On a positive note, our recent logs harvester appears to be working. Site updates usually break it..

Actually, it doesn’t show the cache name (or code) of the closest or farthest caches when you look at other peoples profiles, only the distance.
Yep, this was covered a couple times by Opinionate on the groundspeak forums site update thread and they are working on a message addition to the page to tell you this as a user.
Congrats Dave on both achievements 😉
Seems Santa couldn’t decide about me…
Congrats!!
Congrats!!
Congrats 🙂
I don’t see a release notes post in the forums. There may be one hidden somewhere or they may not have made any actual website changes. The wording on the announcement made it sound like it was mostly a hardware/performance upgrade.
I describe in writing on my cache descriptions what you will be in for when hunting them in winter (a “winter friendliness rating”) and I do use the available in winter/not available in winter attribute when a foot of snow will either have no impact or a big impact on making the find.
Some of my ‘In a Rut’ series caches are disabled during snow cover because that was part of the stipulations for getting land manager approval. They also have wording in the description indicating not to hunt them when there is > 4 inches of snow cover. Not all caches should be hunted in the winter.
As far as winter caching goes, when I go, I look for caches that have been found since snow started piling up or have been found in prior winters. Rather than try to rely on a very arbitrary attribute.
Have fun out there in the snow!

I hope I can give some advice without ruffling anyone’s feathers.
There is no shame in archiving a cache. It is not a sign of failure to archive a cache. Very few caches need to last forever.
I will also add that it’s a very responsible thing to do as a cache owner if maintaining is no longer an option.
Don’t forget to remove the “geo-litter” or post a cache rescue mission as others are waiting and willing to do so (in most cases).
In a highly populated area archiving a cache often means another can/will be placed there by another cacher who wants to place a cache — which then everyone can find.
Some caches and series should be adopted and maintained if someone is willing. Some caches, probably not. That’s how I evaluated my own collection of placements.

“WE” meaning the WGA, or anyone wanting to reserve a group site? Just curious, as 1 of the group sites appears to already be reserved according to the ReserveAmerica map for those dates.(not that it matters, or am trying to push you to reserve, either. There is more than enough space up there. Just a clarification standpoint.)
And yes, by perusing the old campout info I got the impression that it’s more of a “tent city” camping event in the group camp area. I reserved my own site already because I’ll be bringing a camper.
I may have misspoke based on a misunderstanding. This may have been the rule for reserving the pavilion (not the group campsite).
But you got the point of my post anyway…

It was my understanding that design was for a specific project, and that next year’s T-shirt and/or coin, would be open for other designs. And that the logo on the website at the top is our logo for everything “permanent”–as permanent as anything is these days.
Your understanding of what I was trying to say is correct.
Not sure what’s so “perplexing” about it.
The board chose to use a “special edition” version of our logo on a t-shirt that had elements of the 2010 geocoin design in it to tie in with the 2010 Geocoin. Both “projects” happening at the same time and chaired by the same person (me). No conspiracy. No underlining agenda to try to change the logo to that one.
Google presents a special edition Google logo on their main page for special events. We presented a Geocoin themed logo on our 2010 t-shirt back. (typically we don’t print a front and back) Yes, folks who are wearing those t-shirts are “representing” the WGA but there are also WGA shirts out there with all sorts of other things like “proposed logo designs that never won the vote”, design contest winners for events, etc.
Not trying to sway the outcome of the poll, just trying to respond to what some think is “perplexing”.
Not every member agrees with the decision to print that “special” logo. I understand that viewpoint so please don’t think I’m judging anyone who thinks “you shouldn’t mess with the logo”.
I was glad to see they supported -‘s so that I could keep my name the same. Not that I wanted the -‘s but you know how it is…
They also don’t support short usernames (I think 5 characters was mentioned as the minimum…) as well which was brought up on the related groundspeak forum thread.

It’s easy, you just put the “Internet” ball on the spindle.
you are just too funny…

What does the “full color” image look like? Is that the image on the background of the site?
I believe that is what s|s is referring to. A single color variant (well single color printed, 2nd color being the shirt color) was produced for the back of the t-shirts that were for sale at the cache ba$h and at the picnic. The background is a full color variant that (to my knowledge) had not been published publicly before.
It’s essentially the current logo with the 4-color geocoin design as the state rather than a brown state.
The 2 use-cases of the logo were not any attempt at changing the group’s logo. They were used to tie-in with the 2010 WGA Geocoin “theme”.
Interesting poll though and I am sure there are a few people interested in the results of the vote. (maybe not so much the results of re-opening a can of worms…)
