Not sure exactly what you are trying to do……..if you want to put cache waypoints on a streets and trips map, I recommend the GSAK, the Geocaching Swiss Army Knife. It does everything EasyGPS does plus WAY more, including that it will output in about every file format you would probably ever want.

Plus if you have a problem, a quick email to the code writer (Clyde) has instant results from a great guy.

Although I didn’t know there was a web forum, I have been a dumpster diver for years. Also a dump muggle.

Amazing the great stuff people throw away. Unfortunately, some businesses have went to padlocking their dumpsters.

The trick is not becoming a collector of junk. There are actually many people making a living doing it! Check out some of the strange stuff selling on E-Bay. Guess where it came from?

Although I have not drawn the line on food, I just have yet to find anything good while I was starving.

I hereby volunteer a donation of 10 cases of bottled water for all enthusiastic geocachers. If you are not enthusiastic, I will loan you an empty bottle, which you can fill in the lake.

    Doesn’t sanitary district= sewage treatment?

in reply to: Anyone know any good online maps? #1739718

My personal favorite internet-based mapping program is USAPhotoMaps. It allows you to save maps section by section from the microsoft Terraserver to your hard drive, both in aerial photo and USGS Quadrangle maps.

It also has functions for downloading and uploading waypoints with your gps or will handle standard gpx files and many other useful functions. The program can be downloaded from the owners website at http://www.jdmcox.com/

Oh, but I don’t recommend it for dial-up customers unless you are working small areas. I have accumulated almost 2 GB of maps on my hard drive, which is less that 1/2 of WI at all zoom levels and both map and aerial views.

in reply to: Rating of Caches #1746359

I use the rating questionaire that is recommended by geocaching.com. It can be found at http://www.clayjar.com/gcrs/ .

I agree that there are a few existing caches that are overated. Can’t think of any that were underated, but when caching I never really look anyway.

The first cache I ever found was a 4/4 and if I had noticed I probably would have never hunted it when I was still so green. Looking back, I think it deserved the rating too.

I hope to cache my way through that area in late June. If you are still pondering the idea then, I’d be happy to find a few with you.

in reply to: Cache of the month? #1746382

It seems the problem is that the cache is actually called “Hello Wisconsin”. It was a COM winner in Oct of 2002.

I would not think it would be eligible again unless the cache had major changes made to it??

in reply to: Dangerous objects in caches #1746342

It was an ammo box, right?

But seriously, even here in WI, there are some adults that would be scared to place their hand on a shotgun shell or bullet.

The last thing we need while trying to grow our sport is an unknowing geocacher coming across something like this and calling the police.

If you don’t feel comfortable about something you see in a cache & choose not to remove it, please post the information here or get in touch with one of us so that we can resolve the issue.

Before you place an object in a cache, think about the children that may be playing in those same woods. One bad incident could make geocaching looked upon in a negative way.

I agree- and Cheesehead Trivia would undoubtedly be in the front running.

The difference I wish to point out is that unlike Cheesehead Trivia, which is much like a big multi-cache, many of the great series of caches do NOT end with a final cache.

These series may not make a good “cache of the month” as many people might only do part of the series, or take months or even longer to do an entire series.

Another example would be a series that has grown over the course of months or longer, like the “Where’s the Dam….Cache” series by Bobcatw98.

In many of these series, no one cache might have made cache of the month, but as a series, I feel a whole seperate contest is in order.
