Take all your stuff in one trip?? We’ve been doing this for 4 or 5 years and we still haven’t gotten all our gear to the site in one trip! But there are plenty of hands and carts to help haul everyone’s stuff.

But you still only make one (round) trip between Washington and Rock Island, correct? That’s the part I’m most worried about.

What you mean by “trip” is the walk between the point the boat drops you off and the camp site, correct?
And there are carts– thats a good thing. What about carts for people to use to haul things from their vehicle to the boat?

Would this be a good place to bring a kayak to go paddling around the island?

Sorry, for not be clearer. It was late. Yes, only one trip between Washington and Rock (the ferry hauls a lot, just be there early with your gear!)

Carts are available as long as someone in your group brings one. Neither of the islands provide any. (We willl have ours – good for up to 1500 lbs at a time). As far a hauling from the vehicle to the boat – the parking lot is at the boat dock. So no long walks hauling stuff. That’s reserved for Rock Island. 🙂

I can’t comment on the water, I avoid it like the plague, but I know experienced kayakers do like to make laps around the island and out to surrounding ones. Just be sure you know the water and your skills!! I heard the water and currents are vastly different up there.

I logged that I will attend.
It will be my first geocaching event unless of course I attend another event between now and then. I’ve never even been to Door County before so I’m pretty excited about being able to use this opportunity to go.

I’d be bringing only myself, and of course whatever else I can drag or carry to the island, I assume.

I’ve never camped at a group site before so I’m a little unsure of the “accomidations”. In how close proximity will everyone be camping from each other?

One thing I’m worrying about, is how much do I need to bring.
Of course I plan on bringing my own tent and cooler for food & drinks, but should I worry about bringing along the other camping essentials such as a camp stove or might only a few people bring camp stoves to share?
I worry that if I have too much stuff I might not be able to carry it on to the island all in one trip.

As for accomodations, it depends on how many are staying at the group site. If could be tent upon tent or there could be a bit of space to spread out. FYI, the walknig trail does go right through this camp site, so don’t be freaked if oyu see people walking by. Group site 1 is the biggest site and closest to the dock. We also set up a large tarp near the fire in case of bad weather for people to prepare food without getting wet (or sunburned). So tents will most likely be put around the perimeter of the camp site.

As far as equipment, most people bring all their own. I know we use our jetboil and the campfire for most of our cooking. And what one forgets, someone usually has, to help out. Independence is the best way to plan unless you make arangements with other campers beforehand to split/share stuff.

Take all your stuff in one trip?? We’ve been doing this for 4 or 5 years and we still haven’t gotten all our gear to the site in one trip! But there are plenty of hands and carts to help haul everyone’s stuff.

Just keep in mind this is camping at its most primitive and everything you may need, needs to be brought to the island. There are no stores or trading posts here. But that’s what makes it fun!

Time Warner cable is the worst! No wonder their prices are so high. They have to recoup the costs for all the junk mail they send.

in reply to: Tours – what exactly are they? #1926227

    Seldom,

Thank you for your reply. It makes things a bit clearer and put things in perspective for me. Lately I feel if I’ve gone caching with my friends or even my family (not even in the Fox Valley or specifically for puzzles), I’ve been targeted as a “tour” groupee). And it has soured me to the WGA, all it’s members, and geocaching as a whole.

I know when I go group cache (it IS fun), my idea is to go to an area that most of us have not done, and make a clear route to caches to reduce driving time and backtracking to find as many caches that none of us have found in the area as possible. Caches up for grabs are all types – trads, multis, off-sets, puzzles in the field etc. From my understanding then – that seems to be OK and is not considered a tour.

I know next week, I will be taking my son to find caches we’ve found as family years ago so he can sign his own caching name in the book and properly log it. As well as finding caches neither of us have found either. Now I’m not sure if that would be a tour as he was around the first time we found them as a family (but didn’t have his own caching name), and I don’t lead him to the cache (He does pretty well with the GPSR on his own). Will there be puzzles on the list – yes. But only ones that neither of us have found and I slaved over solving on my own.

In either case, I think for the first time I have a better idea of where the issues are and what they are. I still intend to cache with friends and in groups cause solo caching just plain sucks. But just maybe, I may be more aware of the COs feelings and intent and how I respond to it. (and, hopefully, COs will do the same).

Darn – I thought it was logged in as AstroD-Team. This is Kat posting, not Don.

I didn’t mean to start this with an innocuous statement last evening.

But, here are my thoughts after a night’s sleep.

Last night I heard Rep. Nancy Pelosi stand up in front of congress and state “we are “endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This legislation will lead to healthier lives, more liberty to pursue hopes and dreams and happiness for the American people. This is an American proposal that honors the traditions of our country.”

I believe in a country of advanced citizenship. Meaning that if you want a right, you have to be willing to stand up fight and earn it. The government’s role should be to ensure its citizens the ability to fight for their unalienable rights. This healthcare legislation seems to me to punish a segment of society that is willing to fight for their rights to try to give it to those that are unwilling.

Healthcare legislation is needed for those unable, not for those unwilling.

    Local angle:

This morning I heard Sen Feingold praising the bill, because it requires an 80% return from your premiums to your care. He stated it will be nice to see that instead of seeing glass skyscrapers in the center of cities with insurance companies names on them. I just wanted to ask Sen. Feingold what happens to the jobs and the lives of the people who work in those buildings. Cutting costs = cutting jobs.

My two cents, who is John Gault?

No where does the Constitution guarantee the right to charity. Which is exactly what this Health Care crap is. Forced charity by few for all.

*shakes head at the disgraceful nature of this country’s supposed representatives* (Yes, that includes both sides of the aisle!)

in reply to: Puzzle cache poll #1922262

Can someone explain to me how one person’s experience can have such a profound effect on another’s experience?

From what I’ve always seen and dealt with – no two people will have the same experience even when in engaging in the same activity at the same time. My experiences – good or bad – are unique to me and in no way does someone else’s experience add to or lessen mine.

I just seem to hear this statement as an argument, defense, supportive statement etc quite often in the WGA threads and at least one or twice in thread alone. I would genuinely like to hear people’s explanation to this. I admit, I’m completely baffled by such statements.

Oh – this is Kat responding. Didn’t realize hubby was autologged in as himself and not AstroD.

in reply to: back to school 2009 #1912884

My son is heading off to middle school in a few days. If that isn’t enough transition, we are putting him in a new school district. So he will not be with his friends he’s been with the last several years. Jacob is looking forward to the first day of school despite not really knowing anyone. And I’m looking forward to getting involved at the school as well.

CONGRATS GEO OWLS!!! You picked a worthy cache for a milestone!

in reply to: WHAT DID YOU DO? #1910409

Duck505 and I went golfing, mowed Grandma’s lawn, checked on his cache that has only had one person find it so far, spent too much money buying fireworks, and just finished lighting some of them off.

You gotta love a day off of work.

in reply to: Best GPSr for tree cover? #1909581

We use the 60CSx and I don’t remember the last time we lost the signal since we switched to it. Accuracy is pretty good as well, in open areas 9-12ft is the norm and 19-24ft is pretty typical in the woods.

That being said, my biggest complaint with the unit is the response time of the directional arrow. It tends to lag behind us which can be annoying when doing a multi.
