is the finder making the find cheaper for himself? Previous finders?
I would say it depends! What was the cache owner’s intentions when placing it. Does the cache page mention crossing the ice as an option?
I do think it’s a bit different than working on a puzzle.
Again, would I walk on ice instead of using a boat? Perhaps once as I agree walking on ice is “risky too”. However I usually find the cache using the most “adventurous” means possible. For instance, oasis in menasha. I could have easily jumped off my dad’s boat numerous times as we drove by and made the find. I chose to wait until I could do something a bit “new” and learn a few things along the way….
I think s|s’s point about just ignoring them is a good one. That is what I do with most of the tree climbing caches. I’m afraid of heights (I fell from a roof when I was a kid and got seriously injured), and I am “big” and tall. All attributes that don’t mix well with tree climbing. I will probably never log zoesbro’s tree cache and some of s|s’s tree caches. Do I care that they sit on the map not found? Nope. Other’s can risk limbs and serious injury and I can benefit from reading about their adventures.
A little offtopic here but yet on topic when it comes to simply ignoring puzzles if puzzles aren’t for you. And even if you find yourself in a group caching and the group goes to a puzzle, you can always choose to stay in the vehicle or find another nearby cache or go along and just know that you found a cache and abide by the owner’s wishes, whatever those may be.
There is a difference between this scenario and encouraging finding puzzles that others didn’t solve (i.e. “puzzle tours” where a group “shares their solves” or divides up puzzles and solves a few and you all go and find them all). Of course if you’re in a group and you are driving you could always choose to not do puzzles when you are with others that didn’t work on the puzzle! There’s always next time. That puzzle cache will probably still be there next time and if it’s in my neck of the woods it will probably be lonely.
I guess it doesn’t bother me as much as it does s|s but I see it on my caches too.
If it’s a husband and wife and they both have accounts or two brothers or whatever I’m cool with that. I’m even cool with bending rules now and again to get the solves on other peoples caches.
However, I do believe that endorsing what happened on “Carol for Paprdolls” after the lonely event is not the best way to play the game. Yeah it’s marc’s cache and he can do what he wants but that probably did “sting” and upset other players who legitimately solved that puzzle. Now were comparing apples to oranges here…
There is not even a resemblance between the meaning that is put into a typical s|s puzzle and the absolute lack of meaning that goes into most cryptic marc puzzles. I’m not picking on marc, just contrasting the two types of puzzles.
I am not a fan of cryptic puzzles. I’ve said that many times. I’ve only published a couple that fit this bill myself and one’s long archived because I was not happy with how cryptic it became. I am a huge fan of straight forward puzzles with lots of content and opportunity to learn new things. For me to cut corners on those is a lot like cutting a few miles off that marathon (as gotta run relates too..) Yeah, i’ll cut corners on cryptic number puzzles or decoding puzzles because I don’t really care what the decryption was to be honest. Goes to show you that everyone still plays by their own rules and opinions, likes and dislikes.

