both mentally and physically. I now understand why Farve had to go to a hospital to quit.

I don’t think many people understand why someone would get addicted to pain medications like vicodin and percoset until the day they have to take them routinely and then get to feel what it’s like to stop taking them. Especially when they (the doctor) “cuts you off” before the pain is actually gone.

I have recurring kidney stones and I have had 2 painful surgeries in the last 3 years (one included detaching my ear and then reattaching it, the other I had a surgical instrument left inside me). Trust me, I know what it’s like to be in so much pain that alternating advil and tylenol won’t cut it and to feel the addiction of these drugs. I congratulate you for stopping as I know it’s not easy.

Most kids would rather be hiking/geocaching rather than riding in the car between them

Very good advice to live by when you have kids in the 6 – 10 year old range. I speak from experience. I have 3 of them 🙂

Another good tip (especially if you have one child interested in geocaching and another that may be not so interested) is to choose caches in parks that have playgrounds or something else to do as well in addition to finding the geocache. Especially if you are going out to find a bunch in one day. It helps break up the “routine” of it all if the kids have a chance to do something else fun too. My kids especially like running up and down hills, climbing fences (like those that go around the edges of baseball diamonds), and looking at animals (except snakes.. none of them are fond of snakes).

On last tip from me is to watch the attributes. Poison plants, thorns, ticks, dangerous areas, difficult climbing are good ones to avoid with little ones in toe. Recommended for kids, Takes less than a hour, Watch for livestock (nothing makes a kid happier than seeing livestock..), drinking water nearby (kids are ALWAYS thirsty when geocaching it seems..), and stroller accessible are good ones to watch for.

sniper, no sniping… (for those of you without young-ish children in the house you might not get the reference…)

Congrats JimandLinda! A well-deserved win. I’m sure it’s much more difficult to win in December than other times of the year. Especially with all the snow we had.

Sagasu Dave’s been revisiting all of them around here… we just call him “maintenance man”…

Plenty of new ones around here for me to think about hunting. Too bad it’s so cold. I’m allergic to snow and cold.

I couldn’t tell “which fall” because we tend to decorate the house the same way each fall for Halloween 🙂 Creatures of habit we are…

in reply to: Geochecker not working? #1899670

…same here, especially on those s|s puzzles with so many interpretations and me making so many mistakes…

I noticed Hemi’s note about not getting the field solves correct. This is why I often put geochecker on my “field puzzles” even though the cache puzzle is meant to be solved out in the field… That way if they do dnf or want to gather info, come home, solve, and then return to find the cache another day then they can and get assurance on the solve. Probably not too useful for out-of-town cachers but for those in the area, it probably comes in handy.

    Yeah for geochecker!

Bringing this thread back to life to inform those in NE wisconsin that Google streetview came to town here. Looks like the pictures in Appleton were snapped on or around Halloween as our decorations are up on our front porch.

Panning around, I see that Appleton, Neenah (parts), Menasha, Oshkosh, Depere, Greenbay, and even Hortonville (sorry Greenville.. looks like they didn’t drive around too much there..) are all now available in Google streetview.

If you live in these cities, go ahead, find your house 🙂 You know you want to…

I think it will be about the same as this year.

In 2008, I learned that I am more of a “collector” than a “numbers guy”. I like to collect things and I like to log the accounts along the way.

    The numbers:
    311 Finds, 16 of those were FTF’s
    60 dnf’s
6 Events Attended, 1 was hosted/owned by me
28 Caches Placed (of which 5 were subsequently archived in 2008 )

