While 7 is the “official” WGA FRS channel, there has been an optional channel (I believe it’s channel 13) that has become known as the “no whining” channel. A couple years back there was an issue with teams transmitting hints to other teams that were having difficulties locating some of the hides. It seems certain “oversensitive” people had a problem with hints being broadcast over the air. Hence the “no whining” channel was born. Feel free to monitor both channels, but use the underground channel for requesting and transmitting clues. Personally I think if a team has an issue with hints being broadcast, there’s a knob on your radio called the on/off switch, but that’s just me.

Apparently you are unfamiliar with out latest (but by far not our least experienced) approver. Just goes to show what happens when people assume. A big round of applause to our latest approver and the seamless integration into a growing workload of duties they have to endure. Oh yeah….you two Brians are doing OK too. 😉

in reply to: Opinion on travel bug logging #1764601

We have a couple of bugs that travel with us. We log them in and out of most caches we visit. If the cache in Costa Rica is archived it shouldn’t matter. Just log a note and date it the same as the original “found it” log. Write “bug drop” in the text area and drop the bug in. YOu can then pick it up.

As for the logging of things in and out of caches…virtual or not…What’s the difference in that and passing a bug around for several others to “discover” before taking it back with you? At least if the bug was with you at the virtual, it was WITH YOU and not someone else! Log the bug! Let it have the miles it deserves!

Doh! Sorry, I forgot to mention the PDA

    in reply to: Caches #1764595

Yes, there will be laptops for loading waypoints. Though there are usually cables for all units, it can’t hurt to bring it just in case. Usually anything that loads with a USB cable is covered. We’ll also have our e-trex cable and a Magellan 5 pin cable (Meridian, SporTrack, etc.).

As for logging, you may or may not want to log the temps. Some people do, and some don’t. It’s up to you. To log and receive a smiley for each cache, you have to go to the main cache page and log as “attended” for each hide. (Don’t forget to do it for the actual event though)

There will be tons of people around to help with anything else you may need that day. Have a great time! See you there…CB&MB

I’m sure someone who’s more of a computer brain than myself will jump in and help you, but for now…are you planning to come to the WGA picnic on Saturday? There will be tons of people that can help with your unit and computer. Bring them along, as well as your software and you’ll learn a lot! If you aren’t able to make it, may I suggest you contact a cacher in your area for help…hey Cachew…got any ideas for our new friend?!

Thanks everyone! Just trying to make sure no one feels left out. Anyone know if any out of state folks are planning on coming? Not counting Illinois of course, they’re always represented well.

OK, understandable, but maybe just a note somewhere saying they can still attend. I guess seeing people that had to be turned away from attending the Camp Jeep Geo Tent has made me a bit oversensitive. Within the first hour of the on line registration for Camp Jeep ’06 some months back, the 200 openings for the Geo sessions were filled. There were probably twice that many people that came by to see if they could still register. The popularity of Geocaching is growing. I hope the social aspects of our WGA events and Team Badger outings continue to grow as well.

    Well-said Jeff.
This was an incredible opportunity that we all had the pleasure of experiencing Having a behind the scenes look at many of the various venues within the event was a real treat as well. Introducing Geocaching to avid newbies, watching them discover the same passion we all feel for our sport, and the pride I felt as I watched my team learn to navigate, then find the hides, was an experience I won’t ever forget.

Everything about Camp Jeep ’06 was truly an amazing event. I now understand what makes Jeep and Geocaching such a natural fit. Everyone we met showed us warm hospitality and made us feel welcomed right away. Our host and sponsor, and the ones responsible for making all of this happen, is Rodale Publishing, and specifically Megan and Stephanie. We even managed to take them out on their first geocache hunt during our off hours. I believe New York City will soon be seeing a couple new cachers logging finds soon. It’s through their hard work and dedication that all of this was possible. Rodale gave away 5 Garmin 60csx units, 40 backpacks filled with various goodies for the winning teams, and countless white jeeps and green jeep TB’s during the 3-day event.

The other members of the team included Donna, our Playtime staff member, who also worked tirelessly throughout the entire event. Making sure the sessions ran smoothly and safely, and insuring everyone was having a good time, was just part of her contribution to it’s success. The head of the GeoTech team, and course designer, was Tanya, aka: gadget girl, a Texas Geocacher who has a heart as big as her state. Last, but certainly not least, there was Bill, our fifth GeoTech team member. A San Diego Geocacher, retired Marine, and Jeep enthusiast in his own right. (And a pretty tough Tech to beat out on the course.) I hope the camaraderie and friendships we developed with all of them lasts as long as the memories do.

Some of my favorite memories include joining all the Techs for a splash in the shark tank after the final session was over. After spending an afternoon keeping up with the winning Red Team, including 3 girl track team stars, the water was a refreshing finish to a hot afternoon.
The grilled pizza for lunch, a definite taste treat for the hungry Geo Tech on the go.
Watching an 8-year-old girl showing her grandfather how to input a Go-To.
Seeing a 50something man climbing a rock tower, (for the team), then later volunteering to jump into the shark tank, (again for the team), the whole time being cheered on by his wife.
All the other Camp Jeep staff members, who became involved in the games, either thru association, location, or enthusiasm.

All in all, this was a great opportunity to introduce Geocaching to a wide range of people, and we had a wonderful time. I believe Wisconsin, Wisconsin Geocaching , and the WGA was well represented by our team of Techs.

Now if only Jeep would send me the new Commander vehicle, after all…it’s named after me, isn’t it? 😉

Did someone say “Jeep?” Hmmmm….I wonder if any will turn up at the WGA picnic…do you think that maybe those who attended Camp Jeep got their hands on any of them? And do you think they will be willing to share them with anyone else?

Film canister? An attack? Hmmmmm! (LOL!)
I agree that if you’re heart isn’t in it, you shouldn’t do it. Fun is very important. Guess I’m just sad that I won’t be able to play in Port this summer. Last year, Joe and I had such a great time. I wanted to repeat that with Bob this year (he was fishing last year…blah!). Let us know if plans change…we’d love to make a run up.

C’mon…I feel sure that you could find a few places to hide stuff! There’s always the guy who sells fruit instead of the one who sells veggies. And what about having a person holding a pole with a cache on the end of it instead of in the sign. C’mon Ron…you can do it!

We got one a while ago…finally grabbed it into our inventory. You’ll love the name: Devil’s Thumb…how dang funny is that?! We had quite the laugh about it. Guess now we’ll have to go out and cause some trouble!

You have a duck boat? Bob wanted to ride in one of those when we were on vacation…Ducks in the Dells…I wouldn’t let him. (actually, we just never got around to it) I’ve been going there for years and have never been on one. Let us know when and where to sign up for the ride. 😀

    FOR THE RECORD:
No one is signing my name on any logs, anywhere. It was a little joke between Lostby7 and myself about a game that technically isn’t even geocaching. So, calm down folks! Same thing applies here that applies when caching: If I’m not physically with you, don’t be writing my name on that log!
