Bjornson is past Menomonie; it is outside of Knapp. They are great caches, I just wanted to verify their location since it is further west than just past Eau Claire.

Sure, zuma, put it out there for all to see when I have the old crawler for the Campout on the cache page. 😉

Fixed. But don’t check my other caches; I forgot about updating that and I’m supposed to be working right now.

        (Thanks for the endorsement.)

Well doggone it, now you’ve got me all curious. I’ll have to test this theory. I have an old Garmin that I’ll mount to a hiking stick just to see how well it’ll handle the abuse.

I have heard that various Garmins (eTrex, for example) have a problem with a connector for the display that is very sensitive to shock. Mine has a display problem that I just attributed to my abuse over the years but my geocaching coworker did a search on the subject when his had the same problem and found that others have experienced it. Supposedly, one of the major contributors to the problem is having the eTrex on a bike mount.

Dropping mine from the car and down into the dry storm sewer directly underneath the open door probably didn’t help it. 🙂

Jennifer makes a good point regarding the age of some of the caches mentioned. My cache with the bonus was placed in 2004. At that time there were few caches in the area and it was very unusual for someone to have found 500 caches, let alone thousands. I can think of lots of different ways I could do the offset cache now, but at the time I thought it was a nice way for people to see the trail and get a bonus smiley. There wasn’t the same type of numbers race as there is now so it didn’t look like someone was out “simply for the numbers” if they logged two hits on the same cache page. Smileys were more a way to record your adventures than anything else.

Three Bad Ribs in Wausau – hidden in 2001 – is a fine example. I would suspect that if that cache was hidden now it would be two different caches with a mystery final. Each of those caches is truly an effort to get to. (I only did two of them years ago, but have read the logs.)

It used to be a fun surprise to get to a cache and find that the owner posted coords to another cache nearby to find. Simply a bonus adventure, as intended, not a grab for numbers.

IOn a side note, why list them as a multi if they have separate log books and you expect someone to log it multiple times online? I would list them separately… The only reason I can come up with is you want to bend the .10 rule.

I have a cache that has a bonus find that I allow to be logged. In this case, the bonus location is really where I wanted the cache to be for the purpose of bringing people to an area of park that is seldom visited. However, if I had posted the coords to that location, some people would have parked along the road nearby and bushwhacked through the woods to the cache – missing the entire point. So, I put the “official” cache at another cool spot and left the hike to the bonus location up to the cacher. Most finders don’t bother with the additional cache. Maybe they don’t notice the coords in the logbook.

I asked mama cat for suggestions and she sent me a very detailed account of how to do 14 easy caches. At least five are in either on the walk in or in the area around the classroom.

I would be very happy to email the details to anyone interested – PM me. It really is a great forest to wander around in and her description makes it easy to do without climbing the big hills. The general summary is as follows:

“All of these caches [mentioned in the email] are close to trails. I think you can do caches 1-11 in about 2 hours hiking at an easy pace. I think you could probably do all the caches mentioned in this email in about 3 hours without a lot of effort. None of these will take you hiking up the great hills of Knapp!”

I hope this helps more people enjoy Bjornson!

Sorry, I can’t help with recommendations because mama cat typically archives the “older” caches and places new ones. I would bet that all the caches I found out there two years ago are archived and I haven’t had a chance to be back. I do know that you *won’t* want to do “Just Plain Evil” on this trip.

If you don’t get any recommendations, I would suggest you plot the caches on a topo map and choose the ones that are closest to where you will park – which is usually at the end of the road leading into the park, since there is a gate on the road. You will notice, from the topo map of the area, that there are some pretty steep hills. The entrance area is in the valley of them all. There used to be a couple that were located nearer this lower area so maybe she has continued that with the new ones.

Also, the caches do appear to be fairly close to I-94, but you have to drive north on Q and east on 700th Ave to get back to the entrance. It is worth the effort to get back there, even if you only go for the easier ones. It is a beautiful forest (complete with bears!)

I may not log all my finds, but I log all my DNFs for the sole purpose of letting others (including the cache owner) know that I had trouble finding it. I have no idea of how many of my DNFs have been actually missing – I suspect not many. But, I still want to give other geocachers the information that not everyone was able to find the cache.

Welcome! I’m not in the La Crosse area, so I can’t join you on the trails, but I wanted to welcome you to the WGA. I suggest you find a geocaching event to go to. It is great fun to meet up with others who also find enjoyment in searching for containers in the woods (and elsewhere), especially if you can compare notes on geocaches you have visited. There are some very social geocachers in your area – also, some first-to-find hounds. Hang out at a new cache and you may meet them (if you get there in time). 🙂

We had a feral-turned-indoor cat due to circumstances very similar to Bec’s. (I used a live trap instead of leather gloves.) She was named Xeno for the Greek word for “stranger”. Even though the other resident cat (Georgie) never got used to having a roommate, Xeno certainly got used to the easy life. I saw a mouse run directly over her paws and she just watched it run off. She never tried to get outside, either.

Sorry we missed you in New Auburn, but even more sorry that Lyme’s has struck you again. It sure does make you feel miserable until the antibiotics take hold. Hope he recovers quickly.

I noticed last night that some old timers in geocaching and previous forum contributors, Commander Bob and Major Brat, are staying in the camp area right next to Area 51.

Nope. I pretty sure all of the places mentioned in the posts were 20+ miles north of 29. Consider yourself lucky. Or, your “normal” is pretty horrible, in which case I don’t think you’re lucky. 🙂

When I was at the Ice Age Center last weekend, the volunteer/guide told us that it is the worst he remembered in his many years of living in the area (I’m guessing 50+ years). Two other, older, guys I met later said the same thing. I was turned away – just 70 feet from the cache – from a FTF because I couldn’t stand the deer flies anymore. I no longer had bug spray so was relying on the residual affects of the previous application. It wasn’t enough.

However, for mosquitoes, I have experienced worse at my house than this year.
