Sorry to hijack your thread here but I just have to say that it’s nice to hear from hot dogs! I hope all is well down south. 🙂
OK, back on track. Unfortunately, I’m not going to Geowoodstock anymore because my cousin is getting married. However, I am still going to CO, just a few weeks later. If you want me to bring some TB’s with me, I could make that happen.

So camp with the rest of us winners! 😉

Just looking through old threads and spotted this one. Kind of funny since I completed the WI county challenge recently and the actual challenge cache is less than an hour’s drive from me and still haven’t gotten it yet. I’m hoping to finish off the Jasmer next week, not sure when I’ll be able to get over to the final challenge cache for that one, no plans to visit Governor Dodge any time soon.

I have always wanted to learn Spanish, growing up in California and Colorado I was surrounded by it. The last school year 1/3 of our kiddos were Spanish-speaking, so I made an effort to at least learn some common preschool phrases. This summer I’m taking a conversational Spanish class and trying to speak with my daughter who has taken it in high school the last few years. I’m pretty slow, but I’m trying! I’m kind of using an electronic device, though, because I’m also using an app on my phone to try and learn it.

Yea, a few years ago I taught a geocaching class at the YMCA and I lectured and lectured about geocaching etiquette. We found a cache of mine on the property together and I really had high hopes that all would be well. Nope, one of the kids took it a few days later. So it’s not just that people don’t know better, sometimes if there isn’t an interest to stay involved with the activity, if it’s just something fun they’re trying once, there just isn’t the motivation for longevity.

Ugh, that was a chilly night! But I think I was more cold at this year’s campout at Pinewoods. Last year’s picnic had a bunch of campers as well. I stayed for a little bit but, of course, didn’t use the campsite that I paid for. Good times!

Yesterday we were doing some kayak-caching and on one of the islands we found a rope swing up on a tree branch. My daughter gave it a try, it was hilarious. She was too tall for it and instead of swinging gracefully above the water, she collided with it. Lots of laughing!

I just booked site #12 so I’ll be your neighbors too. But with my track record with campsites, I might not be staying in it anyway. 😉 My plan is to go to Cranberry Fest on Sunday with the family.

So I noticed that Cranberry Fest in Warrens is the same weekend. I’m considering camping so that I can go to Cran Fest on Sunday after the picnic. Anyone else?

You had a nice way of giving information without a nasty tone, despite the sting of the loss of the ammo can. Well done. I agree, I wish that geocaching HQ would give a little more information before people could find geocaches.

Do you have a GC of a nearby traditional?

Pat, I’m sorry that you feel that the WGA isn’t soliciting and welcoming help from members. I would like to respectfully disagree, though. There is no way that we could carry on all that we do with just the 9 of us board members. All of us have families, jobs that pay the bills, and since we’re the type of people that volunteer for things we all have other activities that take up our time. We have had members helping out with many of our tasks that run the organization, we have help at every event planning and during, we get help with Geo 101’s around the state, speaking with local forest organizations, with our website, and so much more. Our members are awesome! Not sure when this shift happened but we have found that when we put out cries for help in the announcements section we have gotten very few responses from people other than yourself. We so much appreciate your enthusiasm Pat, thank you! But to include more people and get more of a response we have gotten in the habit of contacting individuals directly, as well as making announcements on the website and in different Facebook groups.
As to this particular forest, we chose it for a variety of reasons. This was discussed at much length at our board meeting and for several weeks beyond in our forums. We chose this location for several reasons, based on member feedback that we have gotten. I hope that you can trust that we have the organization’s best interests at heart, even if the choices we’ve made are different from your own. One of the reasons why we didn’t choose Buckhorn is that we would like to save that location for a campout, because of the nice new campground. And just like all WGA events, we will be forming a committee of hiders so that there are caches near the event. Our members always come through.

I think most of the changes in the rulings are good. I never realized how hard these challenges have made life for the reviewers. They’re volunteers and shouldn’t be given such a bad time. I also have no problem ignoring silly challenges, so a lot of the rules don’t really affect me since I wasn’t going for them anyway. The only one that I’m disappointed in is the whole rule about there being a checker. Most of the challenges that I’m interested in could never have come around if this were the case. I like the challenges where we have to get out and discover new things and places. There is no way to make a bookmark list of all of the caches that ever were or will be at state parks in Wisconsin, National Parks, waterfalls, natural features, WI weirdness (except that challenge was to find specific ones), etc. So this disappoints me, I probably won’t do as many challenges now because of it.

I also noticed two classic caches from 2001 that are nearby.
Make sure you find the right trail for the older one, that I mentioned above, or you’ll be in for quite the huffing and puffing.

The shelter that the WGA reserved is at the Castle Mound Shelter, if that helps.
Personally, I probably won’t camp because we don’t live too far away, I’ll probably make a day trip out of it. Although, I do have a reputation for reserving camping sites I don’t need for WGA events, maybe I’ll get the urge for this one too.
