Large Update.
Some interesting highlights… Sharing a subset of the Release Notes for informational/discussion purposes. For more info please refer to the Groundpeak Website forum.
Trackables Collection – Has the list of Trackables you are “holding” grown out of control? For those of you with a collection of geocoins or mileage-tracker bugs we have added a new virtual collection to your profile. More information can be found in the Trackables Collection knowledge book.
Language Translations – This one is exciting for us. For the first time we are able to offer site translation in 5 major languages; including German, French, Portuguese, Czech and Swedish. This is a work in progress, so not all text and navigation has been translated at this time, although many of the key areas of the site have been. We will continue this localization effort until all areas of the site have been translated in these languages, as well as add entirely new language options down the road. You can select a language preference in your profile and in the footer on every page of the site. Many thanks to the geocachers who contributed their time and knowledge to this effort!

Print version of caches list (Ex. posted by user list) now displays red strikeoutGiven that in most circumstances (multi’s and mystery caches being the exceptions) a geocache is in a known location whereas a letterbox is found via “instructions”. I believe it should be the other way around. Letterboxes should be restricted from being placed near known traditional geocaches. 😉
That is pretty funny about the letterbox and cache being in the same spot with similar writeups. Both of those were placed after we camped last year in Fish Creek… was wondering why I hadn’t known about them.
Good spots seem to attract hidden items…

A lot of people sign the paper log with a different name than their GC user name.
Many people don’t sign the paper log at all…
(I’m not one, just pointing out a known fact)
There’s a thread (or 3) on the geocaching.com website forum and a response from Opinionate regarding the PQ download error. Unrelated to today’s downtime and apparently fixed…
Yes, it was caused by something completely unrelated to the PQ downloads so it was a bit difficult to track down. My sincere apologies for the downtime guys.
The digital camera on the 550 is handy for a couple of reasons… #1 it takes better pictures than my actual digital camera. #2 it tags the picture with the coordinates and you can actually see the pictures as points on a map which was really interesting on our hike at High Cliff this past weekend. Was neat to see where the pictures were taken in comparison to other known waypoints. The coordinate data stays with the picture file when copied to your PC. You’ll forever know exactly where you took that picture 😉
For me the camera was the main reason I chose the 550.
Congrats!!
Copy it to the GPX folder on the unit by exploring to it like any other drive. That’s the simplest way.

Yep, they (groundspeak lackeys) were hinting again in the website forum of an upcoming new release (updates) to the geocaching.com website.
Congrats on the milestone Pete!!
Congrats!!!
A brave soul to walk across the Petenwell barefoot…
As for multi numbered milestones the only one I’ve made a big deal about was my 666th find.
I have roughly 40 ftf’s and 1140 finds total and 91 (non-adopted out) caches hidden.
When I first started I was way more into FTF’s. Now I don’t even get notified of new traditional anymore. I still have a notification for new puzzles near me just to see what types of puzzles are being published. I’ve been watching the map fill up around me again with new caches but have never felt the urge to go find them in the middle of the night like I did when I started. I guess there’s always more important things to do nowadays..
Some interesting FTF’s of mine:
I got one FTF on a puzzle cache (GC13MZC) published June 15th 2007 and I was FTF September 5th.
Another memorable one was a co-ftf on a puzzle cache race (GC15JH6) Had to be the first to find 20 puzzle caches to log this one. Ended up finishing at the exact same time as Sagasu for the co-ftf. It took me 9 days and 3 of my puzzle finds were disqualified requiring me to inf 23 puzzle caches and 295 miles traveled to get the ftf.
On GC1B4ZH my whole family spent a combined 13 hours to get the puzzle solve and then I had to bring Lil Cheeto along to help make the find at one of the most interesting ground zero’s we’ve encountered to date.
And I can’t forget my 1,000th find which was a puzzle FTF celebrated with Lil Cheeto at my tribute cache GC1XPME where zoesbrother and I first attempted to find it in all the wrong places about a half mile away from where it really was.
I’ve chased a lot of ftf’s in the past (both puzzle and traditional) and now I just enjoy reading all the newer cacher’s ftf logs.
My mother in law gave me a GPS and a local newspaper article on geocaching for my birthday in 2007. A couple days later I went on a business trip to Atlanta and took my GPS with me. When I got to the hotel I jumped on the internet and looked up the info for the nearest caches. There were a couple on the trail in a park right behind where I was training and a few by my hotel. I learned on my own and persistence paid off. Those first caches in Georgia got me hooked on geocaching. I even found a caching with kids geocoin there and brought it back with me not knowing what exactly it was and learned later and placed it in another cache while caching with my kids.
My first hide was a puzzle cache hidden about a month after I started. 😉
You may want to check out the “additional resources” I list at the bottom of my Oregon review at my “blog”:
Most of the rest of what I comment on in the review you probably already know if you spent as much time as me researching your purchase.

Mythbusters just did another Duct Tape episode. It can stop a car, be used to build a cannon and also be used to build a bridge now too. 😯
I found the bridge one to be really cool… it’s amazing how little of the stuff it took to suspend their weight.
