There are 60 caches within 50 miles of Wausau. With your 4 finds this year, there should be more than enough to get you through the winter.

I will give you extra credit for tackling “3 Bad Ribs”; it is said to be more challenging than most of the caches in WI.

Be careful what you wish for!

Very sorry to hear about this loss to WI-Geocaching and the Handley family. My deepest sympathy to Trudy & the Beast.

I would first ask is the park is closed to hikers/bikers or is it just closed to vehicle traffic? It is common for county parks depts. to consist primarily of summer temp workers, and have little or no staffing during the off season. If the parks are completely inaccessable, I would start by talking to my local alderman or park supervisor and see if there’s a possibility that they change their thinking. Glad to say our parks are all used for x-country skiing, walking/hiking etc. year around.

    Good Luck

You haven’t cached until you’ve been so covered in muck that you have to strip your pants off before you could drive to the next one.

    or

You haven’t cached unless you’ve had to strip your clothes off to access the cache.

Wow, 700 seems like is must me a religious experience or something. I am in awe! Congratulations!

I agree with you fully, although I am careful about logging “no finds”. The problem with logging a “no find” is that it scares off the newbies, who then won’t hunt it, when in fact it could have just been my eyesight. If there is 2 or 3 no-finds, I will usually question the owner only to find that the cache has not been checked on in many months, if they even bother to respond. If the owner verifies in the log that all is well, then I will be more likely to log a “no find”.

in reply to: “Vacation Caches” #1739610

Obviously, my thinking is more on the extreme side. My thinking is that if I am driving up north for a few, and find a major problem with a cache

the coords point into the river and the cache description and hint don’t match the coords & the cache is unfound in a 200′ search area

I would think it a common courtesy that the cache owner be able to fix the problem within a few days. Thus, on my return trip, I can swing by and make the find.

Again, my way of caching may not be as relaxed as others, but I don’t think anyone should have to wait weeks after already driving many miles- for a cache problem to be fixed. I and many others have added logbooks, pens, zip-locks, etc. to keep caches going; I would hope that every cache owner cares as much about the cache as I do.

How many times should a cache owner be allowed to ignore a trashed cache without as much as checking on it or archiving it?. How many no-finds, spread over weeks, should a cache remain unarchived if the cache owner doesn’t even bother to post a note on the cache page regarding the problem?

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t negativity I’m projecting- it’s enthusiasm! Let’s everybody take care of their caches & get some fulfilling & enjoyable finds out there!

I agree with The Beast…. and i’m all for Geocaching on X-mas!

I’m just another cacher, but I believe one should not place a cache if they would not take care of it within a 48 hour notice of a problem. It seems to me there are already way too many caches out there needing maintenance or archived due to lack thereof.

A better idea might be to get to know one or more of the local cachers, and ask them to adopt a cache for you.

in reply to: Cemetery event cache? #1745923

I figure if an event is going to last longer than an hour, there has to be a minimum of one potential geocache found for each hour (or 4 for each 50 miles driven) Lots of good food and drink will also make cachers magically appear.

For a project like you are talking about, good weather helps too. Don’t forget- someone owns that property! And where is all the brush going to go? Who becomes liable if someone cuts their GPS in half, etc.

Wost case scenario, only 2 people show up, & you spend the day doing the best you can. It’s still a great accomplishment, even if it’s not all you hoped for.

in reply to: Caching alone? #1745941

    Welcome mama fishcacher,
I have hunted about 250 of my 253 finds as a solo cacher. But, I’m probably also way bigger and meaner looking than you are. I would follow the same procedures you would any other time you are alone in the city or in the woods. Here’s a few that pop into my head-

    • Make sure someone else knows where you are going.
    • If you don’t feel safe, don’t go there!
    • Carry a cell phone
    • Carry a flashlight
    • Make sure you know your GPS well enough to find a way out, and always make a waypoint at your car so your can find it later.
    • Carry extra batteries for all your gear
    • A little pepper spray or mace isn’t a bad idea either, if not for a person, it works on mean dogs too!
in reply to: The Ultimate Geocaching GPS? #1736118

I was trying to think of things I would like to see improved compared to my Legend. Not much, really-

The buttons and clickstick are too hard to operate, moreso with gloves on. Maybe even worse because i’m a lefty.

Others seem awfully concerned about memory, but I fit about 80% of Wisconsin in my legend without any issues. Plenty for my geocaching purposes.

The lanyard is too small and the boss for the lanyard is too small to accept a bigger one. I tried using the loop on the battery cover, but then the cover came off while I was caching. I prefer to wear it around my neck when i’m not looking at it.

I would gladly accept a larger unit for another inch of screen.

The one thing I see on the new one that I wished for in the past was a quick way to switch from navigating to marking the geocache as “found” and then looking for the next nearest. Too many button pushes now.

Rechargeability- to include a car charger and charging stand for home.

I’m happy with the road maps on Roads & Recreation. If we could had an extreme gps, I would want to be able to switch between topo maps, road maps, and arial photos on the fly.

I haven’t yet admitted it to myself, but my Legend is dying. The screen has been getting worse and worse for awhile now. I had to reset it several times today. I heard somewhere that Garmin will fix it for next to nothing. I don’ know if I can give it up long enough to repair though……
