Here are my questions for the candidates:
1. What got you into caching and how long have you been doing it?
I saw a small article in “Wisconsin Trails” magazine and loved the idea of enhancing my hiking with finding Tupperware int he woods. I have been doing so since 2004
@sweetlife wrote:
2. What area of the state are you from?
I was from the NorthEastern part, but have been in the SouthEastern part for about 1.5 yrs.
@sweetlife wrote:
3. How much of the state have you geocached in that is away from your home area? ?? of 72 counties
I think I have dome about 30 counties…might be more though. 🙂
@sweetlife wrote:
4. how far from home are you willing to travel for events and how far in the past have you traveled to go to an event?
I have gone to Illinois on a whim for a mid week event. I have been to the Midwest GeoBash and went to GeoWoodstock back in 2006. When I travel, I try to get to events the locals might be having. I have over 30 states now also.

5. Are you members of any other geocaching association: Michigan’s MiGO, Minnesota Geocachers, GONIL, Big bob’s bulletin board, etc.
I am involved with the Maine GC Assoc as well as one of the Florida Assoc. Otherwise, I am a bit more involved with EarthCaching and keep contact with GeoAware, the EC approver.
What they did well:
As always, the events were great!! Also, we kept up on some of the issues we had been working on and got them resolved or got the answer we hoped for.
What they didn’t do well:
The WGA needs to utilize its resources better, i.e. $$$, members, BOD. The WGA just needs to find the best way to do so.

Continuing with the questions the canidates would have asked the other canidates comes this question from GR8Eyes:
How about…. what strategies or methods do you incorporate into your problem solving/decision making (I don’t mean math problems ) when asked to look at a situation?
Again I ask that all canidates (including GR8Eyes) answer the question:
Thanks
I look at the situation from all sides. I an a fence sitter by nature and like to look at all the pros and cons before doing research and making decisions
I also like to use past experience that I have had or of others who may have been in the same situation.
The internet is my friend. I enjoy doing research, looking for answers, concepts or other ideas, crazy as they may seem. I do think outside of the box. Not all crazy ideas out out of reach. They can be modified!!
I use people of all types and backgrounds as resource people. They may not have ever gone caching but know how to use a GPS. Maybe they know some kewl little thing we never thought of.
Geocaching achievements:
– Current member of the WGA BOD
– Temp cache placement for WGA events
– Assisting with the creation of WGA event booklets & booklet assembly
– Supporter of the advancement of the WGA website, by presenting to the board and voting for the creation of forums such as EarthCaching, Benchmarking & Puzzle Caches– Providing GeoCaching Education classes for Co parks & Nature centers
– Active participant in the sport of Geocaching including: Placing and maintaining caches & events of my own & maintaining caches owned by others.– I own over 40 caches and have hosted several Events of my own, including a weekend camp out up North.
UPCOMING:
I have another class/presentation coming in March 7th in Milwaukee.
I am hosting and event on Feb 7th!!! I’d invite you all, but it is in Honolulu, Hawaii!!! LOL Well…. what the heck!! Come on along!!!
I believe in getting all the required info needed for that cache, such as the EarthCaches require and AuntieNae mentioned. If you don’t have the info, trust me…owners do watch.
So……if you can play the game and play it by the rules, do so!! If you can’t play by the rules and try to cheat your way to higher numbers, you are not fooling anyone but yourself.
Trust me on this one…cachers DO watch what other cachers do!! What has come up in conversation are such things as some cachers changing “DNF’s” to “Finds” after a cache is archived.
Should I care?? Personally….NO!! Let them do what they want. It just looks bad to the Newbies coming into the sport.
Wow… I’m a big dreamer, so this could be fun! LOL
First, I think in would love to have a committee, people dedicated to traveling around the state (or further), when needed with all the equipment and materials needed for an awesome presentation on the sport. Like mentioned by others, the GPS units would be of great value, having Magellan, Garmin and maybe another popular brand, so people can see the differences, etc.
Second…I would love to see a Caching adventure sponsored by the WGA. Maybe a Cruise or a trip over seas. Australia sounds great this time of year!!
Third….hmmm I know there are other businesses like this, but if the WGA had the ability to create their own Team Building program, using Geocaching in combination with other outdoor sports, like white water rafting or weekend long hike and camping.
I think it had to be a good 6 months, but I can’t remember that far back. LOL What brought me back was the forums and having the ability to meet new people, find out more about caching and seeking help with my GPS (Trudy & the Beast came to my rescue on that one)
It has become, what I like to refer to as “HOME” I know a lot of people here and can keep in pretty good contact with many of them via the WGA and events. I like meeting the Newbies here, offering them help if/when I can, but with so many great people here, many get to the Newbies before I can. It’s a great place to hang out, see what cachers are up to and learn new stuff everyday!!
When the computer is up and running properly, I visit quite often!!
Thanks for the great question!!
I usually let my GPS sit at the cache location for 5+ min as I handwrite odds and ends or get the cache container ready. I then walk away, pull the coords to my “Go To” and see how far off it is ready. If the cache is close by, I may come back on a clearer or more cloudy day to check. I try to take as much time as needed to get the best coords!!
My question is simple:
“So….WHY do you want to be part of the WGA BOD?”
As mentioned by AuntieNae, the availability of education through Geocaching 101 classes offered by fellow cachers or classes offered by Parks and Recs are the most beneficial for Newbies.
Several of us have held GC 101 classes or have helped out State, Co and local Parks & Recs Depts with the classes they would like to hold, one of which I will be doing in March for a Milw. Co. Park.
Getting the word out there is beneficial also. The WGA welcomes any advertisement of classes either via calendar for official GC events or within the forums. The best the WGA can do is encourage current cachers to lead newbies to the WGA site and have newbies utilize the site, ask questions and/or for help to lead them in the right direction.
Currently the WGA has HTMLs that people can place on their Cache pages, to help lead cachers in the right direction. We also have a Community Education Committee, which is a forum situated in the Leadership Forums. Cachers who are interested in helping out with Community Ed, can ask to join that committee. We frequently get requests from organizations looking for help with clases that the communitee can attend.
Thanks for the question!!

