So far this looks great. I’d like to try and take on a mission but I haven’t found one of these yet so how does that verify if it is a DNF?, as in, it was removed by the owner or someone else and nothing was said.

That being said, If I was to find it and verify it, can it also be logged as a find? Maybe that is for a reveiwer to answer.

It would probably be better if the person going on on the rescue mission for a particular cache had actually found that cache before (and remembers about where the cache is). Although actually having found the cache in the past is not a requirement to going out and rescuing it.

If you haven’t yet found the cache and you set out to rescue it then you actually find it, I suppose you can log it as a find if you want. However, if there isn’t a cache there (which is likely), it would probably be bad form to log a find.

As best as we can, we are going to try and verify that a rescue mission was successful. It would be nice if when you find bits of a cache being rescued, if you could post pictures of those bits to the cache page. Or maybe you could post a picture of the empty stump, or the pile of sticks with nothing underneith it.

    I found this…..

    From March of 2001….

    Archive Of Geocaching.com

    I found it quite interesting…

Looks like we got ourselves a good old-fashoned mystery here….

Maybe we can get Shaggy and Scooby on the case?

There are no nearby archived (not listed) caches on geocaching.com. Maybe it is part of another geocaching game? (Navicache or something?)

The new cache with all the names in the log book…now that’s something. I wonder if they found the right cache. Last weekend, while searching for a local cache, we came across another container nearby that I initally thought was either a decoy or a bonus. I opened it up and read the logbook and saw that it was supposed to be a cache that was placed there about 2 years ago, but never listed.

What other cache was this near, or what were the co-ords of the unlisted cache?

    You found it…..

    You can log it……

But be honest as to how you found it in your log.

in reply to: Three Bad Ribs Status?? #1764983

I was contacted by Bill Bursaw, the property manager for Rib Mountain State Park as soon as the DNR announced their policy.

He wanted the cache owner to fill out the geocache notification form. Since then I have been trying to reach the owners without any luck.

Some info coming back to me from the recent event there this past weekend indicates that their might be a new State Natural Area, which would likely spell bad news for this cache.

So…. offically, there is no news regarding this cache (yet).

in reply to: How did you find out about geocaching? #1764700

I first read about geocaching in a Milwaukee Sentinel article back in the summer of 2001. It was near the back of the “Metro” section, and couldn’t have been more than about 400 words. I already had a GPSr that I used for snowmobiling, so this sounded quite interesting.

I told my wife about it, she also said it sounded interesting, so off we went to find the cache closest to our house: Vernon Marsh (GC65A) by jvechinski. Did I forget to mention that our first attempt at this cache involved shorts, sandals, a 3-year old, and a 7 months pregnant wife? For those of you who remember this cache, it was about a 3/4 mile hike down a two-track running through a swamp (er… marsh). The flies and the mosquitoes were terrible. We wound up not finding the cache. My 3-year old daughter was crushed that we didn’t find the “treasure”. We took her out for Ice Cream and that seemed to smooth things over a bit.

After that first experience, I’m surprised we ever tried it again, but we did. We actually found our first cache later that summer in August of 2001 (under a different screen name). Been hooked since then.

If you know the geocaching name of people in the pictures, please post here the picture number (or current caption) and who the people are (left to right).

    I don’t know for sure…..

Even if the cache is retracted, the cache page still exists. It is just not viewable to anybody except the admins and the owner. So, my guess is that since the cache page still exists, the “finds” would still exist.

Maybe one of the two people who managed to find this cache prior to it being retracted could let us know?

E-mail or PM me the coin number.

Unfortunately, I had to retract this cache. Retracting a cache is like never publishing it in the first place, which is why nobody can see it anymore.

I have some concerns about how it is hidden, and right now I am waiting for an e-mail back from the owner(s). If it is in a good spot, it will be re-listed and good to go. If it is in a bad spot and the owner(s) choose to move it, it will be re-listed in the new spot. If it is in a bad spot and the owner(s) choose not to move it, it will be archived.

I’m sorry for the confusion this has caused.

When we were meeting with the DNR, they mentioned that they were getting asked by local cities and parks departments about how they were handling geocaching.

I would expect to see some local parks departments adopting the DNR policy.

Way better than just saying “NO” to geocaches.

in reply to: Long Disabled Cache Cleanup Policy #1763489

Most cachers that did not respond haven’t logged into the site in quite a while. It was not the case that they were still active cachers placing more caches.

This is a great bit of HTML code put together by one of our members on a geocache they placed on DNR property after they submitted the form.

    Thanks to Draconis!
