and a MINIMUM of, say 20 finds
Considering many caches that have been nominated in the last say 6 months didn’t have this many and it takes at least 20 more more VOTES to win for a month this is a pretty safe minimum criteria for a nomination.
I personally don’t think we should deny a member nominating a new cache or one with very few finds. Many that have ended up on the list are most likely COTM “worthy” caches. Take for instance Roter Eulenflug (typing off memory so I apologize if I killed this name) by seldom | seen (nominated last month I believe). Worthy of a COTM. Probably (I dnfed it so I cannot fully form an opinion as of yet). Ever going to win a popularity contest vote? Nope. The numbers aren’t there unless one “solicits”.
However, the act of nominating a COTM (like the example above) currently gets the cache bookmarked and as such has value. If there is to be a “screening” of nominations we should not deny the nomination being recognized nor should we deny the bookmark addition of a nominated cache.
Overall I do agree with adding some sort of screening criteria before a vote occurs.
Another idea I have not seen mentioned is a nomination period where nomination is open and then it is closed and THEN voting can begin. It makes no sense to nominate a new cache after 3 weeks of the month. Perhaps allow 2 weeks for nomination and 2 weeks for voting each month. If a new COTM worthy cache comes out in the latter half of a month it’s simply nominated for the following month. I believe this would add value to the current process.
Not sure on how difficult this would be to develop or modify but it could be as “simple” as not allowing to add a new nomination when voting if after a certain numbered day of the month (say 15th?)
What’s wrong with a lamp-post cache winning COTM? Sometimes those are fun too… 😉
Congrats!!!
I watch caches but my wife usually deletes the emails…
But more on topic, I usually watch caches that I have found before and are my favorites for some reason or other. Tough terrains, clever containers, and the like. Mostly because I enjoy reading logs and usually if I found a cache enjoyable others will probably as well.
I also watch caches that I was involved in created (co-owner type situations) but am not the actual owner of the cache.
I also watch some puzzle caches I haven’t solved yet just in case some tidbit of info comes through on a recent found log.
Having said that, I keep my watch list around 10 – 15 or so at all times and remove the one’s I am no longer interested in following.
Like I said, most of the emails either get deleted or forwarded to my work account. Flip a coin as to which one happens on any given day.
Congrats!! I’ve clicked on a few of your recent logs and saw some of the pics on facebook. What a great vacation and trip!! Add me to the list of jealous on-lookers.
Actually you can in the description 😉
Speaking of building new puzzles….
As some of you may know, I visit the area from time to time. Never gotten to “the other side” of the Petenwell to do this one. To be honest, been a bit scared to make an attempt by myself 😳
Wouldn’t mind going on a group hunt of this one if it takes shape and I’m free.
Not to sound like a walmart commercial but they also have small zip-lock baggies in their craft dept that can be used to store a micro log sheet folded or rolled.
Ditto on the Fleet farm ammo cans. Best to catch them on-sale though as they periodically put them on sale for almost half-off or more.
The dealer that I’ve bought many magnetic nano containers from on the cheap seems to have gone under 🙁 I would never pay 5 dollars a piece or more for these…
I’ve generally seen the film containers inside another container. I think that works better.
I have to agree with this 100% I actually prefer (as a finder) a film canister with a micro log roll inside a regular/small sized container over the log “books”. Many of these log “books” are in baggies that don’t zip lock, are falling apart anyway (pages falling out), are wet clumps of mold, etc. Make sure you label the 35mm container as the log so that it is not taken from the cache and so those not familiar can find it.
This is a much better use for them then as a container. Your odds vary on whether a 35mm stays dry. Some I’ve seen dry long after they are placed and others are instantly wet and never get better.
There’s always another wally world…. lol
It’s funny that you say that because I almost always glance at those and the keyholders in the auto dept as to whether they are in stock or out of stock. There’s usually no middle ground when it comes to these 2 items… Strange.
and I have been married for 24 years.
Congratulations!
H20-proof matchstick containers can always be found at Wally World.
Congrats!!!
that are married
is the key here….
So, for all of you out there going for big numbers, tell me….what’s driving you? Not just the competition, which we understand. Why give up all the spare time to “get numbers?”
Awhile ago (2/20/09) I changed my profile page and stopped tracking “my stats”. That was the day I decided to end my addiction to numbers. It felt really good to just stop tracking it all and worrying about the numbers. I also pulled the plug on my addiction to ftf’s early this year as well.
So I guess you can say I decided quality over quantity though that’s not really “it” either. It was really more of an end to an addiction. Now I leave new caches all around home to be found another day or maybe next year or never. It feels good to stop. Really!
I enjoy geocaching when I can and I certainly don’t “post big numbers” anymore.
I have now found a substitution drug for my addiction to numbers. I now play in the land of make believe Pirates, Vampires, and Mafias.
Congrats Pete!!
Watch out.. the cheeto clan’s headed back to WR this weekend 😉
