I just wanted to post a quick update. I believe my mother did get it back from the person who took it. They still think they were right in taking it though.
So odd.
On the bright side, ours was spotted for the first time while traveling to Omaha this weekend on I80 buy a new cacher as well.

I have decals on my X, and the physical TB hanging from the rear-view. It’s been discovered a bunch of times and no one’s tried to take the decals. π
But I’ve never seen the magnetic ones, but I’d like to know where to get one. Though I’d use it prolly like it’s not intended. I like the idea of placing it on my truck and having someone take it like a TB to put on their own vehicle. This may start confusing this whole situation, but I still like the idea. Maybe I can get one made, or alter one so it reads “Please take me, I’m a TB, the tag I mean, NOT my truck!” π
You can order it from the link in my original post directly from Groundspeak. I was looking at options to buy a regular travel bug and ‘transfer’ the ID # to my own application (sheet of magnet or adhesive vinyl) at some point.
I also was fully prepared to just have them stolen randomly. Stuff like that happens. But not from a cacher who logs it and then fails to see reasoning to give it back… π lol

The rules for TBs is to honor the mission….
they need to be reminded that the TB is property of the owner and they need to respect that.
Yeah, I know they are knew to the activity. I don’t want to have their experiences discouraged but I just can’t understand their thinking, even after questioned by the owner of it. What is their gain? They still get the ‘point’ for logging it… π

Go with the decals. They’re harder to remove π
Oh and to stay on topic, I’d never remove something from another person’s vehicle. It’s stealing in my opinion.
That’s my feelings on it. It’s like any other magnet on a vehicle.
I mean people have tattoos of TB’s w/ the ID #, do they get kidnapped? π

The only magnetic vehicle TBs I’ve seen are usually only put on the car while at events.
It would be a good idea to make it clear in the description that the TB is for discovery only. That won’t help when someone just plain takes it, but at least they will discover their error and might be inclined to return it.
You might want to send a friendly email to the new cacher and explain the situation and see if you can get it back.
We’re using them for the chance encounter while out and about.
What I did find out is my mother knows the person who ‘found it’ and they talked today. They’re new to caching and kept saying that the rules for TB’s are to keep the moving a long and called someone who they know who caches a lot who said ‘they would have done the same thing’. From what I gathered they did not seem willing to give it back. I sent some examples of other TB’s like this as well as some threads from groundspeak discussing the purpose of them for my mom to present to them.
I can’t understand why someone wouldn’t be willing to give it back when you ask them.
Pretty frustrated that this gift is turning into something else.

I just bought a Kayak specifically for Geocaching. I did swim to cram island, GCVYKT last weekend, but I was wondering ( besides OASIS) is there any other cool Island Caches within 150 miles of Appleton?
Our cache up by Rhinelander requires a kayak or boat of some type for the first waypoint π It’s not listed in the Island bookmarks posted in the thread but it starts on an island so I thought share it.

I would personally got with something from Verizon, they have the most 3G coverage in the state. If your two computers are laptops and have WiFi, I would go with Verizon’s MiFi http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=products_mifi . Its portable so you can take it anywhere you go.
I’d definitely agree with this. We use 2 MiFi’s at work for travelers and I have one at my inlaws. It works great, however you’ll be disappointed if you’re not in 3G coverage as it’ll still connect at 1xRTT which is about twice the speed of dialup (better than nothing!).
I believe VZW has a 30 day window when you can return it and cancel your contract if you want to try it out. The MiFi can have up to 5 computers connected inherently and provides a basic WiFi AP w/ NAT.
Saw the line up this morning, sent the link to my wife and tonight they all appear to be archived π
I should have taken a screenshot.
Just a FYI, our cache has this size container at its final location. It’s been lonely and I’m sure would like a visit π

Jeremy Irish: RT @rockhawk Full power restored at Fisher Plaza but data centers still not allowing servers until rooms are cooled <2-4 hours #fisherfire
Latest news I’ve seen on twitter:
langenu: Geocaching.com down all day thanks to #fisherfire rumors suggest it will be up around 4am eastern.

I was just wondering does the WGA website have an off site back up??? If not, perhaps would be something to seriously consider.
According to the CEO, they cannot afford 2 datacenters. So, there is no backup. π― We have 52 active caches and never thought about maintaining paper backups. Ouch…
You don’t need multiple data centers for backups. They could just be backing it up to disk/tape or another server maybe at an employees home. π
The biggest cost would be to have multiple active/active sites so there would hardly be any downtime noticed by customers. Remote live synchronization isn’t cheap but it’s definitely doable. Knowing the pricing I have seen I really can’t see how they can’t afford to do it. They just need someone to research data centers and transit providers to get the best rates. π I’m sure my current employer would cut them a good deal π

But just think…..what if it ALL GONE! Everything…..gone……….
It’d make me very sad that at this point they didn’t have an off site backup. π
Crazy!
We finally had a chance to go out Geocaching since we had our son in about 2 years today and I couldn’t reach geocaching.com from my blackberry. Good thing I did a pocket query earlier in the week so we manually entered the data in and were still able to get our son his First Find π
I didn’t think about their servers being located in this data center when I heard about it until tonight and then saw it on the list of affected sites.
Tis good to be out caching again in either case.
