    oooooooohhhhhh yeeeaaaahhh.

(Now I NEED a cold shower)

Thanks everybody for the offers of help.

I have given this class a couple of times up at the Ice Age Center in the Kettle Moraine Northern Unit.

What we did last at the last class (last summer) I thought worked really well. We had two short hiking loops with several temp caches hidden on each. We had three experienced geocachers (Beast, Geopink and Myself), so we split up into three groups. One group went to ONE geocache, just to see what it was about, then they chose to go home. One group finished an entire loop, got more of a taste for it, then decided to go home. The third group found all the caches on both loops and were very gung-ho about the whole thing.

I figure if we have a half-dozen or more experienced geocachers showing up, we can split up into more (and smaller) groups for an overall better experience.

In the past, I have hidden event style “temp” caches – decon containers with a stamp inside. I have also hidden an ammo box (properly labeled, of course), that the Naturalist has loaded up with Smokey The Bear trinkets & such for people to take with them. No need to trade in that geocache. I plan on doing more of the same this time.

In the classroom portion, I mention other variations on the game…. multi-caches, mystery caches, and virtual caches, but for the outdoor portion, I try and stick to the simple single-stage “normal” geocache.

I have been working with the Naturalist at Bong, and we are coming up with a “jthorson” quality camo hide for one or two of the temp geocaches. It should be a lot of fun.

I will try and post a link to a “.gpx” file containing all temp caches I place, as well as all the permanent caches in the park (for the really adventureous).

I already have a dozen spots picked out on the self-guided nature trail to the south of the visitors center, I’ll probably wind up using only some of them. There doesn’t seem to be many short loops originating from the visitor’s center, so I might just place some more heading out one of the trails, maybe towards the closes permanent geocache.

I might try and head down there this weekend (Memorial Day) to pick a few more spots. If somebody closer wanted to head out and choose them for me, that would be great too. Just send me an e-mail. I need the co-ords, description, name etc.. for all temp caches so I can have the DNR print up some handouts for the class.

    Dejay,

I was at Bong on Thursday afternoon, and scoped out places for about a dozen caches. The problem is, these caches are all pretty much on the same hiking loop, and they are all very close together (as close as 300 ft in some cases).

If I could get maybe another half-dozen easy temp caches placed on another loop, that would be great. I could then use only half of my spots, and another half-dozen on another loop.

There is a self-guided nature trail to the south of the visitors center, and that’s the loop I have planned to hide temps on. If you could find anohter short loop (a mile hike or so) that’s hikable from the visitor’s center, to place more temp caches on, that would be fantastic.

If you want to place some permanent ones, that would be OK too.

The presentation will take place at the “Molinaro Visitor’s Center”.

    Thanks,

    Tie.

I Haven’t yet looked too closely at the layout of the existing permanent caches in the park, but I intend on having a series of temp caches in close proximity (short hiking loops) to the classroom.

For the more interested students, they can venture out far and wide into the park and find some of the permanent ones.

Because the folks at Geocaching.com don’t really care, the WGA came out with a policy on temp caches at WGA sponsored events:

    quote:

Last year we asked for your opinion on logging temporary caches at WGA events. Most of you who voiced an opinion said you would like to be able to log each temp cache. The board has listened and voted to adopt the following policy for WGA events where temp caches are placed:

    # The WGA encourages each geocacher present for the official event photo (traditionally at 5pm) to log a “find” for the Event itself by logging “has attended” on the event webpage.

    # The WGA shall neither require nor forbid anyone from logging temporary caches at any of our official events.

    # The WGA will allow geocachers to log a “find” for any cache that geocachers have actually found. Admittedly, we are not able to police those logging caches or verify that geocachers have actually found the caches. We are using the honor system here and will assume that our fine members will not abuse it

    # All geocaches hidden at our events will follow the guidlines as set forth at http://www.geocaching.com for cache placement. However, exceptions will be made for the proximity and the obvious temporary nature of the event hides..

in reply to: problems accessing wi-geocaching website #1761544

2 out of 3 computers had no problems accessing the wi-geocaching.com website, but one was a problem.

I went ahed and cleared out the history, the cache, and the cookies, then it started working wonderfully. (Firefox 1.0.7)

“The new coordinate is too far away from the original. Please create a new listing instead.”

guess I could just archive the listing and make a new one but that seems kinda silly. is there anything else I can do?

Send me an e-mail with exactly which cache it is, along with exactly what you would like to do, and I can take care of it.

It is my understanding that the three laptops we will have at the campout all have RS-232 ports on them. I will be bringing along TS’s eggplant-download-switchbox-whatchacallit-gizmo, (thanks TS) as well as a USB cable compatible with many of the Garmin units.

    Thanks for picking this up.

I did a quick look in the Underwood Parkway area (south of 108th & Capitol Dr) and found nothing submitted to geocaching.com and never listed that would fit the description. Do you have any idea EXACTLY where it was found?

He is the geocahcing.com reviewer for Minnesota. There is a cacher up in the NW corner that was having some sort of a mass release of caches, both in MN and WI. All of the WI caches were reviewed by me or Grousetales and found to be OK, but it was Surfer Joe who published them (all at the same time).

    Any takers?

In my PDA, the batteries are required to keep the memory alive and all of the data in place.

What I do is have a set of alkaline batteries that I pop in while I’m charging my Ni-MH ones.

Get a hold of the detailed maps to load onto your GPSr. Mapsource Roads & Rec will give you the most bang for the buck. The 8MB of memory in your Legend should get you almost the entire state of Wisconsin.
