Thanks for the heads up on calibrating the electronic compass. I did so and it worked much better tonight. I also noticed that there is a setting on when to switch to the electronic compass when tracking and I think I could lower that setting so that it only uses that when you walk really slow.

It’s not so bad now but before it was calibrated it was getting crazy 🙂 One interesting thing about the electronic compass is it knows when you turn around and stay in the same spot which the magellan I had did not do that.

    Thanks for the help guys…

hmm… a splendid idea for a new cache. lot’s of ways to go with this one…

I was joking by the way in my raving mad rant post…. I probably would not make a cache like that. But I thought it was pretty funny when I read back my post the next day 🙂

tyedyeskyguy – what if you did that same shirt but it was done against white/gray shirt and in a darker color? not so sure about a green shirt… maybe make the printing in green?

i am no artist, otherwise I would submit an idea of my own.

i like the design with the tent incorporated somehow.

    playing fair.

When a cache owner publishes a cache that allows for bonus find logs, all cache hunters have the option. How is that not “fair”? Define fairness for me please…

I have seen some excellent, creative, and rewarding ways cache owners have used the bonus log option especially in the “unknown” cache type. We continue to push boundaries and build in more “gray areas” in that cache type every day.

I for one, like the fact that GC.com allows for multiple logs and takes the stance that they do as far as allowing cache owners to create the kind of cache they want to.

It’s not “cheating”. It’s what the cache owner is intending for their cache and your hunting experience. However, you can always play it how you want to and log how you want to. You can subscribe to whatever moral code you want to. However, you are making a mountain out of a mole hill by judging others as you did in this posting.

Folks talk about cheating, fairness, competition, numbers, padding etc but you know what? My find count will never impact you. Who gives a sh** if I logged a handful of caches twice because the owner said I could. You know who??? Nobody! Not you, Not your grandma, not your grandma’s best friend. Nobody cares!

So stop judging other people when it’s well within the “rules” of the GC.com “game” to own caches that allow multiple logs and allow players to log multiple logs on those caches.

I voted YES. I voted YES long before any of these posts were made on the subject. It’s not really about the multiple “attended” logs for events for me. It’s about defending the option for cache owners to allow multiple logs if they wish to do so.

I think I am going to build a cache that allows as many finds as people want to log. I’ll call it “calling all cheaters”. You can feel free to log 1 find on it so that you know you will go to heaven. Perhaps then your grandma’s friend can congratulate you for never once cheating while you geocached…

    in reply to: EVENTS #1887416

Oh! Did I forgot to mention I have 12 temp caches out for the two events?

So being the owner, will you allow multiple logs on the events?

And please tell me they are not all puzzles… 🙂

in reply to: Why I voted "YES" to logging temps #1887390

I guess I fall in the dark grey side of the force as I have at least one cache that allows multiple “bonus” logs and I have logged multiple “bonus” logs on caches where the owner allows for it. I agree with Zuma that the entire WGA is the cache owner for WGA events and as such should decide if multiple logs on the event page are appropriate or not. If the WGA owned a specific geocache it would be no different than at an event.

One thing that has always interested me is why GC.com counts an event in your “find” count in the first place. It’s pretty easy to “find” most event locations 🙂

I have not yet been to an event that had temporary caches just for the event so I cannot speak one way or the other on the topic. However, if such event had text outlining the rules for posting and those rules said I could log once for each temp find, why would I not? Follows the same logic as owners who allow “bonus” finds as far as I’m concerned. And I do not beleive that practice is “bad form”. It’s only dark gray on the “force scale” 🙂

Ry and Ny – what an excellent response to this thread!

    thanks for the info.

i have watched the geo-camput thread waiting for a registration announcement and it just seemed odd that when the announcement came that the site was already half full. that’s all I was saying.

I did not receive an “april newsletter”.

    –edit–

I guess I did get it. This one’s a case of the wife being the “spam filter”.

How do you have the group campsites “half filled” if you just posted that registration was open 20 minutes ago?

in reply to: Lonely Cache Game – Congratulations to ……? #1886987

Did you think that a lot of the Lonely Caches were Lonely because they were just too hard, or do you think that some are Lonely because they are kind of lame, and instead of being replaced or maintained, should just be archived?

My response is delayed and I see many have spoken up but I thought I would also answer. I have been in bed with a gall bladder attack that sent me to the ER. What fun! (this on the heals of my dad just having his taken out and having complications…)

    So…

As I look at the list of lonely caches I found they pretty much are in a few categories.

