Community education would be the area I would most want to work on. Informing law enforcement about our hobby is more important now then it ever has been in the past. Given the current fear of “unattended packages” it seems to me that we need to educate law enforcement about geocaching and try to head off some of the unfortunate occurrences that have happened around the state involving geocaches being blown up.

I know that the community education committee has done some great work thus far and I would want to continue to support that effort.

I feel that as a whole the WGA has made great strides this year in a number of areas.

Some things that I would like to see if elected to the board is an increased outreach to other organizations that might benefit from geocaching in their programs. Such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boy and Girls Clubs, etc.

This type of outreach can help both those organizations as well as the WGA and the whole geocaching community as a whole.

As far as I know we haven’t completed any chalenge caches.

I see challenge caches as a possitive addition to the game. We hope to complete the Delorme Challenge someday.

Neither, you shouldn’t be cutting wires if you don’t know how much voltage and current is running through them.

Hypothetical situation (say, in some alternate universe):

To be a geocacher, you are required to find a minimum of seven caches a week but no more than 70 caches a week. How many caches would you choose to find each week, and how would you find them? (# days caching, # finds in an outing, etc.). Assume ideal caching conditions for each day, and feel free to add any creative details and variables.

Interesting question, thought I was reading a puzzle cache description for a second their. 😆

Since we do most of our caching on weekends I would say a weekly numbers run on Saturday or Sunday would work best for us. Though I think we would have to reserve the right to make an occasional FTF attempt if and when the opportunity presents itself.

Congratulations! You have just been elected to a two-year term on the Board of Directors! However, after eight months on the BOD, you find that it wasn’t what you expected it to be. How do you go about handling the remainder of your term?

I would finish the remainder of my term, and serve the members of the WGA to the best of my abilities. I do not enter into a commitment such as this lightly, and if elected I would serve out my term to the end.

    Candidates,
During your term on the WGA Board of Directors, there will be topics brought up, both online and in person, that are very controversial among geocachers. Sometimes there is no middle ground and you will most likely have an opinion one way or the other.

Without referring to any existing controversial topics, please answer the following two questions.

How will you respond when someone has an opinion that is the polar opposite of yours?

Not everyone is going to see things the same way that I do, if they did life would be pretty boring. I will listen to the other person’s opinion respectfully and though I may not agree with them I can hopefully learn something from the exchange of ideas.

    And…

Your opinion might go against the official opinion or decision of the BOD. How would you react in that situation?

Ultimately majority rules, and I will respect the decisions of my fellow board members even when decisions don’t go the way I would like them to.

*** What part(s) of Wisconsin (general or specific) have you cached in that you would like to return to for more caching or just to visit?

I would say that the area I would love to return to the most would be Door County. I loved the caching we did up there, and look forward to returning sometime this coming summer.

*** What part(s) of Wisconsin (general or specific) have you not yet cached in but would like to someday?[/quote]

This question is a little harder for me, but I would have to say the North West part of the state is an area that I would love to cache in and haven’t been able to do so yet.

    in reply to: Changes #1941495

Over all I feel that the WGA has adapted well to the changing face of the game. Areas that I feel we could improve upon are:

    1. More outreach to youth groups (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc…)

    2. Increased use of “social media” like Facebook, and Twitter. (which we are beginning to do)

in reply to: COTM vs. Favorites #1941634

    Thanks for the question!

I have to be honest here, I really haven’t done much with the either the old COTM or the new and improved COTM. That being said I know a lot of people have put a great deal of effort into improving the whole process and I feel that it is a valuable asset to the WGA and should be continued.

in reply to: Maintaining and Obtaining New Membership #1941592

    Thanks for the question!

    1. Attracting new members:

Advertise, advertise, advertise. We need to get our name out there as much as possible. We have made some good strides in this direction (WGA logo on cache pages, WGA pencils, WGA sponsored Geocaching 101 classes, etc) but I’m sure other areas could and should be explored.

Geocaching has come to the forefront in the scouting program in the past year. Finding ways to work with local scouting programs on the new Geocaching Merit Badge, or CITO events might be a way to get both future members as well as new current members from the scout leadership.

    2. Retaining members:

This is really a more difficult questions to answer. People leave groups for many reasons, some that really can’t be addressed at the BOD level. The best I think we can do in this area is be willing to listen to our members and do our best to address their concerns.

in reply to: Why Join the WGA? #1941774

    Thanks for the questions!

When we started caching we had never heard of the WGA and learned about it from a Google search. When I meet a geocacher out on the trail I would tell them about the WGA and the friendships I have developed because of the WGA. Without this organization I wouldn’t have met a number of wonderful people that I am proud to call my friends.

This is the number one reason I joined the WGA, and I think other cachers should join too.

in reply to: Event Planning #1941833

    Thank you for the question.

I have experience planning events ranging from Eagle Scout Ceremonies, Scouting Camp-o-rees, Court of Honors, and geocaching activities for scouts at various camp-outs. Over the past several years I have been in charge of the geocaching activity at both the fall and spring camp-o-rees for the Lakeshore District in the Sheboygan area.
