WTG Pete on 2K! Glad to see you out there on the edge! 8) 8) 8)
I didn’t get the chance to send out STF congrats before I left on vacation, so thanks Zuma! Another great log describing the travels along the roads less traveled.
Interesting Topic seeing our family just got back from a trip.
We LOVE to travel (Travel = trips outside of WI). For the past number of years we’ve taken at least trip somewhere. In some years (like this year) it’s been 2. Only within the last 16 months has there been caches in our travels. The very first trip we took as cachers instead of muggles was to Utah and Colorado. I was very green with caching at that time (my 7th ever cache was in UT) and only took the info for a few caches along (before paperless). I didn’t even understand virtual or ECs at that time. The caches we did were just one that I knew I could quickly sneak in along the way.
This year we went to KY & TN in June. I programmed potential P&G caches for the drive which I only did a small percentage that were either at waysides or at the gas station. I did vary our route slightly so we could pick a few up in a couple of states that we might not have gone through if not for caching. At our destinations, we only did the caches that were in the areas that we were going to visit anyway. There was only one case where a cache took us to somewhere that we hadn’t planned to go (Mingo Falls) but it ended up being one of the best hikes and sights of the trip.
Today we got back from Disney. I loaded the VCs for the parks before leaving. In this case, I found the caching got in the way. We were having so much fun I kept having to remind myself “at sometime, you need to power up the GPS). Glad I did them because it gave me a nice forum to reminisce over the memories, but I found it interfered in a way.
Looking back, I only wish I would have converted from muggle to cacher sooner because in retrospect there are many of my favorite places we’ve traveled that had caches I could have integrated. The top two are Angel’s Landing in Utah and Hanakapiai Falls along the Na Pali Coast on Kauai. These are two of my most favorite spots I’ve ever hiked. I would have loved to have added the caches to my “collection” to help memorialize the moment.
I guess in a nutshell… while traveling I’ve come to choose caches that ADD to the JOURNEY, not ones that ARE the DESTINATION.
Sure. You get that fancy new garmin, and what do you do? Ignore it! Good try anyway. Congrats. You’re catching up to me.
Congrats Chris and the rest of the team! Planned or not, passing a milestone deserves notice.
8) 8) 8)P.S. Ed – Since when is Waukau CJ territory? Who has the majority of the caches in that area? 😉
Congrats on the 1000+ finds! Hope it’s been a fun adventure. 😀
WOW! So happy you are still able to type and that nothing serious happened other than a good lesson for us all. I guess I’d never expect the inside of the ammo can to get that hot, but I suppose if it’s sitting open in the sun it would be like an oven in there.
Oh yeah, I forgot about Waymarking. Been meaning to look more into more, but that’s a good example of here is a site that offers a service I’m interested in and yet I still haven’t made a change to my habits.
Can you say USFL or XFL?
Makes me wonder how much research went into this before starting. To me, I don’t see a need for this. Before introducing a new product or service, the first question that should be asked is what do people STRONGLY dislike about the product or service that people are currently using. The only way people will change habits is because of significant pain or gain – the current situation is a pain or the new service provides great gain. (Think iTunes allowing people to easily carry all their music AND purchase songs individually instead of having to take a chance with the whole album)
While I don’t initially see anything wrong with Opencaching’s site (they pretty much copied the listing functionality of GCs site), I don’t see anything that it provides me that is significantly better than GC other than Free and the virtual caches. Free is fine, but not a big enough motivation for me to change my habits. I was a free GC.com member for my first few months and it was fine. I only decided to give them money because I liked the notifications and other features. If I didn’t think those were worth the price, I could easily revert to the free service again with no issue and still keep caching.
Besides, the $30 a year is a small chunk of change compared to the $30 – 60 per MONTH for internet service to access the site or the $200 or more for the GPS needed to start playing the game.
Personally, I would have focused the site completely on virtuals only. No worries of container overlap and it provides a unique service no longer offered by GC.com that people have been requesting come back. Now that is a site I might be more interested in adding to my mix.
The new final in the correct area just “re”published. All the previous finds are still there…including my FTF. 😉
Congrats on the milestone! I’ve appreciated the new caches you’ve been placing. Hope you had a great time in West Bend! Keep up the fun!
Sure…I head to your area for the weekend and you take off to hang out with thousands of other cachers. 😕
Hope you had a great time on your milestone day! 😀
P.S. Ask Sandlanders how profitable a trip to OshVegas can be for 777. 😉
Multiple Congratulations on many memories and milestones Dave!
That’s one Mega Milestone! Congrats on another 100 Pete! Can’t wait to see what the next 100 bring.
I’ve been on both sides of this.
I had a multi in an empty park I was ready to publish only to find out a “mystery cacher” had it “saved.” I checked around with my known local placers and no one claimed it. The reviewer did send a message to the “saver” and two months later because of lack of response it was finally released so I was able to have mine there. The process was frustrating mostly because I didn’t know who the other cacher was and all I could do was sit and wait.
On the other hand, I have a spot on “hold” right now. The reason I haven’t done anything with it is because it is near and will involve an area that is under major construction. My plan is to submit the cache shortly after the construction is complete. The spot is the planned final to a multi and because it is the best spot for the final, I didn’t want to lose it to someone doing a Duct Tape and Drop P/G nearby while I patiently wait for Road Construction Season to end. HOWEVER, if someone were to contact me with a reasonable request to release the spot, I would consider releasing it because I’m not ready and won’t be for a bit. It would depend on the timing and situation.
So…I guess where I stand is I think there is a place for “saving.” I think there is a place for it if a cacher is working on a complex or detailed cache over time and needs to make sure they aren’t wasting their time because just before publishing someone drops a pill bottle in a guardrail within a few 100 feet away. However, if a cacher is just hording spots without a specific idea in mind, that seems to violate the idea of it. Of course the problem is that line can be a very thin and gray line.
