No more Mr. Nice Guy…4 of the 5 people who logged my Iowa EC have not met the very simple requirements : wrong answers…photos not matching requirements…I’m frankly disappointed. I wont be placing another EC in Iowa. I have given the last two finders a two month deadline to get the required photos uploaded…from here out there will be a lot less nonsense on that one allowed. ๐ฟ
Digital Dan and I did this one. We have not logged on it yet. I had to get my pics downloaded first. How on earth can someone screw it up???
What we do before going out hunting EC’s is make up a spread sheet including columns for:
-
The Name, D/T, and coords
Special instructions like parking coords, times or fees,
Tools needed to get required info
Requirements (questions asked)
Space for answers to the questionsWe carried these sheets thru all 61 finds in Indiana. It was a life saver. Of course we always have our Palms with the cache page info too. We also have an Earthcaching Kit we put together. Take that with us wherever we go ๐
Digital Dan and I have had this discussion also. My hope is to get people to understand that it’s about getting others to see interesting and unusual things – fossils, meteor hits, geological oddities, and some ancient history, etc. Things that one might not ordinarily come across or have knowledge of. So far, the ones I have done in WI have brought me to some familiar things that I have seen, BUT they have interesting backgrounds, so thats way kewl!!
I did 9 EC’s this weekend. Only one in Illinois I was rather frustrated with, but will leave it at that. Otherwise, of the ones we found in Iowa took us to some incredible places.

I moved this topic from the “Off Topic” to “Help” so that you may get more answers to your question. ๐
Hope this helps!!
FuYa gotta do what ya gotta do! Hate to say it, but there are people out there who don’t even go to Earthcaches or even regular caches and falsely take a Smiley.
A rule I follow when placing an EC is make sure there is at least one requirement they can’t just look up on the internet AND make `em bring the camera.
Personally, I don’t know what people get out of logging falsely.
Just a update:
I was chatting back and forth with geoaware and asked how the process was going and if he was still doing everything on his own. Here was his response.
“I now have a team of two working on Earthcaches…me and Anny. Anny is just fantastic and is keeping on top of the approvals and I deal with
the crazys, politics and problems (and Earthcache Masters)…so at the
moment we are doing great.”So, with 2 people the approval should go smooth. As for the EC approver to GC.com….things should go smooth enough. As long the GC.com website doesn’t have issues!! As for WI Approvers, they will still oversee any issues with EC’s in SNA that were not approved of properly.

Thanks for the link Anne! I cut and pasted one into all of my existing cache pages and it looks great. I hope it helps others become aware of the WGA. Thanks again ๐
RP.. did it shift all your text or did it stay in place for you??
I try to post that little WGA sign on my new caches. How to do that, can be found “HERE” or click on the WGA menu to the left, under Wiki.
The only thing I found frustrating is that when I put it into existing cache pages, it shifts all the test to a left justification. I am not sure if including it as a comment to the approver, on a new cache submission, to put it in “such & such” a place on your cache page, if the approver can change the page setup so things don’t shift. Maybe they can fix that issue on existing cache pages too……I just never asked ๐ณ
Yup…What Mr Greenthumbs said…. ๐ That was going to be my suggestion too. I know that is why Digital Dan went elsewhere, for the same reason of being rather pricey. The fish places get ya good.. even walmart. We picked up ther thermometer at a fish place.

You may want to integrate some of Passing Wind’s information as well. He posted a very nice thread on the same subject in this section.
I will do that for sure. The basics are up there and as I hunt and peck thru posts, I’ll add items to the sticky!!

That photo would satisfy the requirements of a locationless Terracache I looked at the other day.
Hmm I’ll have to head over there and log it.. Thanks!! ๐ Do I dare ask under WHAT category?? LOL

…just leave out the personal achievements (leaving the most active Earthcachers as contact references would be OK though)….
EDIT…I see you already did this.
Nice addition and well written.I agree……and….DONE ๐

We’re gold earthcache masters, one state away from Platinum, and have 4 of our own (a fifth in the works) and 34 finds. So I think we have a little learnin’, too. Great explanation, Anne, you should make it into a sticky!
Congrats on the Gold level and for getting some new EC’s out.
As for the sticky….hmmm Good idea!! Maybe a Earthcache Newbie Sticky thingy. thanks for the idea!
No such thing as a dumb question!! ๐
An Earthcache is like a Virtual Cache. An EarthCache site is a great way to learn more about our wonderful world. It can take you to many places that you would not normally visit, and teach you about why those places are special or unique. These are designed to be educational and created to have you learn something while there.
Earthcaches are created in conjunction with GC.com, thru the Geology Society, via http://www.earthcache.org, where you can get a bunch more info which will tell you all you need to know about Earthcaches, a listing of where they all are and how to submit your very own.OR you can ask your local Earthcache Master to help. ๐
Utilizing GC.com, you hunt these just as you would a virtual, but remember to read thru the cache page to see what your requirements are for logging, you may need items to get those requirements, such as a the following:
-
Camera – to take your pic there
Measuring tape
Container of known size and timing device to measure gallons/minute
A pH testing kit
Hygrometer
ThermometerWe learned the hard way, in the beginning, and went without reading ahead, only to NOT be able to fullfil the requirements. We actually have an Earthcaching Kit we made up. All contained within our Gallon jug.
The other kewl thing we Earthcachers like, is the Earthcache Masters program. You can find more info on that at http://www.earthcaching.com There are requirements for each level. Once you fulfill those requirements for a level, submit them on the site above and they will send receive a pin for that level (and a sticker, now, I think). Here’s what you can do for that:
Bronze Earthcache Master
Visit and log three (3) or more Earthcaches in two (2) or more states/countries.Silver Earthcache Master
Visit and log six (6) or more Earthcaches in three (3) or more states/countries and have developed one (1) or more Earthcaches.Gold Earthcache Master
Visit and log twelve (12) or more Earthcaches in four (4) or more states/countries and have developed two (2) or more Earthcaches.Platinum Earthcache Master
Visit and log twenty (20) or more Earthcaches in five (5) or more states/countries and have developed three (3) or more Earthcaches.LostBy7 is a Platimun Earthcache Master! I lost track of his #’s LOL
AuntieNae has 10 created and 34 Finds
TheTapps has 7 created and 23 finds a bunch out and not sure of t heir finds
zuma! has 3 created and 27 finds
I have 109 Earthcache Finds but only 2 out (one of which needs to be reinstated)There are many others whom are participating in the Program, whom I don’t know off hand.
Hope this helps shed a little lite on things. Visit the site!! Enjoy Earthcaching……it’s addicting!!
