I can tell you that the numbers will be shifting rather soon.

However, it appears that alex is prepared to win this month 🙂 (or he is pushing dave to keel over trying)

No longer are these guys finding lonely caches in the “cache-rich” fox valley…. They are venturing far from these parts… I mention this because I would figure that many have thought they didn’t have a chance against cachers in “other parts of the state” because of the quantities of caches in certain areas.

During the 2nd month of each cycle, this no longer applies (the close one’s on the list have been scored – be it revisits, or otherwise) and these 2 must venture further away (and further into the woods) where each lonely find is “earned” by long hikes, kayaking, excessive gas prices, long days on the road, etc.

It’s no longer about living in a “cache-rich” area of the state. It’s now more about perseverence, time, and money. Which I have none of the 3…

I am a mere spectator in this event now.

Yes, it does attempt to guess what city people are logging in from (using their IP address)

And this type of “logic” can be sketchy at-best. I was logged into a Wireless connection at Oracle training in the Chicago-area a couple weeks ago and logged onto http://www.google.com on a web browser and Google auto-forwarded me to their switzerland version thinking I was logged onto the internet from Switzerland… Would have been more fun than sitting in Oracle training in Chicago!

Sounds like a good addition to the site…

We camped all weekend in Pelican Lake. On the drive back, when we passed through Antigo there were dozens of very large trees downed throughout the town.

Perhaps an automated message but it is “signed by” the “welcome committee” with contact info and whatnot?

That way it’s automated, but if they reply it will go to someone who volunteers to field those beginner type questions.

    Just a thought…

    Congrats on the milestone!

Congratulations! Cute “1st cache” pic 🙂

in reply to: What is up with the local reviewer #1887335

Found one in Illinois on a bridge railing over Salt Creek… was thinking to myself, that one like this would never be approved in Wisconsin 🙂

With good consistent application of the rules, we can all enjoy a much safer search for geocaches. Most of the guidelines are for safety.. well there’s the .1 thing. (and dont get me started on the “agendas” in caches topic). I’ve never really had a big problem with our local reviewers. They are good at communicating any issues they have and easy to work with to fix those items.

I am amazed by how many caches get published on just about a daily basis in Wisconsin… I tell you, if I was someone as involved as our reviewers are I’d be divorced.. so you can add “being single” as another preferred attribute 😉

in reply to: 528 foot rule #1889880

I beleive the fox river separates one of my caches from another that is less than .1. As others have stated, there can be exceptions and it all depends on the terrain and what’s involved.

in reply to: Caching in Chicago… #1889665

I originally tried to find anything related on their msg boards and couldn’t but I suspected that those in the area probably knew this was an issue.

My warning was to those who enter an area not knowing its “potential” should keep their eyes open. I do not think this individual would have injured me. However, his actions were not what I would call “acceptable”.

Looking back on the incident, the best move would have been to make contact with the officer to alert him of the activity/issue.

In this day and age, I don’t care what you are “looking for”, it’s just not acceptable to follow people around like that. Straight, gay, black, white, indian, etc. I was more worried that he was interested in grabbing my backpack, money, etc than anything else.

Gas is 4.25 today near Chicago. I snapped a picture so that I can remember how “cheap” gas was when I look back 2 years from now.

By the way, the cache in question is a substantial distance from the Chicago city limits in an extremely affluent area (Oak Brook/ Hinsdale/ Western Springs

Exactly! That’s why I noted that I felt “safe” finding some caches around where I was staying in Westchester. I reviewed the logs in the past for the caches in this woods and didn’t see anything of note but seeing the cops presence in this area assured me that either they knew something is going on or that cop was taking a nap.

My post wasn’t necessarily to “pick on” this particular region (i.e. Chicago). Just to make note of keeping your eyes open for things while you are out and about in unknown (to you) areas. I could have easily not picked up on this guy and ended up stranded and who knows what else… This same story could have easily happened back home where I live as it could here.

I am headed back out again after training today but not to that same stretch of woods.

Of course if you avoid the urban parks with playgrounds, you have the urban woods with the creepy guys following you around…. I digress…

Before I was “in the know” and if I was at the park with my daughters and saw some guy walking around looking for something I would not necessarily assume child molester but that’s just me. Most playgrounds have parents around… If there are parents around it might make it easier for you to hunt that cache if you just introduce yourself first. If there are kids playing and no parents are around and you are a solo male geocacher, you may want to skip that cache. If it’s a micro hidden on a playground you won’t miss much…

I too like to go caching with the family when there are caches like this to find. Not only because it provides “cover” but also because my kids like to go play at the park 🙂 And they find the caches like this rather than the adults.

Just my thoughts on that particular subject.

Oh and by the way, he could not possibly have been a geocacher because I very visibly had my GPS in my hand and did not try to avoid him as I would a “normal muggle”. I hoped he was another cacher but there was no pleasant dialogue to be had…

    in reply to: Muggles #1889562

How cool is that… a cache owner “being the muggle” to fend off potential finds and make it more challenging. genius i tell ya… knowing this is the case, other cachers in that area could make a game out of logging this one. Perhaps showing up in strange costumes would be fun…. Of particular interest might be Surveyor, Detective, Construction, Super hero, chicken, maybe a gorilla.
