It’s a little hard to read because of scaling, but here’s a map that sort of shows what counties are covered.

I use a Garmin eTrex Legend. It’s got all the features I need, plus it’s small and lightweight, so I can hang it around my neck while hunting without it becoming a bother.

The mapping features are nice as well, for non-geocaching use, although I wish there was a way to rotate the display 90 degrees. It fits nicely in an alcove in my car’s dash, but only on its side, so I have to turn my head sideways to read it.

I’ve never used one, but I’m sure the Magellan users will be piping in shortly to tout their features…

BTW, I’ve tried using the WAAS function, and have found no advantage from it. I think it’s only most useful in open areas, such as out on the water.

Uh oh, Steve… Bad experience hunting a cache?

Usually when I hide mine, I leave the container in the car first and go scope out the spot, then mark a waypoint. I go back to the car, get the cache, and then see if the coordinates I marked get me to the same spot. If I get to within 20 feet or so, then that’s acceptable to me. If not, then I start to make adjustments as necessary to my set waypoint until it’s set correctly.

I’ve started bringing a compass along with me, so I can also walk a distance away from the cache and make sure that the GPS needle (after finding north with the compass) points to the cache from a couple different locations.

While I don’t try to get the coordinates so exact that people can walk right up to the cache (What fun is that?) I certainly also don’t want to put people 75 feet away from where then should be searching. (What fun is that? )

    Brian,

I’ll probably be coming up tonight to hide them as I’m not sure of any other night this week I’ll be available. I’m coming up from Kenosha, and hopefully I’ll be up to pick them up a little after 5, but who knows with the construction…

If you’re not going to be around and want to leave them out, that’s fine.

My only other question is: do we want these within a certain vicinity of the site, or are we covering the entire park?

Please respond here or drop me an email so I know that you got this so I don’t drive up up and find that you were out all day and didn’t know I was coming!

Sounds good to me. I’m not sure what day I’ll be able to go up, but I’m probably going to wait for a day where there’s not a big chance of rain. If you’re going to be there next week in the evening, perhaps I’ll come up then.

BTW they both like Sprint24 because my dad owned a Sprint car and my brother raced it for 7 years

Yay! I was starting to get confused as well! Where does the ’24’ come in? Car number?

Wow, I completely forgot to mention that in my logs. For all those that missed it, I think we had some escapees from the Bristol Renaissance Fair at our site.

For all the time I have wondered what people must be thinking while I was wandering around in the woods staring at what probably looks like a cell phone, it was nice to be able to stare back at someone else for a change…

I had a great time, and hope to do more of these in the future!

Hopefully the mission won’t be jeopardized by this

in reply to: How does this get shut down #1744908

On the reporting page now, in addition to “Found it!” and “Couldn’t find it!” there is now and option for “This cache should be archived” which is probably the best way to get the attention of the admins.

You know, I even looked around first to see if there was already a thread.

Chalk it up to temporary insanity.

Feel free to delete this thread…

Huh. Lived in this state all my life, and I swear I have never heard of Langlade County. True, It is a part of the state I’ve never been to, but you’d think in 32 years, the name would have come up sometime

I’m going up to the Upper Penninsula this summer to help my dad build a deck, and to place a cache in a spot that is devoid of them. We’ll be right next to Iron County (Hurley), so maybe I’ll place it there instead.

I saw that post. I don’t see how it could be considered “elitist”. Their reasoning was something like: only a certain few that had the ability to geocache the entire state would be eligible, so it’s “elitist”.

That would be like saying that you couldn’t post a find for going to the campout because not everyone has the ability to get away for a weekend for something like that.

I remember this one… I’ll bet whoever dumped that there never thought that anyone would ever be walking anywhere near there.

Does anyone know what a meth lab looks like? I’ve seen some odd looking things in the woods before, but I couldn’t figure out what they could possibly have been there for.
