      Stay tuned for next year.

Having worked with Kent and the CVB folks for the first “event” I know what a hassle it is to organize this. I give Kent a lot of credit for even considering taking it on again. It must be like childbirth – the endorphins of the rush of hiding and finding made him forget the pain.

Many thanks to all the planners of last year’s CVB game. You did a lot of work for our enjoyment!

I am still planning on having a CITO event this year. The parks department was very happy with what we accomplished last year. As the time gets closer I will be looking for some volunteers to place caches in area parks that will be released on the day of the CITO event.

We can always hope for an other CVB event next year 🙂 .

Robin, make sure you let me know about this. I’d love to help out again if the day is available for me.

My greatest wish, that will never come true, is to go to New Zealand. I told my kids that I wanted some of my ashes split up into multiple small containers and placed as Travel Bugs in a race to get to New Zealand. Not only did they think I was weird (they are correct) but we were afraid people would be offended. Now I can show them that a precedence has been set and I am not the only odd person in the world.

Hopefully, this won’t be an issue for a long time. I wonder what the state of geocaching will be by then.

I am very happy with my Sansa 260. I could use more space, just for convenience, but I knew I wanted a flash memory device for durability (and price). I can’t put my entire library on the player, but it really doesn’t kill me to swap stuff around. I use it mostly to listen to books and, occasionally, for music. I periodically change the music loaded on it and remove/replace books as I finish them.

My only problems with it are that it doesn’t have a bookmark feature – which would be nice when switching from book to music – and the record button can very easily be accidentally activated (which is made more irritating by the lack of bookmark feature.)

What you are looking for really depends upon how you plan to use it. If you want to carry your entire library around with you, you’ll need a very large memory. If you are satisfied with swapping stuff on and off, you can get by with a much cheaper device.

If you don’t mind refurbished, keep an eye on http://www.woot.com. They sell one item a day but seem to frequently offer mp3 players.

If Grant (who doesn’t geocache) hadn’t sent me the link to geocaching.com in 2002 I would not have met some really great people I very much enjoy, even though I don’t get to see them often enough.

If I hadn’t introduced Julie (lou mag) to geocaching when we were killing time at a Destination Imagination meet, she wouldn’t have taught numerous geocaching classes to the students at Chippewa Falls Middle School or added to the cache count in Chippewa Falls or taught geocaching at adult ed in Rice Lake or had her sons introduce it to their Boy Scout troop. Also, my daughter may not have fallen into the the swamp while crossing a log on that first outing. But, if she had anyway, she wouldn’t have had Julie to calm her down and make it seem okay.

                  Welcome to geocaching!

As to name/teams – in my family we each have our own geocaching.com name and WGA name. This is mostly because I first joined up with a name that included my children, but then my spouse got interested (and we usually geocache separately) and my son wanted his own ID. However, it is also useful on the WGA site to have your own separate ID’s so you have distinct votes on WGA matters (16 and over). You can still have one vote per eligible member even with team names, but it may be easier (for those checking) if the WGA ID’s are separate (if you plan on voting.)

I look forward to hearing about your Christmas Day geocache finds! Good luck! I hope the snow isn’t too deep. (My first find was in many inches of fresh snow.)

Thanks for the feedback. Right now we’re leaning more toward a pickup. It makes more sense, at this time, to buy a vehicle that does more than transport people. There are a lot of used F150’s available – probably because they are an extremely popular truck. I’d still like to hear comments on the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute in case my Suburban were to meet an untimely death.

Thanks! This is the type of feedback I’m looking for. I hate buying something and then, after the check is written, hearing lots of negative information about what I just bought. Even if I do buy something with negative comments, at least I’ll know what I’m in for.

As a pay back, if you are looking at a used Subaru Outback – pre98-01 – please look into issues with the head gasket. We had a 98 Outback, purchased new, with the intention of having it be the car the now-16-year-old would drive. Last year it died due to a cracked block. Previously we had suffered through the expense of a supposedly cracked head gasket, not knowing it was just the warning of the what was to come. The Subaru mechanic acknowledged it was a known problem; the official Subaru talking heads know nothing about it.

No trail riding. This is a commute vehicle, but I desire another 4WD due to where I live. I have a 1/2 mile driveway with steep uphill curves. The driveway comes off of a town road, which is off a county road. We are never the first plowed out. We are 16 miles of county roads to my kids schools; 20 miles, mostly county roads, to my work. So, no off-road requirements, just traction on road. Also not needed for towing, since my Suburban could handle that.

This may also be the vehicle my 16-year-old son drives.

Hope this helps. I really do hope for feedback because I truly hate buying vehicles and anything that helps me make a decision is greatly appreciated.

                        Thanks,

Many thanks to all the organizers, temp hiders, and temp retrievers of this event. I know the effort it takes to run these events and I really appreciate all that was done by a few for the enjoyment of many. Wildcat is a beautiful park and it was great to enjoy my first visit with friends.

Do you have an agenda for the Board meeting?

I know this is very late, but I was just looking back at some things and remembered that when I had some questions about the authority of the committees, some of the issues were tabled for the future. Specifically, Jeff R. mentioned it being addressed at the September meeting. I was just wondering if any of these issues would be addressed. Even if not, I’m just curious what the agenda is.

Here is what was written earlier this year:

In my opinion, then, the Board needs to specifically define where the committee has authority. Perhaps it should be within a certain budget or some other limiting factor. If the committees must bring every decision to the Board for a vote there is less of an advantage in having a committee structure.

I foresee this as something that we will probably deal more with at our September meeting once we’ve given this time to work a little. We will be doing more with budgeting then, and I could see that being one of the “limiting factors”. For now, I guess, it falls on the heads of the board members on the committee and/or the co-chairs to bring any issues up with the board if needed.

For example, does the Campout Committee have the authority to determine the fee schedule (t-shirts, camping, pancake breakfast) or does that go to the Board? Can the Education Committee spend money on literature without Board approval? Can the Picnic Committee authorize a Lake Superior cruise for the committee members to determine the practicality of a WGA picnic on Madeline Island? 😀

My personal opinion would be yes, unless there are major changes; yes, within reason; and if it helps to get people to volunteer for the picnic committee, why not? 😀

You are correct, in pointing out that there are no clear definitions of areas of responsibility, etc. But this is all part of the growing we are doing.

                                  Again, just my thoughts…
