I think the two most important things are to be respectful of the environment and property while I’m out caching, and to share this philosophy with others when caching in a group.  I think it’s when geocachers are inconsiderate of property that gives the game a bad name.  One thing that I like to do is when I’m out on the trails I give my kids each a bag and we pick up trash, our own little bit of CITO.  We like to mention it to people along the trails and hope that we can lead by example.  And of course creating CITO events can be an extra boost to creating a positive image.

One thing that I have been involved in is leading the Waukesha County 4-H geocaching project.  In order to keep up with the “communiy” part of the 4-H mission, the geocaching club will be taking on a project with Retzer Nature Center in Waukesha.  I will be helping the kids walk the trails and mark trailheads and access points for emergency vehicles.  The hope is that this will make mapping the park easier for the park service to explain to emergency vehicles when people are hurt out in the park.  We will be conducting this project in the spring.

Well, we lost a few posts of useless drivel when the squirrel went a little nuts, but I think we’ll survive.

I’d like to point out that there is a big difference between your favorite kind of caches and the ones that you have time to do.

My favorite caches are hikes in the woods, far from civilization.  However, I am a mom with three kids in various activities, that works and also volunteers for many different kinds of places.  Living in the Milwaukee area there were no shortage of PNG’s and sometimes I’d find them if I had time to kill.  In fact, every day I had about 45 minutes of time to kill between when I got off of work and when the kids had to be picked up from school.  Sometimes I’d run errands, sometimes I’d park and read a little, sometimes I’d pick up a couple of caches.

We do schedule family hikes as often as we can, but even then we usually can only spare a few hours between all of the kid’s various sports and activities, social obligations, etc.  Most of our caching out of our home territory has been on the way to or from another family event or kid’s activities or some other destination we’re already going.  This is when I choose a cache that helps me meet some sort of challenge.  The one that I’m working on the most right now isn’t a challenge, but it’s competing the WGA State Parks Series.  We’ve taken “the long way” home many times to pick up some caches.  I also want to do the 52 pick-up challenge but haven’t gotten too far on it yet.  So I run a PQ for qualifying caches and adjust our route accordingly.

We very rarely will have a full weekend, or even a full day, where we just choose an area and cache in it.  One day when the kids grow up I’m sure that will happen but it isn’t our reality now.

I also do love the brain burners.  I have had so many really awesome experiences showing up for a Ranger Boy cache (or other challenging hiders) and meeting with other local cachers.  The camaraderie and mental challenge is priceless!

And sometimes (probably the most frequent caching I do) I have an hour or two with my kids and so we will head to a park or some sort of attraction where caching comes second.  We enjoy the destination and pick up a cache or two while we’re there.

So this would be why I’ve found very few Trekkin and Birdin caches.  I’m sure they are amazing caches and I would enjoy them.  But I don’t have family in that area, or a church in our synod, my husband doesn’t have any clients there, etc.  We just hardly ever visit that part of the state!  Now that it’s closer I hope that will change, however.

            Re:  Gearhart Mountain

Wow, that is very cool!  My brother is like that, he’s climbed all of the Colorado 14ers for fun.  He took my 9 year old son up one of them this summer and they were amazing when some guy was sliding down a several hundred foot snow field.  They were sure he was committing suicide.  But no, he did it intentionally and had the gear to stop himself at the bottom.  Crazy!

Thank you beccaday! We “needed” four caches not real far from home for this Wednesday. This morning we see your two new ones on the Buffalo River trail…..we can enjoy those, get two of zuma’s “exit” caches along 94 and we’re good to go. We have not found caches on the Beef Trail since we first started caching, so thanks for placing yours!

Excellent! Bring your camera. 🙂  But it’s interesting, the traditional was found already but not the multi. Have fun!

Yay!  My new caches published!  Sorry, back to useless drivel….

My dog got into some of the kid’s candy today and puked all over the place while we were gone.  Fabulous.

I hid 2 caches today except that I need to make my WP1 for one of them.

Ooh, I think I may have found a place to hide a few caches at a reasonable distance to home.

There was a Bald Eagle circling the playground at my daughter’s school in Wauwatosa.

I see a bald eagle above Minooka in Waukesha once.

With the WGA SPS caches?  They’ve all been really good in my experience.

We’ve already got tickets to see Charlie Daniels with friends next summer.

I saw him in concert in 1994 in Longmont, CO.  He put on a great show, lots of energy.  And he’s so amazing on the fiddle!

You have so much self control!  I just couldn’t stand looking at those PQ maps and seeing those caches without smilies on them.
