I have had great success using a Garmin amplified antenna with my GPS 5 in the canyons and mountains of Sequioa National Forest.

I just happen to own both a Magellan Platinum and Garmin GPS V, and topo map software for each. My experience is that the Garmin topo is more detailed and complete of the two.
