I just added Iowa to my list this past weekend, which is now the farthest west I have ever cached.

This is my strategy. I get a GPX file with the 500 nearest unfound caches, so wherever I am in SE WI or NE IL, I can always tell when I’m near a cache.

One of the bugs I placed in the Breakfast cache is still there. One went to Aphrael and is making its way to Texas, one went to the team from Minnesota and is now in a Minnesota cache, and one went to the Brews, who need to log that they now have the bug. (hint hint!)

I made some durable plastic tags for them, so hopefully people will realize that they aren’t trade items and keep them.

If you’ve got a data cable for your GPSr, when you print out the page, also click the link to download the *.LOC file. You can use EasyGPS to open the file up, then send it to your GPSr and save you the trouble of having to enter it yourself. Takes about a minute.

And if Kelly does it himself, it’s the extremely rare Triple Markwell…

North to south, 0.001 degrees is a constant 6.074 feet. East to west, it varies from about 4.48 feet in southern WI to 4.33 feet in central WI to 4.18 feet in the north.

A quick guide can be found here.

It’s just odd to see someone take a bug home from the picnic, “grab” the bug from the picnic, then a couple of days later, someone “grabs” the bug from them, then drops it back into the picnic cache even though the first team still has the bug in their posession at home. They have to grab it from the picnic cache yet again.

While I realize that some of the rules of geocaching are fairly loose, this just doesn’t seem to be right. If you don’t have the bug in your posession when you log it in, then you probably shouldn’t be logging it at all.

So that’s what’s going on… I’m still getting dozens of emails noting that people are dropping travel bugs into the breakfast cache two days after the event is over!. While I like the idea of doing TB exchanges at events, I think that this completely goes against the spirit of what TBs are supposed to be for. I think this can be filed under the “It’s all about the numbers” category, as the only reason I can see to be doing this is to inflate your “Travel Bugs Found” stat.

Unfortunately, I don’t see much of a way to prevent this. You could put out a box for people to drop their bugs into and keep it sealed until people leave. Then they could reach in and pull one out to take with them as they go. This wouldn’t prevent people from sharing the number before or after, but at least it would help to prevent people from writing down numbers of all the bugs present. The other problem is if you pick out a bug which has a goal that you cannot fulfill.

Hopefully we Wisconsin cachers can rise above this and set a better example…

Says the person with the unpronouncable team name…

Congrats! It was nice meeting you at the breakfast!

There will be three Jeep TBs available at the breakfast tomorrow morning for those itching to get their hands on one.

You’ll have to earn it, though…

I think the technical term for this thread is “derailed”…

I’m probably going to bring my laptop so I can upload coordinates for anyone who wants them. I have a cable for the Garmin eTrex series. If you have a cable for another model and are interested in an automatic upload, please bring your cable along!

Oh by the way… at last count, there may be as many as 93 people showing up for this one… If you’re making food, you may want to bring a little extra…

    * BUMP *

If you’re coming to the breakfast on Saturday, don’t forget to sign up for food! The more entrees the better!

All the temp caches have been hidden except for a “kid’s cache” that will be hidden near the pavillion. There are seven total, in addition to the caches already present in the park.

I have three of the Jeep TBs that I have some devious ways in mind to distribute.

See you there on Saturday! Pray for sun! Come hungry!

Moscow, We Have a Problem is one of my favorites. I think it’s a good example of what potential new virtuals should aspire to be.
