Cool! I actually saw your log for the Groundspeak HQ cache. I’d love to make it out there someday!

At least Jeremy was smiling for your picture. I saw another one from someone else that day (Keystone’s) and he wasn’t quite so smiley. I guess he was in a lot of pictures that day…

So, how about a description of the Mothership?

I agree that our approvers do a lot. When I hid my first cache, we had only one approver, at it took four hours between hitting the submit button and the cache having its first find! Lately, I’ve never had to deal with 2-3 week waiting times for caches; the average seems to be a day or two which is borderline between “just right” and “Mrs. Cheesehead is going to throw out my computer if I check my email one more time to see if my cache has been approved yet”.

I think trying coming to a consensus for a guideline for how many caches someone should be able to place in a period of time will be about as successful as a guideline for how many caches a person should find before they hide their first cache. It will be different for everybody.

I think there are plenty of people who would volunteer to be reviewers, either as primary reviewers or as backups for when the primaries need a break. I also don’t see why those people would have to be board members, although it would certainly be useful for them to at least be WGA members so that everyone is on the same page with our state hiding guidelines.

Yeah, I realized that too late. I would have felt dirty signing the log without going through the whole series, though.

There’s a Waymark there now as well!

Actually, I’m caching more in the state than I’ve ever been. For a time, I had more Illinois finds than Wisconsin finds. Now that I don’t work south of the border anymore, I’m starting to shift the balance. All you find cache hiders in the Appleton area sure helped that out! (Watch out, Sheboygan… You’re next!)

Thanks for doing this. I make it a point to try and keep the diabled caches hidden in my area to a minimum by contacting their owners, etc. I, too, have posted a SBA on caches when I get no response after logs and emails. I’ve got one, however, which I don’t quite know what to do. I posted a needs maintenance log to get the owners attention and he responded, saying he would replace it in a few days. Now, 3 months later, it is still disabled. The cache is this one. Anyone have any suggestions?

That’s exactly an appropriate spot for an SBA. Cache has been disabled since last June, several logs wondering about it, and it looks like no finds by the owner(s) in almost a year, so they probably aren’t active anymore.

Brians, are you now requiring that all multicaches have all the stages entered using the new waypoint feature? If so, then at least all current multis will be findable even if a stage goes bad.

Of course, the problem is that older caches might not have this info. Something I’d suggest is if you have a multi that was approved before you could add waypoints is to edit it to include that info, just in case. That would probably help the reviewers in the future as well in case a new cache is placed near your multi and the 0.1 mile guideline needs to be checked.

I don’t see any problem with it. On my latest tear through Appleton, I requested the archival of a couple caches, one which had been disabled for ten months. I suspect in a lot of cases, these cachers are no longer active, so archiving these caches will offend no one because they’ll probably never even know.

Having these caches archived will also make for higher-quality PQs for people as unfindable caches won’t be cluttering up their queries.

Among other things, there was a database problem that required a reboot. People were reporting that PQs were being generated without logs

Hopefully they’ll get this all ironed out. I’ve gotten used to the site being slow in weekends, but not during the week…

4417 Without filtering finds, 3965 with filtering finds.

That’s too bad. I’d have to agree with Team Deejay though that Geocoins are just too valuable and collectible to be used as bait in caches. (I guess that’s part of why I don’t see the point in them, but that’s just me…)

If you want to get a bunch of cachers into your area, try doing what I did for Clue. I hid a big series of caches, but didn’t have them approved until a specific date on which I also held a breakfast event to kick off the series. I attracted probably 100 cachers ranging from Idaho to Ohio who had a blast trying to be the first to finish the series as well as grab some of the other caches in the area.

One of my Clue caches went missing a couple of months ago. It’s in a natural hole left from a tree that fell over. When I went to check on it, the hole was filled with water and frozen over, so I couldn’t tell if the cache was there or not. I put a temporary one in its place until everything melted and I could go and see if it was still there.

I stopped by today to find that the cache (an ammo box) was nowhere to be found. Either it was muggled or it floated away. Considering all the water that was still flowing here and all the rain we had recently, I had to wonder…

I followed the “river” to the spillway and down to the reservoir. I started looking around the water and noticed a high floodline where the water must have risen after the recent rain. I saw a dark shape on the opposite side and wondered, garbage, or..?

I walked around, and sure enough, my cache had migrated about 500 feet away and about 20 feet lower that where I last saw it. Gotta love those ammo boxes though… Everything was dry!

Look at the rocks here. There had to be a lot of water flowing down for an ammo box to make it without getting hung up!
