  • in reply to: "Waypoints" feature for multi-caches #1764565

It would be really helpful if anybody who has a multi-cache or mystery cache could enter the waypoints for their cache(s).

It really speeds up the cache approval process, and also helps keep other caches from encroaching.

When the hidden waypoints are added to the page does this mean the reviewer can see all the multi stage waypoints?

Yes. When the hidden waypoints are added, the owner and the revieer(s) can see them.

Does it still help to email the reviewers a waypoint file for a cache submission?

No, not really. The waypoint feature should be all that is needed.

Speaking as somebody who also has a long geo-handle, I solved the problem by getting a stamp made….

    Info about the stamp

I would encourage you to keep your original geo-handle and buy a stamp (unless it is already too late).

I’ve seen polls on the forum, I thought they were and administrator “thing” how do you make one?

I went ahead and added the poll for you.

The option is there when you start the thread. After a certain time, posts become un-editable except by an administrator, so unfortunatley you cannot add it now.

Our DESIRED spot is over 475 feet away from the ‘faux’ waypoint of the existing mystery cache, but not QUITE far enough.

Normally, the published “bogus” co-ords for a mystery cache would not be subject to the proximity guideline (0.1 miles) as long as they are truly “bogus”. If the spot that the published co-ords take you to is an integral part of the mystery cache, then it would be subject to the proximity guideline, as it is more like a multi-cache.

I will pass on the concerns voiced here to the DNR.

Any response I get I will also pass back along in this forum.

I appreciate all of the comments and that everybody has kept it very civil, even for a very sensitive topic such as this.

As I hear anything I will keep y’all up to date.

    Not good is right….

I’m going to try and head this off at the pass……

In addition to the cache mentioned above, there have been a few others that needed to be archived. Here is a copy of the e-mail (to the geocaching.com reviewers) received from the DNR today.

While browsing around on the WGA website, I came upon…

Each of these is within a designated State Natural Area (some are state-owned, others are not). In keeping with the policy, and to remain consistent, I’m requesting that you archive these caches.
    Let me know if questions.
    Thanks.

In discussions with the DNR, the caches inside of the State Natural Areas came up. As I understand it, the DNR is looking to reduce the quantity of traffic coming to SNA’s, primarily because of invasive species problems. To quote a portion of another e-mail received from the DNR:

Regarding the State Natural Areas issue. I had talks yesterday with the Bureau of Endangered Resources (who administer the SNA program) as well as our own Bureau Director on the subject of either grandfathering in caches at SNA’s or reviewing all requests to see if some of them might be in areas where damage will be minimal. Our conclusion is that we need to stay black and white on this, and not get into the world of ‘grey’. Here are the major concerns: At Lone Rock for example there are no established trails other than a snowmobile trail whose easement pre-dates the states purchase of that property. It is a very pristine property and is currently free from the major invasives (garlic mustard, purple loosestrife etc.) that are ravaging many of our state properties. The primary way of moving invasives is on boots…so hiking in pristine areas that the state and its citizens would like to protect, can be considered harmful. While a person is not forbidden from hiking in most SNA’s, we do little to encourage it and hope that minimal traffic will continue to protect these areas.

In my dealings with the DNR folks in Madison, they have been VERY pro-geocaching. I believe they are just trying to keep these state natural areas as pristine as possible.

I was really looking for a bit more…. like “with sugar on it”, but oh well. 😉

    How about this?

in reply to: Regional Forums?? #1766680

I did a quick tallky of the first 15 topics in both the “Announcements” and “General” categories and I evaluated them in one of three ways…
A topic either falls into the “Statewide Interest”, “Southern” or “Northern”. Here’s what I got…

Statewide Interest: 22 of 30 topics.
    Southern: 6 of 30 topics.
    Northern: 2 of 30 topics.

I’m interested in all of the topics, South, North or whatever. I would enjoy reading about what is going on in all parts of the state. If we do start up regional forums, I intend to read them all anyway, and I won’t have a problem posting in them if I have something of value to add, no matter what part of the state they are for.

Long story short: I don’t really see a need, but I don’t see any real downside to having the regional forums.

Great presentation. I loved your spin on it.

in reply to: WGA Admin retires from the reviewing business #1766506

Well, you’ve finally gone and done it…. good for you.

I must say that I’ve learned a lot from working with you. I’ve always admired your ability to craft e-mail messages that came across as positive, often when they contained bad news.

Your geocache reviewing efforts will be greatly missed. Maybe now you will finally have more time to dedicate to geocaching, WGA and the BOD? 😉

If you get any admin-related e-mail, feel free to forward it to my account and can take care of it.

I have posed the question in the Board Of Directors forum for discussion there….. stay tuned.

in reply to: Suggest a place for a WGA event #1763130

If you are serious about having a WGA event in your neck of the woods, get out and do a little legwork.

For starters, head on out to the venue that you think would be a great place to have a picnic or campout.

    See if there is…

    – Adequate room for 100 or more tent campers at a group site(s).
    – Parking for 100 tent campers.
    – A shelter with lots-n-lots of parking nearby for registrations & such.

Post pictures and comments here with your findings.

You could even talk to the park management, and see if they would be willing to host a group such as ours.

Keep in mind that you may be asked to help out with scouting the park as the event time approaches, helping temp hides, and providing local info (gas, groceries, hotels etc..).

in reply to: Trapped TB #1766123

That cache has some problems with it’s final location (RR, Bridge, etc…), and has not yet been published.

I would suggest sending an e-mail to the owner.
