I have attended 3 CITO’s, helped my daughter host her first WGA CITO last year, and am planning on attending at least 3 this year.

    Another very good question!

As Wisconsin State Advocate for Leave No Trace, the best thing I can bring to the table for future WGA Events is outdoor ethics education. Rather if its simply handing out geocaching hang tags or manning an info table like I do for the West Bend event, or putting on an awareness session, I feel I can be a huge asset for events that WGA Sponsors by helping us reach or goals that is in our bylaws on promoting CITO’s and Leave No Trace.

    Good question!

Since I am biased on outdoor ethics with my activities with Leave No Trace, I feel education should be a top priority. I feel that we should offer some sort of outdoor ethic education at various events, esp at geo101’s, CITO’s, and the Spring Campout. Outdoor ethics education can be threefold: 1. It will aid to appreciation for preserving our lands that we cache on, 2. it can help prevent future negative impacts that we cause, and 3. It can better our impressions that the public have on us.

Geocaching is a hobby that has exploded these past 5 years and is continuing to expand. Each year, our membership grows, the amount of new caches grows, and the impacts that we cause grows as well. I know most cachers on WGA is conservation minded on how we cache, but we all, including myself, can improve. Also, reaching out to new cachers and educating them on outdoor ethics can and will go a long way!

Even though I agree that you should know some of these answers before you hid your first cache, I will try to answer them anyways…..

    1. Your new hide….. I hope it is hidden in a place that will not lead to unnessary outdoor impacts like trampling on fragile plants, etc…

    2. Changing cache names….. I think not

    3. Use the new way, much easier and it will walk you through almost everything. For a new cache hider, I recommend NOT using the old system.

    4. Request release date? Yes, BUT you need to request it in the note to reviewer before you hit the magic submit button.

    5. Cache maintance? As often as needed. If you notice a string of DNF’s, then it would be a good idea to check on it. If someone posts a Needs Maintance log on your cache, then you definately should check on it or it maybe temp disabled.

    6. How long should you wait to release it? Up to you! If you are very anxious for cachers to find it right away, then release it sooner. If you want to make it harder, then wait till after a snow storm that covers your tracks to release it.

I will echo Mister Greenthumb….. you should have went to some events first, asked fellow cachers these questions, and brainstorm on the answers.

    Hope this helps! 🙂

    RSplash,

I am glad you asked! As stated above in our WGA’s Mission statement, one of the goals is to promote CITO and Leave No Trace Programs within our state. I feel that education at various events like CITO’s, GEO101 courses, and WGA Campouts and pic nics would be a great avenue to pursue. I feel that with my direct contact with Leave No Trace, I can be a huge asset in this. With that said, my main goal would be to help aid in the improvement of education in regards with Leave No Trace. I would also help bring in another partner in outdoor ethics education, and that is Tread Lightly. For those who do not know what Tread Lightly is, they are the same as LNT except that they deal directly with mechanize vechicles, like snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, and boats. Geocaching as a hobby I truly enjoy, and we have the power to either promote a positive or negative impression on what we do. Through education on outdoor ethics, the impression we can have on our general population will be a good one.

Thanks RSplah for that awesome question!

    Hrmm…does he cache? 😈

The reality is he may cache then again, the reality is he may not cache 😆

Needs Maintenance was type 12 and is now type 45. Temp Disable was type 7 and is now type 22. Will Attend was 5 and is now 9. Webcam used to be 9 and is now 11. There really doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to how they moved things around.

This all sounds Greek to me.
