Way to go, Mike. Keep up the good work.

I’d love to meet you folks as well. My cache hunting is dependant on my work schedule. I either search alone, with my son, Danny, or wait until my girlfriend, Robin (Norwegianbird) has some free time for cache hunting. I have also cache hunted with a number of other area cachers either by design or by running into them on the trails. That’s usually the funnest part..when we all share geocaching stories. I’m hoping to get out tomorrow afternoon, and hit a few in the area as well.

    8. It would’ve been 9, but I couldn’t remember if one of the members was still on the board from before.

It was at “the Buzzy Holly Cache” GCWGEF. From the looks of it, only one other previous finder had found the cache. It was only about 2 ft from the cache I was looking for, in fact I actually spotted this one first since it wasn’t covered at all. I talked to Senior Searchers about it, and Bill said he would contact the cache owner, Ribarnica. The cache would have been named “El Cheapo” or something like that, and it was placed there sometime in 2004. I have no idea whether he tried to list it, or why it wasn’t published previously.

The new cache with all the names in the log book…now that’s something. I wonder if they found the right cache. Last weekend, while searching for a local cache, we came across another container nearby that I initally thought was either a decoy or a bonus. I opened it up and read the logbook and saw that it was supposed to be a cache that was placed there about 2 years ago, but never listed.

Good idea, Dave. I’ll check it out, too.

    in reply to: Letterboxing #1764854

I look for them on occasions, but not anywhere near as often as I do geocaches. One main reason is that there are far fewer of them around. They involve following directions that pertain to landmarks and may require a compass for bearings and pacing off in a certain direction (like projecting waypoints). Sometimes the instructions may seem vague or confusing, unless you know the area really well. On occasions, letterboxes are found on accident by geocachers while searching for caches. I have found a couple like that myself. Most of them tend to be like rubbermaid or tupperware containers of what we would classify as ‘small’ in size. They contain ink pads so letterboxers can stamp that they were there in the logbook. Some have small trade items in them, too.

I believe that if you already had posted the find (obviously there was a cache page) it shows up as a find, since it was an actual cache, regardless as to how long it was in existence. Of course that’s when it was available. Now that it’s unavailable, I don’t know if you can anymore, but once a find is listed, as long as the cache owner doesn’t delete it, it stands.

Does the Bonus cache for Nemesis #3 count? 😉

in reply to: Look out for WHAT? #1764526

    Scary for sure.
Bubonic plague, the same thing that was known as the Black Plague in Europe in the 1300’s is endemic mostly in the southwestern United States. It’s caused by bacteria that are carried by infected rodents. Other things to be wary of are tick borne diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted fever and Lymes Disease, the latter of which is found in Wisconsin.

You could be referring to offset caches, where the coords take you to a general locale or structure, and instructions of one sort or another tell you how to search from there. Shelter hides can be approximate, with typical variations of GPSrs from one unit to another, or they can bring you to the shelter and state that it’s on there somewhere, and Good luck.

As for the Nemesis series, Norwegianbird and I have found 7 so far, and look forward to taking on the others. Some are pretty difficult, and may require multiple visits in order to find them. Degrees of difficulty reflect that. We have found the coordinates to be good within a reasonable radius of 20 ft or less, which considering that some are hidden in wooded areas, is quite adequate. What makes them tough is the type of hides themselves. As for the cache in question….don’t expect a quick find, but rather, look forward to a good challenge.

Another way, if you have a calculator handy, is to take the seconds and multiply by 1000 and then divide by 60. 42 degrees, 43 min, 30 sec would be 30 X 1000/60 or 500 or 42 43.500.

I can go fetch it if you’d like.

in reply to: Reading your cache logs #1763389

I am also guilty of adding pictures after the fact. I even had a log deleted because of a picture I added later on which was too revealing as to the mystery location of the cache. I guess I could email the owners of the caches when I add pics or note major changes. As a cache owner, I do read every posting to my caches, plus, I often review my cache pages to check for updates and pictures, but it’s not always possible to detect all the changes that occur afterwards.

Good to know what that plant is now, too. I’ve been seeing more of it around this year, including in my yard. It seems harmless enough to us, but it’s rather invasive.
