    It’s not new….

There are a good number of geocachers who would like to see the sport take a step back in order to maintain a sense of quality vs. quantity. They see the issues that have risen due to the extreme growth rate of the sport and the saturation of caches that came along with it.

It’s a great concept that unfortunately wasn’t adopted where it counts and might have simply came along all too late.

    Absolutely right Tami!

I just thought I’d point it out as I’d assume they logged the event that way on purpose.

It’s great that everyone can choose how they log their events!

I kind of like the idea of what they did in the first place. I can see what caches they did at the event and it didn’t clutter up the event page with multiple logs.

Numbers? We don’t need no stinking numbers!

First make sure your browser is not set to block cookies.

Then, for each browser that you use, you will need to set your preferences setting on this page- http://wi-geocaching.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ubbmisc.cgi?action=setprefs

Firefox does not cause any of the problems mentioned, given the right cookies.

I heard a similar story about the Beast once.

I have yet to try the feature.

It used to be that if you downloaded a PQ of your finds, the archived caches would not be included. Has this been corrected?

I guess I could have mentioned that this is a NEW unit. I took it out of the box to charge the battery and make sure it works, which of course it does.

The entire operation, from the design and planning, to the special WGA store, packaging, and return labels were entirely way beyond expectation.

    Very nicely done folks!!

in reply to: What are you doing with your coins? #1760586

Having had 4 out of 5 regular geocoins disappear within a month of their release, you can bet that I won’t be releasing anymore.

From now on if I get the urge, I’ll just leave a $5 bill in the cache. Much less painful than having expections.

But I don’t recall ever seeing a pocket cache at a WGA event. And that’s why I think it’s unfair to compare the two events in that listing.

“Pocket caches”- I like that term!

I totally agree that it’s not a WGA thing, that is why I called it a poor example.

I don’t care what anyone else logs, as long as no one tries to tell ME what to log. Again, it’s never been an issue, and hopefully never will be.

    No it’s not worth another discussion…. BUT….

How many WI event caches have had temp caches floating around the breakfast/dinner table? Their event looks like a similar thing to me.

It’s a stab with a poor example no doubt, but in some respects it is not so far from what has happened at a few events in WI.

in reply to: 2 questions for the approvers #1740968

Not an answer to the question, but I would suggest taking some time to look around for alternative places to set up caches. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I would much rather visit new locations whenever possible in the hunt for a cache. Visiting the same land 2, 3, 4, and sometimes even more times to hunt newer caches as they pop up takes a great deal of fun out of the adventure.

Cache saturation is great for an event, but overall it has a dulling effect on the sport.

in reply to: New logo? #1760057

    This is a two-fold problem.

It is clear that small percentage of geocachers have made poor decisions in cache placement and maintenance. Compare this to the fishermen who are leaving their bait containers behind or damaging shoreline. Perhaps the hunters who leave their spent shells wherever they happen to land? Any effect geocaching might have on the environment is miniscule in comparison.

This is really all about education, wouldn’t you agree? The majority of people would never purposely do any of these things.

If the governmental agencies spent more of their budgets educating instead of regulating, we would all be much better off.

I think you are going the wrong direction on the issue of litter-

    (inserting tounge in cheek here)
Perhaps new rules should mandate that all cache containers and their contents must be biodegradable. That way if they are not properly maintained, they just harmlessly dissolve and seep into the ground.

I think the bigger problem is that we continue to support the use of plastic containers and materials that will not be consumed by the earth anytime in the next million years.

I challenge you to come up with some proven facts regarding how many geocaches have been forgotten and are now litter. We do a much better job of policing our sport than most.

Mr Paddler, reading your posts makes me wonder if you are not more or less against geocaching in general? I’m pretty much led to believe that you would rather not have us in the forest at all. God forbid we might make a new animal trail or somehow affect the environment in some way.

In the case of the IL and MI DNR rulings- they didn’t ask us to change our containers.

They didn’t ask us for advice on how to bring more geocachers to their parks to perform volunteer work or develop new programs.

What they did do is mandate regulations that have absolutelty no basis!

You did get one thing right- we need to work together with government agencies. If someone does not make sure they understand the truth about geocaching, we will end up getting the proverbial shaft, just as those other places already have.

Don’t worry MB, you are the only one we would ever charge at an event.

in reply to: little army man #1740903

I think we need a little more information. Is the “little army man” a Groundspeak Travel Bug, or is it trackable on an alternative site?

Groundspeak travel bugs are tracked here- http://www.geocaching.com/track/

If it’s not a Groundspeak Travel Bug, then we will need whatever further information you might be able to provide in order to possibly assist you.