    1. Tough puzzles – This has made for a great challenge in finding them.
    2. Multi’s – That had waypoints and/or finals buried under snow or missing.
    3. Caches that were just in out of the way spots that are tough to get to or that cachers don’t live near. This is the category that costs the most gas money to go look for. Especially, when you make multiple attempts.
    4. Non-winter friendly caches

Most of them were older caches that had been around for awhile so all the locals had probably found them already and not many were die-hard players that would revisit simply for game points. That made it perfect for me as I could score “found it” points because these were simply not caches I concentrated on in the past. Either the puzzles were tough or they had very non-glamorous listings. Let’s face it, older caches do not seem as exciting as all those new one’s. When you live in an area like Appleton that has so many to find you get to prioritize those hunts. The LCG allowed me to go through the stack and reprioritize. And it paid off in spades with lots of great caches and memorable finds.

For the most part, I think all the “lame” lonely caches around here were probably adopted or archived before I concentrated on the list in March. The one’s that were adopted have been kept in place and most certainly have been or will be improved upon so that is a good thing.

in reply to: Lonely Cache Game – Congratulations to ……? #1886978

    Thanks for the congrats.

I have found roughly 85 – 90% of the lonely caches in a 40 mile radius around my house in Appleton. The remaining one’s I have not found are all puzzles I could not solve in time and/or are missing or still snow covered yet.

    Some stats:
    – 1/3 (10 out of 29) of the one’s I attempted/found were puzzle caches.
    – I attempted one multi 4 times before finding it. Each time walking my puppy. It’s a great excuse for caching.
    – I looked for caches in 4 cemeteries. One in the dark. I am not fond of cemeteries.
    – I used a ladder to climb a tree and was “spotted” by K0rpl and Marc and subsequently found my 500th cache. I am afraid of heights.
    – I revisited a tank 4 times that I had already visited 3 times and it was there all along and finally found it.
    – I made the Jamaica Mistaica. And while making the Mistaica, I fell through the ice into Black Otter Lake. Thanks Alex for laughing!
    – I “walked a mile” for some cheese.
    – I Baird my Soul.
    – I uttered many 4 letter words. Most of them while filling my gas tank for a second time in the same week.
    – I earned a few girl scout badges.
    – I got a Library card – never had one! Then I checked out a book on the Appleton Performing Arts Center and read the entire thing front to back.
    – I sorted through song lyrics and created a SQL database table to store the lyrics and searched through them to find just the right one.
    – I found the tab to a lock ‘N’ lock container along a rock covered overgrown strip of land while inhaling Kaukauna air for over an hour. And lived! Never was I so happy to find a 1 inch piece of camo tape covered plastic in my whole life.
    – I stared down some diners at the Chevy Garage while they were eating their lunch. Probably a scarey sight for them! Still not sure about those bowties.
    – I learned all about Marc’s dutch relatives. They all scare me.
    – I created a spreadsheet of Western movies and the actors they share and then saw one of those western movie’s in the video store and almost rented it.
    – I just couldn’t figure out how that Apple got into my eye or make sense of those Penultimate numbers…

All of this (and more!) in 16 days. I started on March 14th.

As of March 16th I had 475 caches found. I had only found 25 in 2008. In the last 16 days I have tacked on 45 more to that as I chased these lonely caches.

    It was a fun run!

You will not be seeing my name near the top for April.

in reply to: Most Memorable Cache? #1886638

Since the question is “Most Memorable” that helped me narrow down my list.

Ever notice that memorable caches are almost always memorable not because of the cache? I have logged extrordinary events on very ordinary caches. It’s really about the hunt and the people.

For this question, I decided on one that was built to be memorable. This one will probably always stand out in my memory no matter how many more Geocaches I find.

GC12FFY – The Old Man | Takes Shelter

Most cachers who have ventured to find this one will probably always remember it. Had I done this one alone, it would probably not be my most memorable.

Finding this one was like those commercials on TV right now where the parent walks in front of the reflective window holding their child’s hand and the parent becomes that little boy/girl again just for a little while. Finding this geocache was traveling back to my teenage years and “hanging out” with my son. It was challenging your best friend or daring them to do something you both know you should probably not be doing. “My mom will find out!”

There’s a reason this one won “Cache of the Month” back in January. For me that reason is highlighted above. Had I gone alone, it might still have been memorable but it just wouldn’t be the same.