A 3 part question for all of the candidates:
1. Candidates, do you like our new Logo?
2. If so, please state why. If not-so-much please also state why.
3. Were you in favor of changing the group’s logo?
Yes I like it. I had some ideas myself, but I have a problem with the connection from creative mind to talented hand and I don’t own one of those fancy programs to help. 🙂
Why I like it: It has a more mature look to it. It has a bit more 3 dimensional appearance and more modern look.
Yes I was in favor of the change, but it was not like a life or death issue. Change is good !! 🙂
Everyone here has very good points which I must agree with.
As zuma has stated, it doesn’t look as if MWGB will come, but one never knows what the future will hold. The mid-west doesn’t consist of only 3 states and as cachers get may become bored with the same old…same old, then maybe it can be persuaded to have the event here in WI. I never like to say NEVER.
Geowoodstock is a whole other animal. Bidding gets put in a year ahead of time or more. When I to the event a couple years ago, I had heard that one state/city had been putting in a bid/plea for several years. They look at a lot, including accommodations, # of caches in the area and honestly, who knows what else.
WI needs to put its mark on the map with its own event, i.e. The West Bend CashBash. One thing I DO know is that if the WGA was to create another Mega event of some type, it needs to really have its ducks in a row. Though I was unable to attend the West Bend event, due to work, I heard it went excellent!!
My experience at the Texas GeoWoodstock was shear frustration. It was very poorly run, having the event at a park that charged person in the vehicle and not per vehicle, they held a pre-event the night before at the same place so we got double charged, registration people we late as well as the TB drop off persons. Lets just say…they not only didn’t have their ducks in a row… they forgot the ducks altogether!!
So my answer….the WGA holds great events on its own and assists with helping others. In due time, I do see a mega event held by or with the WGA.
I’ll answer soon!!
I just moved and don’t have internet service up and running just yet. I’m using internet out of a Starbucks and have limited time/use. Will be up and running soon!!!
Once you have your GPS figured out, you’ll have to give a lesson. I Believe most cachers use a Garmin of some type or a Magellan, as I do and a few Lowrances here and there. Hope it works well for you and welcome to the club of Caching Nuts!!
