Many hiders, on the other hand, end a cache’s life unceremoniously, without returning the favor and sharing any of their own experiences in maintaining the cache or explaining why it’s time to let it go.

I often do this on my caches that I archive. Perhaps not a 500 word essay but I do often post information about why it was archived or a tidbit about the history of the cache or the reason it was created in the first place. I also sometimes give warning on upcoming archival, especially if it’s a puzzle.

Interesting fact you may not have known. Did you know that if you delete a log it’s still written in the groundspeak datbase somewhere? This was confirmed on the groundspeak forums not too long ago. Also, archived logs are visible by certain users of the website. So if you write something you are not so proud of in a log and then think that deleting the log is getting rid of the record, you may want to change the log first and then delete it.. just an FYI. Sort of off topic but good info to know.

I’ve started a “KFC in the Valley” bookmark.

I actually thought about creating a bookmark list related to this recently when I did a very family friendly new multi-cache at plamann… great minds thinks alike!

Make sure you add the eternal question at plamann to your list. It’s a great KFC even if it’s not labeled as such.

You might want to name your bookmark list “Family Friendly caches of the valley” rather than KFC so people don’t have to guess what the list is about when they see it on a cache page… just a suggestion as not everyone knows what KFC means. They might think it’s a list of caches behind chicken shops… 😉

I think this is a great idea by the way!!

Purple pins = Theme trading caches for Tinky Winky or Barney figurines

Better stock up for all those s|s caches…

Quick other than the drive time between them… 😉

I tried using the PQ and Google maps, but only a few pins show up

    You whiners…

All of them show up for me… must be a browser (or mac) thing.

What do the various color pins mean anyway? I think there was a color I could not figure out the last time I looked. Perhaps red was the one I couldn’t figure out why a specific cache had a red pin.

My work Internet access blocks the map site so I can’t confirm or deny it was the red pin I was wondering about or whether there is a key on the map even for the colored pins. That tells you how often I look at it

preferable to an incoherent string of unpunctuated babble.

I couldn’t agree more with you gotta run. I would much rather see a log that says tftc or even the word “easy” or “easy find” rather than anything else these days.

In fact, there was just a big hubub on the letterboxing boards about the merits of specifically NOT asking permission.

Or you buy a nuvi for much less money and read the caches pages on there or have someone else in the care read the page to everyone else as you drive to the next cache or are finding the parking spot.

Now that I’ve gotten the Nuvi and load caches to both that and my handheld, I read cache page information much more than I did before getting the Nuvi. This kind of reiterates points made already regarding other devices and gps models.

So it seems that the technology that made us “lazy” (PQ’s) has come full circle with better devices with more storage space and now allows us to actually read the information while experiencing the location.

Every now and again I will try a cache “blind” though just for kicks..

    I wasn’t necessarily questioning the importance of a map…

Maybe this was asked before in the past, but is the only reason you create this map for those without a premium membership?

Once the bookmark list is published, I turn it into a pocket query and then preview on the geocaching.com map. Works just the same…

Another question sort of related to the map and what it shows, are premium member only caches filtered from the LCG list initially upon creation of the list? Or are all caches listed purely on last find? I.e. do you check “are available to all users” on the PQ’s you run to generate the list?

in reply to: Testing puzzles #1910773

I find that Dave is the best puzzle tester there is…

I do often try alternative solve methods and researching my puzzles several different ways before publishing. Especially if I want the solve to be done a certain way. I have learned by experience both in solving and creating that a research question can also have 2 “correct” answers. It’s best to publish your sources if possible or mention something that will get rid of this ambiguity.

When my son and I built his weird al puzzle we tried it out on several different people to make sure it was okay. If you’ve experienced the pleasures of working on this one you can rest assured that we tortured several non cachers with that one.. lol

Most often the mistakes that are found are accidentally mixing up sets of coords, last minute changes can wreck havoc, and typos and transposing numbers. Those are my often caught bugs and issues. That an alternative resource/solves.

    true, true

And so what if it requires a premium membership. Make it a premium member only cache. That satisfies that concern.

Technically you can load the PQ file to Excel so you don’t need GSAK. A formula in Excel gives you the Day/Month of the find and just sort by that and see which one’s are missing.

Seems pretty doable to me… In terms of confirming completion that is. As it relates to actually completing it, count me out.
