  • I can’t speak for any doings by the official WGA board, but I can speak to the positive things I am seeing that have happened at High Cliff State park since the campout earlier in the year.

The state park worked with us to place many new caches in the park where they were not welcomed in the past.

One of the caches I placed there has been found 100 plus times since May. That’s many more times than most other caches I have placed.

I cant say that geocaching has brought more people to this park but I can say based on reading logs, that having caches there is adding geocaching to the agenda of park visitors and campers. Even introducing new cachers to the activity.

In theory that’s 100+ state park admission fees 🙂

I would have never expected those caches to be found that many times. It’s a pleasant surprise.

I apologize for offending anyone. Let me go on the record of saying that I don’t give a crap about what anyone does, does not do, finds, does not find, revisits, does not revisit, rescues, does not rescue, replaces, does not replace, DNFs, or does not DNF in this game. I don’t care if someone files a report 100 times or 1,000. I don’t care if someone “breaks” every “rule” in this game. I don’t care 1,000 people play this game. I don’t care if I’m the only one playing this game. I don’t care if I “win.” I don’t care if I “lose.” I simply, truthfully, frankly, honestly, genuinely, don’t care.

I have other things to care about, but this is not one of them.

This is hilarious. I actually went back and read it semi-aloud here in my cube. The mental picture is probably worth a $1M bucks.

I also have other priorities and hopefully my comments are taken as tongue in cheek as well. I also have morals that wouldn’t let me confirm these just to get some easy points. The engineer in me brings about some curiousity and a desire for “exactness” and this coupled with being a programmer? Well – You get the picture….. 😉 😉 😉 (winkies just to be sure it’s not taken the wrong way)

    When I read his post I was thinking: “I don’t care in a boat”… “I don’t care with a goat”… “I don’t care with a fox” .. “I don’t care wearing socks”.. “I don’t care here”… “I don’t care there”… “I don’t care anywhere”.

About the only time I look at what others are doing in relation to the LCG is when someone scores a ton of points and I am bored and want to read some good cache logs. Typically LCG logs are fun to read when you need some entertainment. Especially gotta run’s logs. 😉

Maybe a clarification about what the “official list” is also just in case the lists on the “main page” don’t match the dropdown list on the “submit report” page.

I don’t see this as a problem. The “official” list is the bookmark list itself and I know it takes a lot of (volunteer) time and (manual) effort to put it together and there’s bound to be an occasional hiccup betweeen the bookmark list and the dropdown scorecard. If the list doesn’t include a cache for some reason the site admin will quickly add it if you email him (Jeremy). If there’s something on the dropdown that isn’t on the bookmark list you can drop an email to deejay.

I never noticed this before but recently one of my caches was found and logged for points and it wasn’t “lonely” i.e. on the bookmark list. It wasn’t a cache rescue either.

    Honestly, not a big deal… 😀

It’s probably a bit a work to clean up that drop-down each period. And likely very easy to miss something.

in reply to: Permission in Fitchburg parks #1915431

Are the -previously placed- cache owners being addressed in this announcement WGA members? You may also want to send the specific owners(s) an email as well?

I’m sure this happens everywhere. Especially when caches are placed in public park properties in smaller cities and towns where there are no posted policies or forms that citizens know about.

I’ve been in the same situation while trying to get permission on caches and told by a park director that they were aware of many other geocaches placed without permission. And this was in a locality that had an actual posted policy on geocaching on their parks dept website!

I wouldn’t feel like you are stepping on anyone’s toes. You are merely doing what “they” should have done. 🙂

My personal opinion is that the icon should only be used when the cache is hidden in a ski lodge, with a good fire going in the fireplace and a pot of hot cider nearby. 😀

    Sounds good to me! 😀

Probably just about every cache that’s indoors and that building is accessible in the winter is probably both “available in winter” and “winter friendly” 😀

    Start hiding more indoor caches!

in reply to: Winter-Friendly Cache Icon #1915315

I placed a cache making light of this same question once before 😉

I also added a “winter friendliness rating” to the cache page for most of my caches and it describes in actual words what you are in for if you hunt that particular cache in the winter. Sometimes it can also be used as a hint while hunting at any time.

Like any attribute it’s subjective in it’s use and will always suffer “misuse” which all depends on your opinion of it’s use.

It will be good to see a consensus here on what everyone thinks the attribute *should* mean.

I don’t have very many caches that I have placed this attribute on. I don’t consider it to be “winter friendly”. In the attributes limited definition it’s available in winter or not. I probably have more caches with the “not available in winter” attribute which I use on those caches that I place on the ground or under things on the ground. I figure if I use that icon I’m helping out the number hungry winter cachers who use that attribute to filter their PQ’s in the winter.

The cool thing is that it can be found by multiple people, so this isn’t a race like FTF (like any of us ever try for these).

This and the prior posting point out the common misconception that you have to be the first (or only) finder of the lonely caches to earn the points.

The only benefit to being the first points-wise is if it hasn’t been found in over a year or 2 years, etc. However, everyone who finds a lonely cache during a certain 2 month period that the cache is on the bookmark list can submit the cache for the points.

There is the rewarding feeling of being the first to find that lonely cache in awhile but from a points/game perspective it’s sorta irrelevant being first.

For me it’s the challenge of doing that most others don’t want to do for whatever reason.

Thanks Code Junkie for saying what I wanted to say using all the right words!

There’s just something different and seemingly more satisfying about chasing lonely caches than running pocket queries of the easiest caches in an area and trying to find 60+ caches.

Geocaching: a game for everyone’s tastes. I love finding challenging lonely caches and especially lonely puzzle caches. Those are the best kind.

I haven’t been “playing” recently because I haven’t been geocaching recently. Simple answer for me 🙂

Looks to be a good month for anyone to try for the win!
