Well, it was worth a try.
Which grants me…… First To Post!
And then this would be fifteen.
This is the fourteenth post, Right?
As someone born and raised in Colorado, I find you all referring to this bump as a “mountain” quite insulting to my beloved mountains. 😛
That being said, I’ve gotten fat and lazy with all the beer and sausage eating that one must do in this state, so I could see where climbing that HILL would seem like a mountain…

And Richard Dreyfus would have gotten a ticket for climbing up there to get a closer look.
People climb Devil’s Tower all the time. I’ve been to the top three times. It was less than an hour drive from my Uncle’s Ranch back in my climbing days.
one thing I LOVE about this hobby, is that there are 1/1/ lamp post caches for when I want a quick easy stop on a road trip or lunch break, or I can plan a whole weekend for a couple on an island that it takes two ferry boats to reach… (Shameless plug: Everyone come to Rock Island Getaway VI!)
I like having the variety, and it’s ALWAYS fun to take a first timer to a lamp post cache to see that first A-HA! moment when they learn that camo can be something other than green duct tape.

I find the DNR’s advice on bears suspect at best, as at no point does it cover pick-a-nick baskets…

Solar array puts out a steady 4.8 volts under this 13 watt CP bulb. Exactly enough to charge a Phillips mp3 player ,or an LG chocolate touch phone. (MY first two test subjects) Now to test it in full sun and shade outside, before I get it in a finished state!
Total cost;
$9.95 for the four lights on sale from tru-value stores this week.
Wire scrapped from the lights after I gutted the panels.
USB female interface I scavanged from some old computer parts. My droid came in handy when I didn’t have a pocket query loaded for an area last weekend… but I would go on a pre-meditated caching trip without my Colorado.
A phone is a good back-up, or secondary tool, but I don’t think the accuracy, or durability holds up for full time caching.
Glad you figured out how to make it work for you though!
I was thinking about keeping a couple for camping. They are pretty light weight, and you could just stick them in the ground next to your tent and let them do their thing. nice “night lite” for the kids, or an easy way to find your tent when that last cache took you longer than you thought and you get back to camp after dark.
So, I have six solar lights pulled apart, and I am soldering them up right now. I measured the output with my meter, and I am seeing about 2-3 per panel, so if I hook them up in pairs, then link those three pairs together, I should get an output around 5-6V going into the USB….
As a bonus, the lights came with some 600maH batteries. Not as much juice as my 2700maH Maha’s, but still, free rechargables is always a bonus!
I’m not saying I have a bunch of solar lights torn apart in my hose right now or anything….
