It is a pretty good article with a nice bit of information.

Over 300,000 active caches….I better get busy! 😀

Thank you for volunteering and for helping our hobby continue.

If I ever had the opportunity, I’d love to cache with Bushwacking Queen…. Why you may ask. If you look at my legs and see all my geo-stripes, the reason should be fairly obvious. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line… through the buck thorn! 😀

Perhaps at an upcoming event you’ll have an opportunity. My tiny ankles have many scratches already this spring season, as do my legs and arms.

WI_Robin, very well said! Obviously you put a lot of time and effort into your post and it is very thorough in communicating what a lot of us feel. Thanks!! I echo what the others have said!

This hobby/sport is played different ways by different people from all walks of life. Some adhear to the established guidelines, some don’t, however, one thing that is followed is the placement of caches as they are monitored by our approvers. Those approvers volunteer their time for what may seem like a thankless job, but really we are all very thankful for the time and energy they dedicate to the hobby/sport we all love or come to love. The approvers can request a cache be changed to a multi, however, if it follows the guidelines established by geocaching.com being .10+ away from one another, as well as other guidelines, the caches should be approved, even if the urging to make it a multi falls on deaf ears.

The great thing about the way the geocaching database has been created is that we (cachers) can select all different attributes that meet our own desires (traditionals, multis, difficulty level, terrain level, kid friendly, etc.). We also have the ability to look in our maps or our queries and say, “Hm, there are a pocket of caches in this park — I do/don’t think I’ll hunt them.”

In Illinois, Panther in the Den has a Can Can Series. 18 caches along a trail. Every fourth cache is a puzzle with the coordinates coming from the three caches prior.

Special Ed and Fallen Fairy have a series along a bike route on Lake Shore Drive, each is a traditional cache and can only be reached by walking the stretch or renting a bike.

Multi caches are difficult to do on your own because if you can’t find a waypoint you can’t log what you’ve found. I’ve stayed away from multi-stage (more than two) multi caches for this exact reason. I attempted a 7 pt multi on my lunch hour only to have a difficulty reading the fourth waypoint. I did another 4 or 5 point multi but couldn’t find waypoint three. The owner of the cache said he too dislikes multis.

In Chicago they have a series of many (I’d be lieing if I said how many), however, you either have to walk or bike the 8+ miles and there are more than 20 caches I believe. If the caches meet the guidelines established by GC.com the caches should be approved. If it is something that the approver doesn’t want to do though it meets the guidelines then that is showing a bias.

I know our approvers are volunteers and it seems like a thankless job, however, to do the job you have to follow established guidelines (a.k.a. GC.com) and not what they want to see happen with geocaching.

The “Off-Topic” forum would probably be a more appropriate place for this thread.

Perhaps but what difference does it make?

I have a meridian Gold, actually two, and I do enjoy them. I purchased MapSend DirectRoute software off the internet at a deep discount and install various maps on my SD cards depending on the area I am traveling to. Though the DirectRoute will give you turn-by-turn directions (EarthAngel of ecorangers utilizes that aspect of the software per her logs), I use it primarily for the defined street maps which is better than the other MapSend software.

If you have specific questions and would like to email me, please contact me through my profile on the geocaching website.

Where did you find one for $120? It would be worth it for me to pick up another! 😮

My opinion is that it really doesn’t matter how it is done someone will most certainly think its unfair. We can’t please all the people all the time so we just need to do what we feel is right for us, the way we want to keep track of our finds.

Amazingly, none of the people complaining have ever been to Fu’s events where we REALLY have to work for them. Every one of her hides could be considered permanent, however, because of where they are hidden they can only be temps.

Anyway, people will always complain about something because that is the way our society happens to be. My numbers mean something to me and I surely don’t expect them to mean something to someone else. If they do, great. If someone wants to provide me kudos for my numbers, fantastic. However, those that feel anything about my numbers (good, bad, or indifferent) should realize that this is a hobby and though there are basic rules to play, we all play it slightly differently.

Furthermore, though I may be beaten up for this statement, its just like ethics. Ethics are opinions of what is considered acceptable and unacceptable to each individual/society/group. Just because I feel something is acceptable, someone else may feel it is unacceptable.

I think of what a wise professor of mine once said to my class and I: Agree to disagree!

😀 Thanks everyone. Though I don’t completely do it for the numbers, numbers drive me to get those caches. I’m an accountant and if you know accountants, we don’t count anything without a calculator. My calculator is geocaching.com, I hope the calculator doesn’t break!

It’s been a busy two plus years on the trails. In that time I’ve made many new friends, strengthened friendships with existing ones, pushed my body to it’s limits and then some, challenged my mind to think like others or just to think hard to solve problems, used more “girl” trees than I have ever in my life, and been to and seen many different places that I wouldn’t normally have had my eyes “open” to.

In the time I’ve been caching I’ve also completed my BA (yes with highest praise), am currently pursuing my MBA, and changed jobs that have increased my responsibilities. I’ve seen my son graduate middle school and moved onto high school, watched my son play baseball, basketball, and football in towns across many states (which thanks to geocaching and my GPSr I can get around town very comfortably), and have had the pleasure of having my son drive me around practicing his driving skills (and testing my understanding of what direction is right and what is left 😆 — joke to those that have cached with me).

Yes I know there is life beyond geocaching and I have a fuller life to be able to fit it in along with all the other activities in my life.

Looking forward to the next time I see/meet you on the trails….

What’s this “Diane” stuff? I thought your name was Susan. I suppose the phone number is fake too! 😳

😕 Well Gusty Winds, not sure who Susan is and what number you are talking about. I’ve been called Denise before (my twin sister’s name), on occasion Debbie (guess I look like a Debbie to some), but never Susan.

Could you be mixing me up with PolskaQueen (not sure what her name is) by chance? ❓
