I take the meaning of “available in winter” to be the same as “winter friendly”. It means that I will not have to dig through a bunch of snow to locate the cache.

One cemetary cache I found required information from headstones that did not protrude from the ground. None of the stones around protruded from the ground. At the tme there was 2 feet of snow. It would have been wrong to remove the snow from the area that made up ground zero. This would be “not winter friendly”.

It certainly defies me that anyone would find an ammo can to be a bad thing. Judging by the number that have been muggled in the past few years, it is obvious that most do not share the concern.

Clyde is pretty handy with GSAK. I guess it comes with having designed and written the program from scratch.

He’s written several cool programs that were posted on his website before there was a GSAK.net. He is a retired airline pilot turned programmer. It was apparently just a hobby until GSAK became so popular. Another of the few who are fortunate enough to have gained income through geocaching.

I’ve used several different GPS units and feel that there are are disadvantages to each of them. Here’s a few off the top of my head-

I would happily do without an electronic compass, as it eats battery life and needs to be calibrated all too often. Electronic barometer? Battery eater and not of much use to the average cacher. Color screen? Nice to look at. Makes it a lot easier to tell a road from a river or stream. I much prefer the finer lines used in Gamin’s maps over those used by Magellan. Finer lines allow better detail in what is already a small screen. The new Magellan Explorists use a special battery that recharges inside the unit. (the unit must be plugged in) On the road, I would much rather be able to throw in a new set of batteries.

    I’m sure there’s more- but it’s suppertime.

    Congratulations T&B!!

Judging by the way they chase caches, I have trouble believing either of them is 42 years old.

    To think…. I wasn’t even a gleam in my daddy’s eye yet……….

I’ve used the laptop in my truck and have no probem powering it and my battery charger for the GPSr’s on my inverter. The laptop for me is really just a toy while driving, as I have good maps in my GPSr’s. Really needing to use the laptop, as you found out would not be a good thing.

I agree with picking up an inexpensive PDA on E-bay, but if you would rather, don’t overlook the Palm Factory Outlet at http://store.palm.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=1179667

I use an old 16 MB Handspring (Palm) and have no problem putting over 1000 complete cache pages on it. Even better, if it gets damaged while caching, i’m only out the $30-40 (or less) I could get another one for on E-bay.

This is interesting considering some rest areas have banned geocaching.

Not so sure if the the spam issues are as bad as they have been made out to be M.B. I have posted one of my e-mail addresses in the past and have not received any spam.

Interesting- Ken or Brian, isn’t there at least a name and number in the DNR chain-of-command where we could direct unknowing DNR staff members to seek info?

Switch to the “lowest” detail setting and zoom out to about 30 miles.

    Great work Forefeathers!

Any chance you would be willing to share your ppt with us? Some may make good use of it in their own presentations. I would be willing to host it and provide a link our members could download it from. If you are willing, please do e-mail me.

    Thanks!

Easy way? I have not found one.

I ran a PQ of all my finds and then exported them into Mapsource, which is pretty easy to use in determining where the county lines are in most places.

Great job on both the graphics for the coins and the very professional store set-up!!

It will be fun just to see how many coins sell.

Thanks to pcfrog, Jeremy, and the rest of the crew, for making this a reality!

    Hello, and Welcome!

I’m curious as to the differences in caching in WI vs the other states you have been- anything stick out?

    in reply to: registered #1740814

I too would be willing to pay more for just the PQ’s. Using map software for caching, the PQ’s combined with the map software saves $$$ in gas alone.

Now if they could come out with autorouting that didn’t lead one in silly directions, and I finish that vegetable oil diesel conversion, i’d never go home.
