If you are looking for a tech guru, I’m not your guy. I have average to above average computer skills, but I’m not going to fix the website if it crashes or anything like that. I can create cache pages and post to Facebook (though I’m cutting back on that time-waster). As a teacher, I could also help out with the newsletter, especially as a proofreader.

The following is from the WGA bylaws, posted on the WGA website:

Article II: Purposes The purposes of the WGA are to:

• Work as closely as possible with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and other property management officials to protect the rights of individuals to geocache in the state of Wisconsin.
• Provide an opportunity for geocachers in the State of Wisconsin to gather and socialize with one another.
• Promote the “Cache In Trash Out” and “Leave No Trace” programs to help in the maintenance of parks and trail systems.
• Educate Wisconsin geocachers about the responsible use of natural resources and educate non-geocachers about the sport of geocaching.

So the purpose of promoting CITO and working with the DNR and other land managers is still part of our purpose. I think that CITO or other project should be included in the campout and picnic, when possible. In addition, I would like to see at least one WGA sponsored CITO event in each of the 5 zones used for Cache of the Month, or each of the four quadrants of the state each year.

The example that I’m going to give is not about me, but it taught me a lot about accepting the decisions of the group. I worked for a convenience store chain for 5 years. For three of those years I was District Manager, supervising 8 – 10 stores. At one of our monthly management team meetings a suggestion was made to make a significant change in the way we delivered one of our most popular products. The president (and majority owner) of the company was against this change, but when the group voted to go ahead with it, he accepted and supported that decision. This is a man who owned 60% of the company. He could easily have said “No, this is my company and we are going to do things the way I want them done,” but he didn’t do that. If he can do that where his livelyhood is on the line, then I can accept decisions that I don’t agree with as well. In my experience serving on other boards, I have experienced this on several occasions. Sometimes it’s hard not to say “I told you so” when the decision doesn’t work out, but that type of attitude serves no purpose.

As a volunteer with the Boy Scouts, I often find myself working behind the scenes, often starting early in the morning, while others sleep, then going to bed early while the rest of the group plays. It’s a role I don’t mind.I also don’t mind stretching my comfort zone. In order to fly, one must be willing to leave the safety of the ground.

I’m not the cheerleader type. I tend to motivate others with quiet confidence and encouragement. I appeal more to the intellect than the emotion.

My spirit animal is the Bald Eagle. No, I’m not bald. The eagle soars high above all of the earth-bound animals. Likewise I try to rise above the petty, ego-centered fixations of the world to see myself, and the world, as we truly are. I avoid rumor and gossip and try to do what is right.

When the eagle spots a fish from on high, it dives to earth, pulling up at the last moment, clutching its prey. When I see something that needs to be done, I dive into it.

The eagle flies high in the sky, but also has strong legs to walk upon the earth. It lives high in mountains and swoops down to the earth to feed. Hence the eagle has great balance. I find balance in my life as well.

As of today I have found 6214 caches and hidden 76, 70 of which are still active. I also have DNF’ed more of raslas caches than I care to admit, so you’re not alone in that, WalkingAdventure.

I have been geocaching since Nov. 2009 and joined the WGA shortly thereafter. I have been to many WGA events. The most recent have been: 2017 WGA These Are The Pancakes You’re Looking For, 2017 WGA Spring Not So Pleine Pancake Breakfast, 2017 Spring Campout, and 8th Annual Chili & Hot Dog Feed. I also helped organize the 2015 WGA Lonely Cache Game Event: Mead Just for You.

While I personally agree with bartrod on park and grabs, it seems like most people today are more interested in quantity than quality. As a cache owner, I’ve noticed that my P&G’s get found much more often than my “walk in the woods” caches. I think that the key is to have a variety of caches so that everyone can get what they want out of geocaching. So how do we get new cachers to hide the quality caches that we enjoy finding? I think that the key is in education. I would like to see the WGA encourage members to do more 101 classes throughout the state, and include information about hiding quality caches.

It’s hard to pick one favorite. There are many excellent caches out there that are favorites for different reasons. “You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille” was a blast finding with a great group kayaking down the Plover River.

I will admit to taking some pretty crazy routes for the sake of geocaching, like the time I was in West Bend and picked up caches in Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, and Jefferson Counties on my way home.