I figured I couldn’t get out of it 😆
One thing I would definitely do differently this year is I would spend less of my own hard earned money on the event and look for more volunteer help. That is a tip I can definitely lend to this thread as well. You want to get others to help organize pieces of the event and try to get donations to cover some things. In our case, the parks dept in Appleton is great. They have provided trash bags and picked up the trash both years so far. It’s a big win-win as they continue to support geocaching in the parks and we help out with cleaning each spring. They also required filling out waiver forms for each participant and adult signatures for those under 18. I would imagine you will find similar processes in place in your city as well.
Side Question for anyone: Can we have an official listed social event in addition to the CITO event or is that double dipping?
Having run a CITO event last year in the Fox Valley area, I would actually encourage this! You should only do mostly cleanup at the CITO. Trying to add other activities draws attention away and most who showup are “in the mood to cleanup a park” and not really wanting “other things”. At least the crew that showed up at my event were this way. Provide some bottled water and a snack or some fresh hot coffee if it’s early and most folks are happy. Toss in a couple door prizes and you’ve got yourself a pretty successful CITO event.
I would stage a CITO early in the day and then another event later in the day at some other place. I don’t beleive this is “against the rules” so to speak and you would probably get people attending both events and some only attending one or the other. Some people don’t like to cleanup parks. Some dont like social caching events but would come and cleanup a park in their neighborhood.
Sounds like something I might consider for the Fox Valley spring CITO…
First, based on reading some other’s comments on how they played and reading their logs I can say that I wasn’t nearly as adventurous. I finished in the top 10 because I live in the land of puzzles and there were a ton of lonely puzzles in March of 2008. I finished 1st that month with just over 250 points and that is what allowed me to even be a contender for top 10.
I will answer in a different order than was asked:
What was the dumbest thing you did or attempted?
Easily has to be canoing off Jefferson park to find Oasis GC16W5J in 3 (was it 3, seemed like 5 or 6) foot choppy waters with Hemi knowing full-well the container was probably missing and we came prepared with new ammo can and some (bright orange) rope in hand. Only cost me a new cell phone, camera was spared and neither of us drowned. Scored 16.5 points on that one. Ah… the memories. Btw, a close second was probably breaking through the ice on Black Otter Lake in Hortonville trying to find Jamaica Mistaica GCZB4P (s|s witnessed the event) and we weren’t even looking in the right spot! What was your most challenging?
Espagueti Occidentales (GC14WJJ) – For me, this is the most difficult puzzle I have ever laid eyes on. By difficult I don’t mean cryptic. Cryptic is not difficult, it’s frustrating. This one is difficult because you know what you have to do and no matter what approach I took it just kept taking longer and longer. It’s no surprise this one lands on the lonely list often. What was the nastiest container you found?
To be honesy I don’t think any of the lonely caches I found were “nasty”. After all, I do live near Dave who revisits and maintains all of our lonely caches for us in the land of puzzles.I did try to find Cacalin GCVEMD (Now Archived) the EXACT same day as the owner had gone out and removed and archived it (which I didn’t know they were going to do this). If you ever had the joy of doing this cache, you probably know why I nicknamed this one “Bushwack He**”. (if you are tall like me it’s bad..) So I scrounged the entire shoreline here for more than an hour and I ended up finding an ammo tape covered plastic tab from a lock and lock! (what are the odds…) Was a bummer I couldn’t claim the smiley on this one. I did my part and removed the litter for 3 points.
What was your favorite Lonely Cache?
Real Gone | Baby Gonna Leave Me (GCZPTW) – My favorite lonely cache find of the year. A brilliantly designed puzzle that’s only been found a dozen times in over 2 years and I’m still the last finder on this one since last March. This one was funny because I didn’t have a replacement log sheet with me and the log was soaked and I needed to sign something to prove I was there as I know the owner and Dave would be by later to see if I indeed had solved and visited. I ended up using a piece of the SOLVED matrix from Espagueti Occidentales as my replacement log sheet in this cache. I’m sure the owner pulled it back out but it was an interesting twist that no one caught onto.I see more lonely puzzle finds on my horizon…. I have See Through Characters, Clang Boom Steam, Modles Nees, and several others to look forward to this year.

My family’s now booked. Site 096. Would have loved to get an electric site but at least the battery will give me lights and this one’s near drinking water and a bathroom so that’s cool.
Hopefully the quarter barrels and hand guns will be on the other side of the family sites that weekend! 🙂
A job well done! I probably would have socialized more but my son really wanted to bowl so we ended up bowling 3 games. It was definitely a fun location. Great food too as I am sure some got to experience. The turnout was definitely a “who’s who” of geocaching in WI from what I could see.
Onto another great year of the LCG.
We’ve got all sorts of new smilies in the Fox Valley 🙂 One’s in an especially fun place.
Congrats!!! It was fun being part of your milestone frames 🙂
Congrats Pete!!
A sticky posting in each regional forum sounds like a great spot for something like this.
It would make an excellent addition to the site!

that is sweet!!
Like I said, perfect bowling weather.
What? They now know that they should have given ya a Garmin?
End up buying one of those myself last christmas. This christmas I asked for a garmin nuvi for navigating and she got me a nextar. I guess some things never change. lol
Naw she regrets it because my wife complains to her that “he’s geocaching, (long pause) again…”
the report back from the kids is the water trick works if the water is really hot but if it’s closer to luke warm its rather uneventful. they couldn’t find any bubbles at grandmas house to try that one.
will have to try the banana trick too. interestingly enough, if you put sorta ripe bananas in the freezer it does not stop the ripening and they continue to turn brown and then black in the feezer. must be related to this frozen banana hammer trick somehow.
