If there are not mosquitos flying around and I find a larger log book, I always look back at past logs and enjoy reading what others had to say about their visits. I also make a point to log something more than just my name in the larger log books like where I’m from and a word about the weather or what I traded.
Obviously in the micros it’s name only.
I’ve made a point to sign the log in every cache I’ve ever found — unless the log was a ball of wet mush.
Just saw 4.07 in Menasha this afternoon. That’s an 8 cent jump from Friday.
Holy cow!
Camping won’t be cheap this summer either.

Should I cover our tent with camo duct tape?
That should make it waterproof! 😆 😆 😆
And hard to see!

I too bought my Oregon 550 on Amazon. Visiting amazon again depresses me as the price has come down (to your advantage)
I love the unit and have no complaints about it.
The camera on the 550 takes good pictures and is handy when you forget your camera or don’t want to carry both. It also tags the picture with where it was taken. Pretty handy feature for scoping out cache hide spots.
Being able to use the field notes on geocaching.com along with marking the caches found on the unit was the best surprise feature for me. I didn’t know it was that slick.
I’m actually a huge fan of the compass though I know some people aren’t. I love that I can turn the unit and it works rather than have to move around.
It’s a touch screen so be prepared for scratches. There are screen protectors out there but I decided I liked touching the actual screen. Living on the edge I guess.
I’ve dropped mine on many occasions and it really takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I haven’t had the guts to dip it in water like the youtube video shows. If you havent seen the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFdxBMvyH2Q
The camera drains the batteries fast so I’ve always used the lithium one-time use batteries as they last the longest. Just general GPS use does not seem to be any harder on batteries as my prior garmin GPS.
If it helps, I don’t regret the purchase and I’ve been using it for a year.
Reminder – Don’t forget to order your campout gear. Shirts, geocoins, pathtags, and Groundspeak items are all available and with no shipping costs. We’ll have them waiting for you at the campout.
May 1st is the deadline for ordering all items.
May 19th is the deadline for paying for the group site camping fees.

can I just say that I’m thankful that everyone on this board is a whole lot friendlier…. yikes – almost hateful atmosphere there.
thanks for sharing the link cheeto.I hear you there!
It’s always the same crowd of posters and they don’t make it a very friendly place for new posters. I’m glad were much more civil over here 😉
Something to also stir up this discussion is the fact that Groundspeak has apparently already made it possible to post a no-text found it log from one of the mobile apps and they plan to do so with the main website as well. Now that is disappointing.
I for one love to write about my adventures and I often read my old logs to remember. I also enjoy reading other cacher’s logs on my favorite caches and logs on the new caches that come out. The online logs are one of my favorite parts of geocaching. But then again, I rarely find so many that I can’t remember something about each find. And even if the cache is just another park n grab (which I do not really target anymore) I still tend to log something, at a minimum thanking the placer with more than just an acronym.
Speaking of cache owners who think they can delete logs because of the quality of the logs, here is a current discussion thread on the groundspeak forums: http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=272739
(Note: I do not endorse cut-n-paste or no-content logging)
04/23/2011 at 1:23 am in reply to: Reasearch question on favorite cache, quality and awareness #1946799I like the kind that I don’t need to be ‘stealthy’ at all and bring me somewhere the owner would like me to go or see – like a not-so-well known park, trail, or scenic view.
I do like the unique hide style and the a-ha moments.
Container type does not really matter to me.
I’ve long since stopped geocaching just for the sake of geocaching. I now geocache when I attend and help out at events and when the family is traveling or camping. Because of that, gas prices will not impact my hobby at all.
So I’m thinking he probably won’t become a geocacher then…
Congrats!!

I thought i remember seeing someone say that some new permanant caches were going to be plaed before the campout. Is this true? I was asking because I ran a Pocket Query for the area and already saw a nice handfull of caches inside Hartmann Creek park and and the area itself has a great number of them. I just want my PQ to be as current and accurate as it can be, so if there are going to be new caches placed and published so i can plan on running a query before we leave and load it in. Thanks. Only 31 more days!
Yep, plan on some new ones being added for the campout 😀
I can assist. I have a supply of them for sale and will be bringing them to the Appleton CITO event this upcoming Saturday. If you can stop there that would be ideal but if not I think we can work something out where I can get you one.
