I cracked it open. I may not ever be able to load custom POI’s to it but it’s an excellent unit for the black friday price & rebate.
It will still come in handy.
Maybe a poll should be made if ALL the members like the new logo
i know there are many proponents of this statement in the WGA masses but those people will all state parallels to other democratic processes. Like marc and others mentioning the presidential election.
The difference between those things and this topic is this topic CAN be revisited. They really aren’t the same thing at all. There are no “rules” governing how the WGA picks their logo. Show me in the bylaws anything regarding how we should choose our logo…. We are after all a club. A group of hobbyists with a website and a couple of events. If you look at it that way, there’s really no big reason not ask the group how they feel and if the group feels a certain way then we should revisit. It’s pretty simple.
No tshirts have been printed right? Did anyone change any letterhead?
Go ahead and flame and argue but I really think that this could be up for revisit if the group wants it to be.
So here’s an idea to satisfy all those who argue that it should never be revisited. Let’s have a formal polling of the group. Simple question: Should we revisit the decision on the new logo: Yes or No. If the majority votes no then it stays as is. If the majority votes yes then it’s revisited under the new boards regime. Thoughts?
I tried to publish a cache that taught you about Recycling. Recycling is mandated by city ordinance in the City of appleton so it’s sort of a law, right? Well, according to Groundspeak, recycling is an “Agenda” and therefore cannot be the subject nature for a cache. Well.. it actually can be the subject of a cache as long as you don’t recommend (or even hint at recomending) that someone recycle versus throw it in the garbage dump. Of course we all know present caches don’t set precedence which I could come up with many caches that would not comply with this relatively new “Agenda” rule.
Btw, this was a cache to be published in coordination with my CITO event last year. CITO is apparently an “Agenda” that Groundspeak allows but they don’t follow through with that mentality. It’s interesting that many corporations around the US are “going green” and here we have one that thinks recommending someone recycle (in essence recommending you obey the city law in Appleton) is an agenda.
Part of the reason this cache was being published was because in many CITO’s, recycling is not done. In our event we ended up filling an entire city garbage can with recyclable cans and plastics. Which were recycled.
I appealed to Groundspeak with the content that was rejected (stating much of the above in my appeal) and lost. I gave up and even archived the failed non-published listing. Then was convinced to alter the cache page and try again.
You can now see the resulting active cache here ( GC1B245 ). The name was one of the items that had to be changed to get it published. So in a move of utter discontent with the whole thing, I came up with the cache name you see now.
This puzzle cache was solveable at the CITO event with resources that were printed and brought to the event and one of the sources of info is the actual brochure that Outagamie County puts out regarding recycling.
In the end I did get it published but getting there was the tough part. Who would have thought?
And for the record, the quote on the item at ground zero was purely coincidental. This cache is not a comment on the quote at ground zero. Some have thought so and I haven’t had the heart to break it to them that the cache theme is truely about recycling. The location was chosen because it was close to the CITO. 😀
Zuma says this in his Candidates corner post:
I will add that it is not likely that MWGB will ever come to Wisconsin. I spoke to -Eleanor- and The Moop Along (two of the chief organizers of MWGB) last year at the event, and they see it as a Michigan, Ohio, Indiana event, as it historically has been.
What I want to know is, why do they phrase it the
Mid West geobash if they leave out Minnesota and Wisconsin. I think they should rename it the ohio-valley geobash.
Never been to either but If I had my choice I would attend the one in Tennessee as I’ve always wanted to visit Tennessee.
Sagasu just loves to see trackables in his caches, don’t we all. I think he gets more worked up about the uneven trades because he, more than any of the rest of us, works diligently to place trackables in his caches.
I wasn’t trying to pick on Dave. It was more of a joke then anything. One thing to keep in mind about Mr Sagasu is he visits his own caches and exchanges trackables and adds them. That is probably a rare occurence. Most who build these travel bug “jails” with rules are not like him. That is why even though I am not admimant like he is about even trade in any random cache, I do respect his wishes on his caches because he cares for them and the items that go into them and come out of them.
