DCexplorer- I emailed you a couple of days ago and never heard back…. did you not receive?

I think they go south for the winter. Try the people that Folk Trakers mentioned and see if you learn anything before the weekend. If not, let me know and I will go out there and see if I can re-find it.

I had the pleasure of meeting Geogil and Dairy on the trails some time ago. I don’t know which I enjoyed more, as they were both delightful characters. My deepest condolences to Geogil.

    RIP Dairy!

It is your cache page- you can do whatever you want as far as logging on it is concerned. You could allow everyone to log their finds on it if you really wanted to.

Chances are that sooner or later some out-of staters will raise an issue with this just as they have with the WGA event pages. If you don’t mind getting razzed that wouldn’t matter either. I wonder how many e-mails GrouseTales has gotten protesting the WGA policy? A good number, I bet.

Sooner or later if this type of “false” log were to become widely known, I would be willing to bet that Groundspeak will take action to prevent it. As we have seen, the majority of geocachers around the rest of the world find the practice of logging temp caches inappropriate.

And my last question for now is are any of the sites at rock island grass covered? Thanks, Tracy

Geocaching events are open to anyone who wishes to participate.
Rock Island is a special event in that camping on an island out on Lake Michigan is very unique to most. The historical aspects of the location add nicely to the adventure of hiking and geocaching. The campsites are comparable to the sites at other state parks- perhaps even nicer, seeing that there is no motor vehicle use by the public.
A nice article on the island with some good links can be found here

    Dates are June 23-25.

For anyone interested in coming, use care in timing your arrival to that of the ferry schedule. The Washington Island ferry will sometimes fill up quickly, meaning you will have to wait for the next one. Last year I recall one person got stranded on Washington Island on Friday evening. I would have been stranded myself if I had not had my sea kayak to make the crossing to the island. (Weather permitting it’s a great place to kayak too.)

My pics from last year can be seen here

in reply to: Chuck Boxes for Camping #1760760

One thing to consider is what you will REALLY end up doing with the box. For someplace like Rock Island, something light and with good wheels rules. For car camping or group camping, a chuck box is nice.

As a soloist, I tend to think more backpacking style. Dried soup and pasta mixes, GORP, trail mix, & pancakes. I filter my own water from the lake. My “camp bag” is ready to go all year around, and gets “re-freshed” between trips. Lighter is better!

Thanks Brkster, I have sent them info and the request and hope they are willing to help. Would you say there is a suitable spot to land a kayak and camp here?

I don’t know the area you are referring to, thus would need more info.

I would be happy to share to up-front cost. I could PayPal you or if you have a better idea??

The weekend after Father’s Day works great for me. Although I would probably get my own site, I would be happy to pitch in for fees and firewood for the group site.

The group site will make for the ultimate spot for the nightly gathering around the campfire and discussion of beer and Johnny Cash. Now all we need is a guitar player.

The WGA boards do not publish any stats on hides and finds.

It would be interesting to see what Jeremy at Groundspeak would think about developing an option to “opt out” of having one’s stats being available to the members at large.

Consider the time it takes to travel to board meetings, review cache submissions, coordinate functions, work with land managers, and successfully make the majority of Wisconsin geocachers a happy bunch of folks. These people have been donating their own time- and in doing so have done us all a great service.

Time is precious, and in these days most people lead very busy lives. I don’t think becoming a board member is a decision that anyone should take lightly. Some might find it enjoyable and fulfilling, yet it is indeed a responsibility. Additional responsibility is something a lot of people would choose not to go looking for.

Thanks to all the board members who have given to this association- past, present, and future.

I’d love to attend again, but will be at a Symposium in Superior over Father’s Day weekend. If it were on the following weekend, you could count me in!
