If there are any thoughts on selling some of the coins, I would like to suggest that part of them be sold to WGA members at the campout in a silent auction format. It would be a fun way to ensure members could bid on them without fighting the rest of world on E-Bay.
Not that I don’t love E-Bay.
It would seem to me that while individual positions on the board assume different responsibilities, it is the board as a whole that makes vital decisions. This being said, each board position is equally important.
A face-to-face meeting of current and newly appointed board members would be the only reasonable way to fit each person into the position which is best suited for them. This is the current policy, which makes good sense.
I’m impartial to which day an event is held, but not being a morning person lessens the likelyhood I would appear anywhere before 9am.

You can download the drivers here- http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00358-00
I use one of the Lexan boxes that Beast has for keeping my camera and cell phone in while kayaking. It’s tough as nails and has a great watertight seal that latches easily. They are a bit pricey, but make for a great see-through container.
Oh, and I bought it at Gander Mountain.

I was looking at making it, but unfortunately my schedule got pushed back a day, so I won’t be passing through the area until Sunday.

Well, you just did let us know you are interested. Once you are able to confirm that you plan to attend, you can do that here too.
Once we get within the 3 month window, then there will be an official event cache page on geocaching.com that you can post a “will attend” note to also.
I’m glad to see some more cachers making plans to attend. Rock Island truly is a very special place to camp and cache!
Randy, I am completely convinced that you need to get off the internet and get out on the trails!
I missed the 2nd costly event but my understanding was that it was the resturant (in Kenosha) that really screwed up the bill. I had a rather expensive meal there at the first breakfast when they screwed up the bill.
Needless to say, everyone needs to have some consideration for the event holder in choosing to run the event at their own discretion. I would not go to a breakfast cache without buying someone’s breakfast- (preferably my own).

Sometimes thoughts from the dark side can cause some excellent discussions. In reference to the WGA and funding, it has always been pointed out to everyone that we were very lucky that WGA is free and hence the need for donations at picnics and campouts.
Since I have never seen an accounting of the financial sitiuation of WGA and what they actually spend their money on, it is perhaps true that they no longer need donations. Good point Russ, maybe this is something from the past that I remember that no longer pertains.
Maybe I was taken out of context, but the WGA does operate on donations alone. We have been a bit over the “break even” mark in past years. There has been no additional push for more donations mainly due to the fact that we have not initiated any activities that would have brought on additional expenses.
I don’t know if membership being free makes us “lucky”. There are expenses that should be covered up front instead of after the fact. There are things we could be doing that would only happen if we could cover the cost. The real question is WHAT should we be doing that will be sure to make the future of geocaching better? Once this question is answered and agreed to, then we could work on ways to fund it.
One advantage to having no assets is that it makes accounting much easier.

Isn’t that the same thing as them awarding themselves? If in fact the decision has been made to “reward” people with the coins, why can’t board members get them? If in fact they have done some wonderful things for the WGA or Geocaching in general, then why not give them one.
I was not suggesting that no board members deserve a coin. My point was that the board should not be allowed to “give themselves a raise” without the approval of the membership.
All the examples you stated were of past or outgoing board members, which I stated, would be in a position I find more agreeable to accept an award.
As an alternative example-
What if board members were using WGA funds to pay for food, and drinks when attending board meetings? While they might indeed deserve some expenses be paid- shouldn’t the membership have a say in what and how much is deemed acceptable?quote:

Who actually paid for these coins?
Will board members automatically reward theirselves with some of them?
I really question a non-profit organization using funds to purchase rewards and wonder if it is even appropriate.
Since the concern of funding WGA is always something stressed to the membership, why not auction them on EBay or sell them at a premium price. Couldn’t these profits be better utilized to help fund GPS units for educational programs or fees and staples for the picnic and campout.
Your plan benefits too few of the many that geocache in Wisconsin. Lets start thinking of ways to benefit everyone, present and future.
As dark as it may be, I can sometimes appreciate the way you look at things Jeff.
I’m sure the BOD understands it would be innappropriate to award themselves or each other coins. However, I would think it appropriate to issue a coin to a departing board member at the end of their term.
I tend to think that this is one of the few times you will ever see WGA funds used for awards or prizes. Normally prizes and such are donated to the association, but in the case of something custom like a WI coin, a donation obviously would not be likely.
I’m not sure what you mean by your statement “the concern of funding WGA is always something stressed to the membership”, as I don’t remember it ever being a topic of discussion. If our membership became aware of some “great thing” that we should do as an association, I’m sure we would have no problem raising funds for it.
I’d really like to hear ways we could “benefit everyone, present and future.”
It’s easy to throw out ideas, but what actually benefits everyone is questionable. While on the trails at Pike Lake State Park, I got a ticket for not having a sticker on my windshield. I had it stuck on a clear 3×3 piece of plexi-glass which was laying on my dash.
When I went to the park office to complain, the ranger was quick to show me the regulation that specifies that the sticker must be attached to the winshield. I put my proverbial tail between my legs, shook my head, and left.
Next time I go to Pike Lake I’m going to duct tape the sticker right in the middle of my line of sight with about a square yard of tape- just to see what they have say about that.
Thanks Brian, for your kind words.
I think we all know how it is to feel strongly about something that we are passionate about. Emotions can come into play in a surprising way sometimes.
Like others, I have had an occasional difficulty reading too much into people’s posts here on the forums. It’s easy to misunderstand someone when their facial expressions are not part of the conversation. I try to call it like I see it, but I’m sure sometimes I need glasses.
The good thing is that I learned enough to realize it!

No, not yet, and doubtful- in that order.
The release of the 2005 coins took a great deal of time and money to plan and implement. Coming out with a new coin might take less time, but would still require design work and funding. A few of our members have sold some of their coins or released them into the wild. Check E-bay too- they were selling there.
A 2006 coin discussion is likely to start soon. Who’s going to start the new thread?
