Before the DNR budget was cut and large personnel changeovers took place, our board members had made great progress in working with the DNR to assemble a geocaching policy that both the WGA and the DNR were very happy with. Unfortunately, when the DNR people got shuffled around, the finalization of the policy was placed on infinite hold.

I would rather have no policy than one that hindered my caching in any way. When the time comes, something will happen. It always does. Whether it is good or bad remains to be seen.

I’m curious as to where you are coming from? The WI DNR has never released a geocaching policy. There are no dues, fees, or licenses required to geocache on WI DNR land.
There are some policies that were put in place while working with the DNR- I.E.- No caches allowed in SNA’s (State Natural Areas). Beyond this, the WGA’s policies are the only STATE rules regarding geocaching that I am aware of.

    YET.

I think the fact that the cache owner has not logged into geocaching.com since last August is reason enough to archive the cache.

This is another example of where some policy would be good. A person finds 1 cache and then goes out and hides his own. After a month or so, he abandons the sport altogether.

I always recommend to others to find at least 20-30 caches before placing one of your own. At least then they will have some kind of a clue of what makes the sport.

I was in the tall grass and brush of SE WI much of the weekend and seen no ticks.

Then again, it could be related to the heavy coating of Deep-Woods Off I maintained to fend off the mosquitos.

    I was wondering about that….

It seem to me that the WGA should be happy to accept some free code from Brew. I know the keepers of the site have a busy enough life without having to re-inventing the wheel.

    How about it guys?

I use GSAK for a lot of things, but I still prefer spinner and easy gps for uploading my waypoints. The waypoint names and symbols spinner makes are easier for me to read on the trails. Long cache names are still tough sometimes, but I can always figure them out.

Spinner can also be modified to make things appear how you want them. There is a little learning curve. Don’t be afraid to ask if you need help.

    Sorry to hear that wzbt03,

With that knowledge, could you tell be how the second waypoint was hidden? I looked until I could no longer feel my limbs.

Been bugging me for weeks and weeks now.

in reply to: Adopting someone else’s abandoned cache? #1739838

Glad to hear the cache owners are still alive.

It’s important that all cache owners register their account at geocaching.com and ensure they have an active e-mail address on Geocaching.com. That way if there is a problem, they can be notified. In addition, you will then receive e-mail notifications every time someone logs your cache.

The great thing about WGA members, is they tend to take care of each others caches. Who wants to hunt down a cache full of water or find a logbook in shambles? Although it is the owners responsibility, I encourage all cachers to carry extra pens, log books, zip-loc bags, etc. so that we can help keep each others caches in good condition. It’s also a good practice to check your own cache every few weeks to make sure it is in good shape and hidden as you intended. When you do maintenance, log it on the cache page so that others can see that the cache is “tended to”. If you have a cache that you can no longer maintain, post the information here on the boards and one of us will likely volunteer to adopt it.

in reply to: Caching Frequency #1747021

I work a regular 40 hour week (+2 hours a day driving back & forth) so most of my caching is on the weekends.

When there were caches closer to home, I would hunt them during the weeknights, but now it’s gotten too far to drive to claim just one ordinary find.
It’s always nice to have one pop up close enough to run out for after work.

Sick days are for caching, aren’t they?

It was such a long drive in this heat that the beer was all gone by the time I got there.

If you could pass some jeeps on to one of the members that will be at the breakfast, I will make sure that the Black River Falls and Eau Claire area gets them.

If I get a few, I will make sure some make it all the way to the Superior area.

I’m headed to north central and northwest WI and will be happy to get some Jeeps on their way.

Brian, will you be at the Mother of all Breakfasts? It will be a great opportunity to distribute some.

in reply to: Caching and History #1746953

I don’t know if they could be considered historicals, but there are a couple of caches that I later went out of my way to research.
“I love the smell of hydraulic fluid in the Morning”, is on the site of the old Chanute Air Force Base in IL. I always enjoy midwest military history.

Another interesting one was JThorson’s now archived “The Bray Road Beast.” Some strange accounts to be found about that one also.

The one I spent the most time on was in the making of one of my own caches, “Bowen Country Club”. Lots of interesting history to be found by researching Jane Adams and Hull House.

The Mother of all Breakfasts is in Kenosha on the 19th, so that day is pretty much tied up. How about the 20th?

EXPERT? LOL. Wizbit’s caches tend to make me feel like a newbie.

Someone needs to tie an anchor on these folks so the rest of us can catch up.

Printing out cache pages, that’s several trees worth.

    Shocked and Amazed! Congratulations!

I found the first waypoint, but gave up at the second. Something about the -20 windchill raised the difficulty even higher.

I’m also due to get back in that area.

The 19th is the Mother of all Breakfasts.
After the 26-27th, I’ll be heading north for awhile.

Hey WIZBIT;; Isn’t Janesville overdue for an event cache?
