I would have never made it to many cache sites without using detailed maps in my Garmin. When I jump into a city I have no knowlege of, and can drive exactly to where I want to go, it is very empowering.
I don’t do paper.I’m not sure what the talk about lack of detail is. Garmin’s maps go right down to showing the logging roads in the state and county forests. In areas of newer construction, naturally some things will be missing. The maps were made based off USGS topo maps.
I do without an electronic compass. They eat batteries and need to be calibrated often. Most are also sensitive to being held level. The arrow pointer on non-electronic units is calculated through your movement in relation to the position of the satellites. Very accurate if you are not under heavy tree cover.

Or was this in a kayak?
Actually, this was record of the geo-camping trip I did in July. (A 2000 mile loop all around WI)
Must have been a strong tailwind at some point.
I launch off McKinley Beach or South Shore Yacht club mid-morning on most Sundays. It’s pretty much the only time I get into Milwaukee.
This would be a good time to hand off my Etrex Legend if it works for you or someone else that could participate in the hand-off.
You could hold onto it until I see you at the campout.
Let me know if this would work.
Edited to add thought

You mean like this?
Join and upload the picture to any site that hosts pictures. There are many out there like http://www.photobucket.com or http://www.flickr.com
Once it is hosted on the site, enter the web address of the picture between “img” tags.
For example-

GSAK does this fairly easily though it’s arc-filter function.
The problem with storing a database is that caches change daily.
The only time I have run into trouble is places where there are 10 overpasses criss-crossing in every direction (Milwaukee).
I’d be happy to loan out an Etrex Legend and/or a Magellan 600 if getting it into your hands works into my schedule.
You didn’t mention when/where you’d need it.
OK then…
Is there a policy that might cover situations like those that I have posted, or is the WGA going to have a meeting every time a new “potentially commercial” post comes up?

It will be interesting to see what the board comes up with.
First off, there is a big difference in posting that “XYZ GPS units are on sale at Gander Mountain this week” VS. offering something for private sale.
There is a grey area-
We don’t want a bunch of posts from people trying to sell things in order to make a profit. For example it would be wrong for me to use the WGA forums to advertise my home business products in an effort to entice people to buy stuff from me. That would be a commercial post.If I had a GPS that I wanted to offer for private sale to WGA members, that wouldn’t be considered a commercial post. But- what if I had six….or ten….or 50?
If I had 200 ammo cans that I wanted to sell to WGA members, how does that fit?
What if I offered 10% of the profits to the WGA? Would that make it ok?How about if I posted a link to my website, where I am selling alternative styles of WI Geocoins?
It seems to me that the original intention was to post individual items offered for private sale between members. Going beyond that was condidered a “commercial” post and removed from the boards.
You actually read the geocaching.com forums?!
You’re Fired!
I didn’t see the original post, only the subject line. I would rather not see anything offered for sale here unless it was funded and administered by a known member. (Along with being somewhat geocaching related, of course)
In deep thought on the subject here….(staying warm)
I feel that if a known WI cacher makes something geocaching related on his or her own dime, and would like to offer it for sale, it should be allowed in the “for sale” forum.
At what point something becomes “commercial” is normally obvious, but not always.
Hey Coastie! You should have stuck around on chat. We could of told sea stories!
I use both Garmin and Magellan so I can do either.
Digger’s going to look into getting a premium membership at geocaching.com and then getting GSAK. GSAK is the best way to deal with a Magellan eXplorist.
If you are going to be online tonite between 10-1030, log into Flushingrouse’s Geo-chat site and I can help walk you through it.
http://home.wi.rr.com/lcdcreations/chat.htmCaching should still be good here in the Kenosha area. Maybe 1/2″ of new powder, mostly just blowing around.
To bad, there is something about the -15° temperatures to come just say “stay home”.