For the most part, the TB/GC owner’s wishes come first. Then those of the cache owners. And they were put out by owners to move. I have a bunch of trackables out there and only 1 of them continues to move. The rest are basically in someone’s toybox or in the garbage I’m sure.
the old logo would do nothing to help you understand what it’s about. I would think, what the heck is that weird green square box pac-man looking thing & a Ipod in front of WI and with that thought would still have no clue what geocaching was.
Atleast the new logo has an outline of wisconsin on it.
You might think I am not fond of the new logo. That has never been part of anything I have said (other than how cruddy it looks on my home monitor… the brown is not right on that monitor nor is the green as compared to my high-end work monitor) As logo’s go, it’s not half-bad. It is much better “looking” than the (now) prior logo.
I do think that the prior logo made us look “toucy feely” (not outdated) and like a “club” or hobby group. The new logo loses the “touchy feely” and loses the “club” feeling (now it “feels” almost like a government letterhead item) and I still maintain that it lacks identity (and so does the new pepsi logo).
did you hear that Sagasu? 😈
I have to agree with gottarun on this one. (that doesn’t happen much…)
After thinking about the similarity point, I have to wonder: Is it a bad thing that State goecaching organization logo’s look alike? They are in fact similar organizations with similar goals. They are hobby organizations not corporate businesses. However, we could have done something to set it apart from the one it is similar to. We could have also done something to make the logo identify who we are.
What I think would have set this design apart from the one it is similar to would have been if we would have maintained the GPS and ammo box somehow that was on our prior logo to carry forward a bit of the feel of it. At a minimum, the GPS which is a major part of our hobby. Placement could have been almost right where it was on the old logo. Pick a spruced up new design for a GPSR that doen’t look “dated”. I am by no means an artist. However, I have worked on a logo project before in the corporate world and I think an artist could have worked on keeping the feel of the old logo, at least in part with the identity. That was probably not what was asked for because “the masses voted”. However, we did not ask for a Brown Wisconsin either (as pointed out by mr cheezehead I believe). Throwing a GPSr into the logo with the same lettering style and map style as what was passed in voting would probably would have only upset a handful of people who voted for this particular logo. It would have still kept the feel of the voted for logo AND kept part of our identity.
I do agree with one thing s|s commented on, that as part of this change, we have lost a bit of the identity of the group with this new logo — specifically, nothing Geocaching related at all is reflected in the new logo. Take away the wording under the letters WGA and you just leave people guessing what the G stands for. Golfers, Gardening, Geography, Gamers, Garage sale, Guppy, Gluestick… sorry got carried away.
I am going to double post this comment as there are multiple threads now..

I for one despise the new pepsi logo. man they messed up…
You know… i thought the logo looked pretty good when looking at it at work and then I got home and my home monitor does it absolutely no justice. In fact it looks like crud on this monitor. Interesting…
Wonder if the color is off on my junky home monitor.
Yikes!
I wasn’t intending to open another debate amongst the masses…
…but I guess it’s that kind of topic (one that I think many WGA members want to hear input from the candidates on). Hence why I added the thread.
Carry on…
There are no Standard electric family sites left as available on the reservation website. They are all Standard Non-electric that remain available for that weekend.
The availability in the “Family sites” are all Non-electric, non-water sites anyway. The only thing you “really” gain by going with a family site is your by a shower building, correct? And you may have a nice landing pad for your pop-up which I assume isn’t the case for the group sites. And it looks like you might gain your own personal fire pit?
My family also has a pop-up trailer camper. Not sure about the “non-electric” camping though 😆
I would say I would go for whichever is more economical. If I have to “dry camp” with the fancy pop-up it doesn’t matter where 😉
Hey now, no whining about rules that do not permit whining….
