurt feelings on all sides, issues of trust, and proper judgements. There is a long road ahead……
Congrats Sam-N-B! It was a pleasure to get to tag up with you a couple of weeks ago and hit the trails together! Onward and upward to 300! AstroKat

AstroKat AstroD-TeamOk, the date for this event will be January 28-30, 2005.
I have talked to the camp and they are very excited to have our group up there. I have also received their blessings to place as many caches on camp property and the surrounding county lands as I want.
We are in the process of creating a cache page for this event. Please check it out for details!