The Chronological Caching Highlights of 2008:
    – In early January I went a business trip to Plano, TX. Dnfed 3 caches in Texas and found out that caches in Wisconsin are much better maintained and in much better locations than in other parts of the country
    – In March I won the Lonely Cache Game (LCG) for the month with 34 “reports” and 265.5 points scored in the month.
    – I also found a couple of my all-time favorite caches in March:
    – GC12FFY – Old Man Takes Shelter – Hand’s down my favorite caching “experience” to-date.
    – GC14WJJ – Espagueti Occidentales – The toughest puzzle cache I have ever solved.
    – Towards the end of March, my family had a Winter Getaway at the Tundra Lodge Resort in Greenbay and we visited Lambeau Field and found a few caches along the way.
    – April 19th I hosted a CITO Event in Appleton in Jones Park, my first attempt at hosting an event. 29 people helped clean up the park that day. It was really overwhelming to see everyone cleaning up the park and the impact we had.
    – At the end of April I had my Gall Bladder removed. The doctor left a piece of surgical equipment in me that I still carry around with me today. A TB I picked up while finding GC1B4ZH helped keep me company while I was in the hospital.
    – In May, around the time of my Birthday my son (little cheeto) and I went on a fishing and caching trip driving to our usual getaway locale (Adams County). I got to meet labrat_wr on this trip and also hunt one of his caches GC16CJD, where 50+ mph severe storm winds blew us clear out of the park! When we got back near home we stopped and fished in Neenah and little cheeto pulled in a whopper of a bass.
    – At the end of May, I traveled to Chicago on business and cached there and back. I visited Al Capone’s grave at GC26C4 and I also got followed by some creepy pervert who thought I wanted some “action” while hunting a pair of caches in the Bemis woods. I also found GC137FG the RAID series of caches which is a great high-quality cache series and also my inspiration for the “In a Rut” cache series that I placed in June, which was my first experience with working with both the park and rec dept and with a subdivision homeowner’s association to get cache placement approval.
    – In June, my entire family got eaten alive while hunting Sagasu’s night cache GC1BW8D. We managed to find our way in and back and it only took a few days to rebuild the blood cells.
    – In July, Hemi (Jim of Team Hemisphere Dancer) and I met during the 4th of July fireworks show (put on by none other than Team Bear Bear) and planned our attempt at the 5-star terrain GC16W5J – Oasis in Menasha. What would be my first 5-star terrain and my 600th milestone cache find. We embarked into choppy Lake Winnebago waters and managed to tip the canoe just after swinging around the Island. Everything onboad enjoyed a swim including my digital camera and cell phone. Ended up with a new cell phone…
    – In August my family visited relatives in Spring Grove Illinois near GC159XA and spent the weekend swimming in their pool.
    – In October I found my first Letterbox Hybrid GC1HJR7. My entire family also attended JimandLinda’s event in Fondulac which was my milestone #700 cache and before getting to the event we visited Zuma’s Lighthouse Yellowstone Trail cache GCR092 which was really the highlight of the day for us.
    – November was quiet and I almost didn’t even find any caches in December the snowiest Month ever on record for Appleton.

Looking ahead to 2009, my goals:
    – I want to use our camper more. We purchased a pop-up in 08 and didn’t use it all that much.
    – I hope I can attend a WGA event and attend as many geocaching events as I can.
    – I am going to archive some of my caches and hide some new better quality caches and hope to stay on top of cache owner maintenance better than I did in 08.
    – I hope to find more Earthcaches in 2009 as this is an area of caching I would like to explore more of.
    – Number goal is obvious, to find my 1,000th.
    – Host a bigger and better Appleton CITO event and not have to pay as much out of my own pocket to make it happen.
    – Win another month on the LCG.
    – Beat Sagasu Dave whenever possible and on whatever I can. He loves the competition.
    – And most importantly Meet more Geocachers!

Choice 3 would be to download and install a browser other than internet exploder.

At home I use Google Chrome. At work, Firefox.

I have only personally seen this issue in IE.

in reply to: Winter MPG #1899424

It’s much economical for me in the winter. I cache less which means I drive less which means I spend less on fuel…

I know this thread is about MPG but when you think of the economy of it all, isn’t gas typically cheaper in the winter? Therefore, regardless of this discussion, it might be more economical to cache in the winter than in the summer when gas prices peak due to early summer travel demands.

It’s too cold out to go caching…

FYI – I have never seen the bookmark list bug while using Firefox 3 or with Google Chrome.

It seems pretty browser specific. I’ve seen it on both IE 6 and 7.

in reply to: WLCG Bookmark List #1899490

this is a well-known “bug” with the bookmark list functionality of the site. Groundspeak says “they fixed it” in just about every new website code release and then someone always says “it still doesn’t work”. I agree that the LCG book mark lists tend to cause the bug to show. It also seems to only show while using internet explorer and I do not believe it’s related to the speed of your internet access at all because I have seen it on my corporate laptop on a highspeed internet connection as well.

At this point Groundspeak thinks they have it fixed but it still happens occasionally. There is a website forum here:
    http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?s=e0c7b37ea372393cd66b884506911daf&showforum=8

There is a pinned thread on how to report site issues that will fill you in on next steps if you want folks at Groundspeak to hear of your issues with long bookmark lists.

Funny… I bought the force unleashed and only played it for like an hour and got bored. It’s not as good as I was expecting and the 2 player duel mode is boring once both players master the controls.

World of goo is a wiiware game. I received a bunch of points for christmas 🙂 It’s 1500 points which is basically 15 bucks and it’s better and more addictive than most 50 dollar wii games I’ve purchased & rented.

I have to say, the only games that we continue to play over and over are madden football and wii sports (which our disk is sooo scratched it often doesnt work…) and I own a ton of wii games. Of course, we just got the wiiware version of Dr Mario and that seems to be a new favorite in the house.
