Shame I didn’t read this earlier – could have got this one within 20 miles or so as my folks live very close to Stonehenge and I was there a few weeks ago. Never mind!

Sounds great… have already done a few warm up trips up and down Rib mountain so I am more than ready.

Any guesses on how long it will take to get there from Wausau? Obvously I could look this up but figured you guys might already know!!

Count me in.. TBC just let me know about this and I haven’t been on here in a while either. Definitely up for a long snowshoe hike… I’ll even volunteer to go first :).

in reply to: Cache Bash 2009 – suggestions? #1897928

Firstly a huge thanks for a great event.. I had a fab time!!

In terms of suggestions for the future –
I didn’t have a cache goal in mind for the event but in the future if I don’t have my kids with me I would probably like to have a go at getting all the caches on offer. This year I did some of the longer hike ones and enjoyed these just as much as the quick ones.

I wrote this on my survey and this has already been mentioned, but as one with small kids, the more kid activities the better – this has to be a great way for them to enjoy the event and want to cache more in the future. If certain caches were designated as kid-friendly i.e. easier terrain, ammo cans with kid stuff in, or other points of interest that children in particular would enjoy that would be great. This could even mean temporary caches such as the one at the Friday event. Also, perhaps a key to those caches which are NOT kid friendly (ie lots of bushwhacking etc) so we know which ones to avoid. BTW – loved the roller skate cache!

Geocoins – I would have bought one if there had been some on sale. I heard many others say the same.

The goodie bag was great – got me 50% of my hotel room for the second night which was a treat, plus I liked the pathtag and other local info/ offers. I was more than happy to bring business to local vendors.. keeps everyone happy.

As far as prizes go – sure the idea that you have a chance at winning something is nice but certainly not the driving force behind the event. I think more things like geocoins, T-shirts, groundspeak stuff would be great.. although I know some stuff was handed out as prizes. In fact, it would be great to have them their as vendors – I am sure they’d sell a ton of stuff.

Anyway – that’s my input. Like I said – it was a great event and thanks for all that you did. I am looking forward to next year.

potential to hit 600… will depend on the kiddies enthusiasm/ openess to bribery though!!

I am excited to have so many caches to find in one area.. my finds will come down to the kiddies and how happy they are but we have Fri/ Sat/ Sun so if I get 50+ I will be very pleased. Would love to do the water ones and will bring my kayak but that’ll involve some negotiating with hubby to get done! love the idea of the diving one as well.. the more challenges the better. Can’t wait for it anyway!

in reply to: Geocaching Teaches Kids What? #1910668

OPS – you should publish that!!! Amazing – it really goes to show how much it teaches us and nothing can take away from those experiences that your family and others have had. I love the fact that it teaches people to “think outside the box”, to persevere, to admire and respect places previously unvisited, to work together and to problem solve. My whole family has been to places and done things we would never have done but for geocaching giving us a reason to go there. I cannot sing the educational praises of caching enough and believe me I do it on a regular basis… my goal is to get people out and about, as someone said, whatever the weather, being active, exploring their environment and putting what they are learning into real life situations. Quite possibly the best hobby/ sport I have ever come across!

wow – glad he was able to hold the guy off until help arrived. Hope the person in question recovers enough to be able to appreciate this man’s heroic efforts.

Totally deserved – fantastic series of caches!!! Wish I could get to do them all over again!! Congratulations 😀

Fabulous!! I can only imagine the huge number of memories, experiences, and laughs you and your families have both had on your way to 10000. Enjoy them all 😀

in reply to: Numbers, numbers, numbers—waxing philosophical #1909777

Got to add to what I said earlier… I LOVE caching even more when I can do some great exercise and find caches at the same time… kayaking, snowshoeing, running up hills.. and today was 5+hours of biking. Who needs the gym when you do that for a day?!

and yup – got past 500:D !! It was fun but very tiring!! no idea how people do more that 40+ a day!!

in reply to: Numbers, numbers, numbers—waxing philosophical #1909771

I think the numbers are more of a competition for me than anything else…that is with myself rather than anyone else. I go through phases of wanting to get a whole bunch done.. then life get in the way and I don’t have time for a couple of weeks, but I like the challenges that go with it. Its that competitive thing again!! One of the most fun things I have done are a couple of geocaching competitions at conferences where you are trying to find a bunch of temporary caches as quickly as possible, with the prizes being free conference entry for the next year. Now if there were more of those I would be in real trouble!! With two small kids and a full time job my time is limited but I try to include my kids where I can.. and drag my husband along once in a while too. I just love being outside exploring new places. Tomorrow I am making a trek out to Woodville to bike that cache-happy trail and I can’t wait! I guess the thing is whatever floats your boat!

very cool – surely you could market that?? Congrats on the article and the great idea.

If only I’d been as lucky as Gotta Run…
Unwittingly drove down a snowmobile trail (hey – looked like a road to me!) and got stuck… about 2 miles down in the middle of nowhere, -10F, and cell phone battery on low. Ended up getting a tow truck to get me but not before my husband tried to find me, which he did despite me telling him to just get a tow truck, and then got stuck himself on the way out. Total bill for 2 towed cars $170. Nice.

In addition to that – locked my then 13 month old daughter and my keys in the car while I was about to go look for a cache. Luckily I had my phone with me so the police came and sorted that one out.

Then there was the little bump I had after finding a cache… $100 or so for that one.. and two other near misses getting stuck on ice in March – the only bit of ice to be seen anywhere.

    But its fun though!!
