    I stand by my record….

With my Garmin, I’ve found well over 300 caches.

On the other hand, I have not found even ONE SINGLE CACHE with a Magellan.

I think you can find the answer here.

    Or, better yet… here.

Hold onto your hats folks… I’ve heard from TPTB at Groundspeak.

    Their E-mail response:

    quote:

Yes, we can definitely do this.

Here is some additional information regarding our geocoin tracking policy and requirements.

First, unlike the usageocoins, the tracking numbers printed on all new coins must be alphanumeric, rather than solely numeric. The purposes for this is to avoid people being able to guess the numbers and falsely log coins/TBs.

The format can contain a prefix (like CA_________) and then be followed by a random combination of 4 letters & numbers (we’ll generate the numbers, you specify the prefix if you’d like one). So, a typical coin number example would be: CA62h8 or CA124j.

We can send these codes with corresponding activation codes in a txt file or excel file, whichever works best for you.

If you wish to use the geocaching.com logo, you would have to include the URL beneath the logo (like on the usageocoins) but you are not required to use the logo if you so desire.

The only required text for trackable (on geocaching.com) coins would be: “Trackable on Geocaching.com”

Groundspeak will need to approve the final design prior to production in order to make sure that we are comfortable with the coin design (this is a family friendly site, as you know).

The cost per tracking number is US$1.50 and can be paid via paypal or credit card. There will be a 1,500 number minimum purchase required.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

I’ll do the math: $2,250.00 (minimum) just to have them trackable through gc.com, and that doesn’t include the cost of the coin.

    That’s weird…

I read the article this morning, then when I went to look at it later, it wanted me to sign up (which I didn’t). Weird.

I’m checking with TPTB at gc.com to see if we could make them trackable. When I find out info, I will post it here.

Umm… you could go high tech with the Transreflective display, or you could go low-tech and get the simple LCD display, like in a Palm III or Palm V. Great deals to be had on E-bay.

    How about here: Vacation Caches

The territory in which a geocacher is able to maintain caches responsibly will vary from one person to the next. An active geocacher who regularly visits areas hundreds of miles apart can demonstrate their ability to maintain a cache 100 miles from home. A geocacher whose previous finds and hides are all within 25 miles of their home would likely not see their cache listed if placed 250 miles away from their home.

    Edited for UBB Code Error.

It looks like we have 20 teams signed up to get a Jeep at the “Jeepers Creepers – Get A White Jeep” event this Saturday. Anybody wanting to just come out and say “Hi” is more than welcome, but I cannot garuntee you a Jeep. (You will get a smiley out of it though)

If by 11AM some teams don’t make it, their Jeeps will be given away to others. So, if you want to roll the dice and take a chance, you might still get one. I will have a “Waiting List” for teams not already signed up if there are no-shows.

So, if I’m understanding things correctly, the “hold up” is currently you, since you need to create the listing.

    I don’t think this is quite right….

The info on this from the Groundspeak folks has been sketchy at best. Maybe I can shed a little light on the situation….

I THINK this is how it works…..
You submit a cache to http://www.earthcache.org

The folks there then submit it as a virtual cache on your behalf. (I’ve seen these show up in the queue, and they are always submitted by the same person who is located many hundreds of miles away from here).

Then Nate at groundspeak “converts” the cache into an earthcache. I believe at that time, the ownership is changed back to the original submitter.

    Clear as mud?

I count 19 as of now. I’m guessing by tomorrow morning we will have 20.

I suspected that no matter HOW the Jeeps were distributed, not everybody would be happy, and for that I am sorry.

I know that Madison is getting a bunch, and Eau Claire is getting a bunch too. If you E-mail me, I can forward your request on to the people who are handing them out in those areas.

Also, keep in mind that these Jeeps do NOT belong to the people who are picking them up. The Jeeps that are handed out should be put in caches, so more people can find them.

in reply to: Jeep Wrangler Travel Bugs #1738099

I am trying to spread them out around the state. I’m having some faithful volunteers starting some in / near the following cities: Manitowoc, Appleton, Madison, Eau Claire, Eagle River, Superior. I’m also trying to represent where the concentrations of the geocachers are with how I spread them out. So, it looks like for LaCrosse, Madison or Eau Claire are going to be the closest.

in reply to: Jeep Wrangler Travel Bugs #1738097

What…. You don’t want to come out and just chat? We’ll be discussing geocaching….

Anyway…..The way I figure it, the first 20 teams to post a “Will Attend” note will have Jeeps reserved for them.

At 11:00, if teams with reserved Jeeps haven’t shown up, the Jeeps will be given away to teams that do show up but don’t have one of the 20 reserved. I’ll probably have a waiting list set up for any teams that show up without a Jeep reserved.

    Here’s the plan…..

I am sending some Jeeps out for others to distribute in all parts of the state EXCEPT the SE corner.

For that I am going to be holding a Jeep Giveaway event. It is tentatively scheduled for Saturday June 18th, from 10 to 11 AM, somewhere in the West Allis / New Berlin area (I haven’t decided quite yet).

When I get the event page put together, I will post the link here.

I am also looking for a cacher in the Wausau area to distribute a few Jeeps in Central Wisconsin. Please contact me at: wga2-admin at wi-geocaching dot com.
