There are many sites available to do this from, and results will vary as servers are located in different locations around the country.
For those who use Charter internet I recently was given info on their speed test location for so business troubleshooting: http://speedtest.wi.charter.com and http://speedtest.mn.charter.com
Then there is always http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
I put a speed test page on my works webserver as we’re an ISP also that I like to use because I know what our transit is and such.
Then there is always iperf testing which will test raw tcp/ip traffic to and from a server running iperf. I suppose I’m getting to geeky now. Time for bed 😉
Dick’s Sporting had a eTrex for $99 also, it’s the yellow one. The Gander Mountain is a Refurbished eTrex Legend w/ 1 year warranty.

Interesting story. I had to search the site to find out where this took place. Finally found a clue that it’s in Ohio.
As did I. I suppose I should have stated where it was located in my original post, sorry for the extra work 😉
We use to take pictures of each find and the location but never posted them to geocaching.com. We’ve since started to take pictures of the difficult finds or the interesting containers etc. Some of the caches we’ve found and taken pictures of are on our website (which is pretty out of date). So I guess people could track down images for caches we’ve been to if they really wanted to… We just like to have an image history on our personal pages for friends and family to see.
I’ve alway assumed that would be ok and assumed posting pictures to cache pages would be ‘giving away’ the location for thos who are searching.

So we should expect in the not too distant future, a form to fill out and send it to land managers for every public land in order to place a cache? Hard enough finding out who the few managers are for State land. Can’t imagine how difficult it will be to find who the land manager is for every piece of public land……..
You sound like you’re looking for a reason to stop geocaching… 😉
Would you rather have a blanket Ban on Geocaching or have at least the option of Notifying someone that you want to place a cache?
As for how hard it is to find land manager info, I’m sure someone will come up with a nifty database with the info in one location. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is someone working on it currently.

If having a Policy with the DNR is Good for caches on state land, then it should also be Good to have a Policy with the management of every other public property. Right? All the arguments for a DNR Policy would apply to those as well it would seem to me. Why would the managers of County and City Parks across the state feel any different about the lands they manage. Shouldn’t we proactively seek a Policy from them as well? In fact, we have more to loose from being banded from like Milwaukee County Parks & City Parks than we do from State Land, since there are a lot more caches on County & City land than on State Land.
The City of Madison did infact ban geocaches because of a few issues they had with it. Some in the WGA worked with the Cityof Madison to have that decision reversed. Now to place a cache in a Madison park you submit the cache information to one of the WGA members for them to Approve it for the City.

I was doing Covert Cache (GC3798) earlier today, and my coworker asked the bartender for the cache (“cash”).
… The bartender thought he was being robbed for a second.
I think using “geocache” is safer when having to ask….
I’m slapping myself for not checking to see if a cache would be at this site when we visited it a few months ago for the first time… Oh well, guess it will be time for another mission soon 😉

Out of curiosity, why did they deny the cache? Geocaching IS allowed unless there are special circumstances for a particular spot, ie dangerous or fragile area.
Does that mean a manager can’t say No to a cache just because they dislike the idea of Geocaching or something that sort? Or should I say that they aren’t suppose to deny caches unless it is a problem with a specific area as you stated?
Your paranoid 😉
I’m seriously going to be hiding ours soon. Circumstances haven’t allowed me to do so yet 🙁 I was hoping for this coming weekend but I’m not sure if that will happen. I’ll have to see how I’m feeling by the weekend.
Trust me, I’ve been wanting to hide it ASAP. It’s been sitting on our kitchen counter since we got it so we wouldn’t forget about it. And no, you can’t come find where our house is to claim FTF 😉
Although that would make my hiding job easier…. 😉
Ahhh yes, now I remember why I stopped reading GC.com forums… 😉
I think everyone is appreciating everything those cachers in the area are doing to make amends and educate the locals.
I agree … it’s seems a bit scam-ish, except that everythings out in the open … maybe the scam comes when there’s not actually anything to find, or they make it basically next to impossible to be found.

Alright, I give up. Where exactly on the website do they post the entry fee? I gotta say that this smells of a scam, but even if it is legitimate, the payout is pretty pathetic. Note that if 999 people enter, they take in $99,900 and only payout $10000. Kinda makes the state lottery look like a good bet. I kinda doubt they will get 100 people entering anyway.
It says the entry fee on the first page Forth bullet on the left:
Registration price: $100
It does state how much, it’s $100 to play.
Also the grand prize would only hit $100,000 if 10,000 people sign up. If their minimum, 100 players signs up, the max prize is $5,000 and only one prize is handed out.
Very interesting. It’s looks to be a pretty good time commitment is needed to do it all.
Not sure if we’ll participate yet, but it’s quite possible. 🙂
