I would certainly be interested in voting for COTY, but since the only one of the twelve that I have been to is my own, which I assume I am not allowed to vote for anyway, I am unable to vote.
While I do think the COTY is a great idea, I agree that a cache winning three votes to one, to one, to one, to one, to one, to one, to one, to one, is not as meaningful as it should be.
Here’s a question for the database admin: how many different people are actually voting for COTM from month to month? Is it the same half dozen or so each month, or do the voters change? Given the number of people that turn out at WGA events, one would think that there should be dozens of votes cast on a monthly basis, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Perhaps we need to figure out a way to make more of the Wisconsin cachers aware of and involved with the site.
For example, has anyone thought of putting out some sort of newsletter? It could be put out on a regular basis, perhaps a couple of times a month, and include information such as reminders to vote for COTM, or details of the next WGA event. Also with the data scraping from geocaching.com and Trudy & The Beast staying on top of milestones, that could be a feature as well.
Of course this would be worthless if there are only a half dozen people actually registered on the WGA site, so there also need to be a better way of putting out the word about the WGA than people just stumbling across the site by chance. I know TATB were sending out letters to people that found their caches which may be a bit much, but perhaps people could be send out a quick non-threatening non-form-letter type message saying something like “Thanks for finding my cache! Glad you enjoyed it! By the way, if you’re looking for more info on Geocaching in Wisconsin, you might want to head over to http://wi-geocaching.com/ for more info!”
Or something like that.
Of perhaps I’m way off base. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks! Boy am I sore today! My goal was to hit 100 by the end of the year. Talk about cutting it a little close…
And quite a trip as well…

So what scares you more: finding hunters at Jingle Bell Rock or finding ‘hunters’ at Swamp Trail…?

There’s no mechanism for polls here, but I’ve always wondered about this…
If a cache is located in a State Park:
a) I always buy a state park sticker every year anyway, so I’m not affected.
b) If there’s a cache I’m interested in finding, I’ve got no problem buying a sticker, or even just a day pass so I can find it.
c) I’ll probably put off looking for a cache in a state park until I get a sticker for some other reason, such as going camping.
d) I won’t pay to have to be able to seek out a cache, so I’ll never hunt for one in a state park.
I would vote for “B”, as I bought my 2002 sticker originally so I could get into Bong to hide the cache, although I would have ended up buying one later on in the year anyway for a camping trip at Peninsula.

I take the blame for that. I did not realize the area was opened up for hunting after deer season was over. For that reason I will probably move it elsewhere.
Now that I think about it, I wonder what Bong’s policy is? I have a cache hidden there as well, although the pieces of it probably aren’t in any areas where there might be a danger of hunters.

Which is probably going to be my course of action. Hopefully he hasn’t been back already.
Ken has sent me an email afterwards with some concern about the openness of the cache. I had hoped that the spot was remote enough and away from any paths that it wouldn’t be stumbled upon. I guess it wasn’t remote enough…
A campout shirt would be neat, even if it was just the WGA logo with “2003 Geo-Campout” added underneath.
If we could add a team name as well, and have them available for pickup at the campout to save on shipping, that would be neat!
I think it should be open to any cache that won COTM or were nominated, as there are several runners-up that did not win, but were nominated over several months (although there’s no way to know if the same people were nominating it).
Devil’s advocate: The only problem that I can forsee is that if there are 30+ caches to pick from and only a dozen or so people vote, you could end up with a 12-way tie.
Very nice work! I’m eager to see what the response will be to this article.
As an aside, who selected the graphics for the article? It looks like we’re targeting lilly pads and wildflowers…

I actually met him a week or so ago while hunting for “Murdock”. Apparantly his job takes him all around the country, and wherever he goes, he makes sure to bring along some cache printouts so he has something to do besides sit in his hotel room.
Otter, you need to get yourself a job like that! You’d really be in business!

We were out there in cacheland too. We didn’t see the butterflies, or deer flies, or mosquitos. I think we would have enjoyed the butterflies. At this time of year when the puff balls mature [what fun] and burrs replace mosquitos as a hiker’s nemeses
I’ll take burrs over ticks and mosquitos any day. I doubt I’ll be contracting lyme disease or West Nile from a burr.
Last week was nice, although the temperature wasn’t all that great for me. It was cool enough that you had to wear a sweatshirt or something, but just warm enough that the hiking made the sweatshirt too warm to wear.I’m looking forward to the falling leaves and much improved GPSr reception…
I haven’t found any around here, so I resorted to Cheaper Than Dirt for my ammo box needs.

Yes.
I already saw it when it was originally posted.
Took a day for me to stop humming.
Now it’s back.
Thanks, loads.
“Longitude, Latitude! Latitude, Longitude!”
Very interesting article. Brings back the ol’ history lessons. But where was Mel in all this? 🙂

If we only had a half a dozen caches hidden, I would consider moving it, but with the number that we do have, I don’t think that one “two-for-one” cache is worth getting too concerned over.
